Dogtown for Beverly, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Beverly sits a short way down Route 128 from Eastern Ave, and its summer dog rules run by the clock: from Memorial Day to Labor Day, leashed dogs may use city parks only in set hours. This page covers the drive, those hours as the city publishes them, Beverly's licensing rules and the walks we point Beverly owners to, and how Beverly households use daycare, overnight stays, grooming and training in Gloucester.

The drive
Route 128 north to its end: about 25 minutes from Beverly
From downtown Beverly, Route 22 follows Cabot Street and then Essex Street north to Route 128 at Exit 47. Head north on 128, across the Annisquam River into Gloucester, and stay on it until the highway ends; Eastern Avenue and 210 Eastern Ave are a couple of minutes beyond. Call it about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Summer Fridays and the evening commute on 128 are slower, and the downtown stretch of Cabot Street adds a few minutes at busy times.
Beverly is outside the four Pup Van towns. The van's set rate of $10 each way covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; for a Beverly address, ask us about pick-up and we will tell you whether that day's route reaches your street and at what price. Most Beverly owners drive, and the windows suit an early start: drop-off from 6:30 to 9:30 AM on weekdays, pick-up from 4 to 6:30 PM.
Check which way your morning points before you buy a pack. If you drive south toward Boston, Gloucester is behind you, and a daycare drop-off turns into close to an hour of extra driving there and back. If your day already runs north, to a job on Cape Ann or along 128 past Beverly, Eastern Ave is on the way, and full days are the easy habit to build.
- Route 22 (Cabot and Essex Streets) to Route 128 at Exit 47
- Route 128 north to its end, then Eastern Avenue: about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- Pup Van: Beverly is outside the four van towns, so ask us about pick-up
Beverly dog hours
Memorial Day to Labor Day: Lynch Park 6 to 7:30 AM, other city parks 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM
Beverly's ordinance on dogs in parks and on beaches, section 117-10 of the city code, is printed on the Beverly Recreation site. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, leashed dogs may use Lynch Park only between 6:00 and 7:30 AM, and any other city park only between 7:30 PM and 7:30 AM. Gardens, playing fields and playground equipment areas are excluded in both cases. In the daytime hours of summer, the places left for a dog are the designated areas below.
The Parks and Recreation Commission names one dog-friendly park in each ward, where dogs must stay leashed and under control at all times: Femino Park on Lindsay Avenue in Ward 1, Independence Park in Ward 2 with its beach off limits to dogs from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM, Beverly Common in Ward 3, Cooney Athletic Field behind the outfield fence in Ward 4, Colgate Park in Ward 5 and Dix Park in Ward 6. Dogs are never allowed in the city's cemeteries, and the page warns of fines upwards of $100 per dog per offense.
| Place | Rule at the time of writing |
|---|---|

Licensing
Beverly licenses are due April 1: $20 altered, $25 intact
Every Beverly dog six months or older must be licensed by April 1 each year through the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 191 Cabot Street. The fee is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for one that is not. Skipping a year costs more than the license: the city charges a $50 failure-to-license fee for each dog not registered in the prior year plus a $20 late fee for each year missed, and the missed years must be paid before the current one.
Renewal forms arrive with the annual census mailing. You can pay online through the city's payment site, or mail the application with the fee, a copy of the rabies certificate and a self-addressed envelope, and the license comes back by post. At Dogtown we ask for the current Beverly license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records at the free evaluation; a dog whose license lapsed can join a group as soon as it is renewed.
- Due by April 1 each year: $20 spayed or neutered, $25 intact
- A missed prior year: $50 failure-to-license fee per dog, plus $20 for each year
- Online, or by mail to the City Clerk, 191 Cabot Street, with the rabies certificate
Walks and days
Long Hill on a leash, Beverly Commons for distance, Eastern Ave for the playgroup
Long Hill, The Trustees' property at 576 Essex Street, welcomes dogs on leash only and asks owners to take dog waste off the property. It has a network of woodland trails with a main loop of 1.2 miles, short enough for a weekday evening. For a longer outing, Essex County Greenbelt lists 13.2 miles of trails at Beverly Commons Conservation Area, and Greenbelt asks owners to carry a leash, leash any aggressive dog, keep noise down and carry out the waste.
None of those walks gives a dog what a playgroup does. Daycare at Dogtown is $42 a full day or $33 a half day in a group of 7 to 10 matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard and the indoor floors. Dogtown Academy, at $89 a full day, adds a training session and one-on-one trainer time. Overnight suites are $78 a night with playgroups by day, and grooming needs no evaluation: a bath runs $55 to $95 by size and a full groom $75 to $120.
Training and the first visit
Training from $94 a session, and a free evaluation to begin
Dogtown Professional Training is fear- and force-free and built on positive reinforcement. Sessions start from $94, programs are quoted after a short assessment, and enquiries hear back within the hour on weekdays. For a Beverly family the format matters as much as the method: weekly sessions mean a drive up 128 each time, Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off (ask whether your address is covered), and a one- or two-week board and train ends with go-home lessons.
The evaluation is a temperament test followed by a few supervised hours in a group, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. It is required for daycare, Academy, overnight stays and walks, and not for grooming, so a Beverly dog that only needs a bath books straight in online. Cats book the same way, into a quiet studio away from the dog floors.
