Dogtown for Saugus, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training

Saugus sits on Route 1 with plenty of pet businesses in town, and a Saugus dog owner does not need to cross two towns for a routine play day. This page is for the owner whose dog needs something more specific. It covers the drive, the town's 24-hour leash law and license calendar, and the two places in town to practice once your dog comes home.

Why Saugus drives

Saugus has daycare on its doorstep; force-free board and train is what earns the run up Route 128

We will not pretend Eastern Ave is the obvious choice for a Saugus play day. There are daycares and groomers in Saugus itself, and for a dog who goes twice a week the shorter drive wins. Where Dogtown differs is the training. Every program is fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement, mindfulness and clear communication, and the board-and-train stays put that method to work every day for one or two weeks while the dog lives in our building and joins daycare where it fits.

For a Saugus family with an adolescent who drags on the leash, that means the new habits are taught with rewards and repetition until they hold up around distractions, not drilled in with pressure. The Foundation week suits puppies, young dogs and basic manners. The Advanced fortnight suits adolescents who know the cues at home but lose them outside. Ask us for the current price; we quote board and train after a short assessment, and single training sessions start from $94.

  • Foundation, 1 week: obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, crate and household manners
  • Advanced, 2 weeks: distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence and 2 go-home coaching lessons
  • Daily updates during the stay, and a go-home lesson at the handover
  • Programs quoted after an assessment; sessions from $94

How a stay runs

A board-and-train stay from Saugus is two drives, daily updates and a lesson at the handover

The drive is the reason board and train suits Saugus better than weekly sessions here. Weekly lessons would mean a round trip of about 80 minutes every time, by our estimate. A Foundation week or an Advanced fortnight means you make the trip at the start, read the daily updates while your dog works, and make it again to collect your dog and take the go-home lesson. Advanced adds two scheduled go-home coaching lessons, so pencil in those trips when you book.

If two weeks away is too long for your dog, Canine Campus is the hybrid version: two, four or six weeks of training and adventure days, with your dog sleeping at home. From Saugus that means more days on Route 128, so ask about pick-up for your address before you choose it. Either way, the plan starts with a short assessment, and we will tell you plainly which program fits the dog in front of us.

Getting here

Route 1 or Walnut Street to Route 128, then north to where 128 ends: about 40 minutes

Most of Saugus reaches Route 128 one of two ways: Route 1 north to its interchange with 128 at the Lynnfield-Peabody line, or Walnut Street, which crosses into Lynnfield and has its own 128 exit. Once on the highway, stay with Route 128 where I-95 splits off toward New Hampshire in Peabody, and follow it through Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea to its end in Gloucester. Eastern Avenue is a couple of minutes on. Outside rush hour the trip is about 40 minutes, by our estimate.

Saugus is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 fare applies only in the four Cape Ann towns it serves. Drop-off and pick-up windows on weekdays are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and on Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. Sunday is open only to overnight guests, from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.

Saugus dog rules

Saugus runs a 24-hour leash law, a three-dog limit and a June 30 license deadline

The Town of Saugus licenses dogs through the Town Clerk's office at 298 Central Street, Suite 7, in person, by mail or through the town's online permit portal. The 2026 application lists $12 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for an intact dog, and a $20 late fee applies to any license taken out after June 30, 2026. The license runs from April 1 to March 31. The clerk takes cash or check only, and a mailed application needs a copy of the rabies certificate and a stamped return envelope.

The same application states that Saugus has adopted bylaws calling for a 24-hour leash law and a limit of three dogs per household. In practice a Saugus dog is on a leash whenever it leaves home. That is useful context for training: a dog that walks well on a loose leash is a dog that enjoys Saugus, and leash skills sit at the center of both board-and-train programs. Bring the current license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records whenever your dog starts daycare, Academy or an overnight stay.

  • License: $12 spayed or neutered, $15 intact (2026 application)
  • Late fee: $20 after June 30, 2026; license year April 1 to March 31
  • Town Clerk, 298 Central Street, Suite 7: cash or check only
  • 24-hour leash law; three dogs per household

Practice at home

Breakheart and the Iron Works are where a Saugus dog practices what it learned

Breakheart Reservation covers 652 acres across Saugus and Wakefield and is managed by the state's Department of Conservation and Recreation. DCR rules require a leash of ten feet or less on its land unless an area is posted otherwise, and keep pets off designated swimming areas from May 1 through September 15. Breakheart's beach is at the north end of Pearce Lake, so keep summer walks to the trails. The ten-foot limit leaves room for a long-line recall drill on a quiet stretch.

Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, run by the National Park Service, welcomes pets on its grounds on a leash no longer than six feet, but not inside any park building. A slow leashed loop of the grounds is a calm setting for practicing a sit before a gate or a settle on the grass while visitors walk past. Your go-home lesson names the cues to use, and private sessions from $94 are there if a skill slips once your dog is back in Saugus.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Should a Saugus family use Dogtown for regular daycare?
Usually not as the everyday option. A drop-off and a pick-up from Saugus come to about 160 minutes of driving a day, by our estimate, and there is daycare closer to home. The visits that suit the distance are force-free board and train, an occasional Dogtown Academy day at $89, or cat grooming in a quiet studio away from the dogs.
How long is board and train, and what does it cost?
Foundation is one week, for puppies, young dogs and basic manners. Advanced is two weeks, for adolescents and real-world reliability, and adds two scheduled go-home coaching lessons. Both include daily updates and a go-home lesson. Programs are listed without prices because each one is tailored; we quote after a short assessment, and individual training sessions start from $94.
Does the Pup Van come to Saugus?
No. Saugus is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way. From Saugus the drive is about 40 minutes outside rush hour by our estimate, via Route 1 or Walnut Street to Route 128, then 128 north to its end in Gloucester.
What does Saugus charge for a dog license?
The town's 2026 application lists $12 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for an intact dog, with a $20 late fee after June 30, 2026. Licenses run April 1 to March 31 and come from the Town Clerk at 298 Central Street, Suite 7, which takes cash or check. We check for a current license at your dog's free evaluation.
Can my dog swim at Breakheart after training?
Not in a designated swimming area in summer. DCR rules keep pets out of those areas from May 1 through September 15, unless posted otherwise, and require a leash of ten feet or less elsewhere on the reservation. Breakheart's beach is at the north end of Pearce Lake. Outside those dates, read the posted signs before your dog goes near the water.
