Dogtown for Rockport dog owners: daycare, grooming and the Pup Van

Rockport is the shortest run to Dogtown of the four Pup Van towns. From downtown Rockport, Route 127 heads southwest and becomes Eastern Avenue as it crosses into Gloucester; 210 Eastern Ave comes up in about 10 to 15 minutes, near the point where Route 128 ends. From the South End and Long Beach, Route 127A along Thatcher Road passes Good Harbor and meets Eastern Avenue a few minutes from our door. Treat both as estimates. A July Saturday on Bearskin Neck adds time at the Rockport end.

If the drive is the obstacle, the Pup Van removes it. Pick-up and drop-off in Rockport cost $10 each way, and you add the van when you book a daycare day, an Academy day or an overnight stay online, in the Dogtown app or by phone. The van runs around our drop-off and pick-up windows, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, so give the front desk your street and the block of time that suits and we confirm the pick-up with you.

Rockport is the first stop on the Rockport line, and many of our Rockport dogs belong to Boston commuters. The MBTA allows leashed non-service dogs only at off-peak times, at staff discretion and never on seats, which rules out the 7 to 10 AM and 4 to 7 PM trains. In practice the dog does not ride with you: drop off on the way to the station or book the van, catch your train, and collect between 4 and 6:30 PM.

At the time of writing, Rockport bans dogs from all of its public beaches from June 1 to September 15, and for the rest of the year requires a leash or direct voice control. Front Beach, Back Beach, Cape Hedge and Pebble Beach follow the same dates, so the dog season runs September 16 to May 31. The town's beach and park regulations, linked below, carry a 2025 revision; read them before the first fall walk rather than relying on last year's memory.

Halibut Point State Park, on the Pigeon Cove side of town, requires dogs to be leashed; the quarry rim and the granite ledges above the water are the reason. It is where many Rockport dogs walk in the months the beaches are closed, and the leash rule there is a state park rule, so it does not change with the town's beach calendar.

Rockport dog licenses come from the town, and the town's Responsible Dog Owner page carries the current fee and the town's expectations of dog owners. Bring the current license to your dog's evaluation with the vaccination records for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella; we do not place a dog in a group without them. If the license lapsed over the winter, renew it before the evaluation rather than after, since the group placement waits on it.
