Dogtown for Middleton, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training

Middleton sits inland, with a rail trail taking shape on the old Essex Railroad and a leash rule that applies as soon as a dog leaves its own yard. This page covers the drive out to Eastern Ave, Middleton's license calendar and leash rules, and how Dogtown fits a Middleton week.

Middleton rules

In Middleton, a dog off its owner's property needs a leash under eight feet

Middleton's Board of Health rules, Chapter 270 of the town code, let the Animal Control Officer require owners to restrain dogs from running at large or loose, and they define that term closely. A dog is at large when it is off its owner's property and either unaccompanied by someone able to control it, unrestrained by a leash or chain of less than eight feet, or a danger to people or property. Fines are $25 for a first offense, $50 for a second and $100 after that.

The town's general bylaw on dogs, Chapter 107, adds that the officer can require dogs to be restrained from running at large in schools, school playgrounds, parks and public recreation areas, and whenever a dog is an annoyance or dangerous. The Middleton Rail Trail Alliance states the practical upshot on its home page: the town and the trail require dogs to be kept on a leash at all times when off the owner's property.

  • Leash or chain: under eight feet, whenever the dog is off your property
  • Fines: $25, then $50, then $100
  • Schools, playgrounds and parks: Animal Control can require restraint
  • Rail trail: a short leash at all times, droppings picked up

Licensing

Middleton licenses run January to December, with late fines from June 1

Middleton dogs over six months are licensed every calendar year at the Town Clerk's office in the Town Hall and Community Center, 105 South Main Street, in person, by mail or online. You need a current rabies certificate and proof of spaying or neutering. Licensing not finished by May 31 draws a late fee: $10 per dog after June 1, $15 after July 1 and $25 after August 1.

Check the Middleton fee with the clerk before you pay. The town's dog license page and Chapter 107 of the town code, amended on fees in 2020, list different license fees, and we will not guess which one the clerk charges. Both agree on the late schedule. Dogtown needs the current Middleton tag at your dog's free evaluation, along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.

DateMiddleton license status
January 1New license year begins
May 31Last day to license without a late fee
After June 1$10 late fee per dog
After July 1$15 late fee per dog
After August 1$25 late fee per dog

Walks

The Middleton Rail Trail and Barett Reservation: leashed walks close to home

The Middleton Rail Trail Alliance is turning a 4.5-mile stretch of the old Essex Railroad through Middleton into a multi-use trail that will run from Danvers to North Andover once complete. Its posted rules are short: open dawn to dusk, keep pets on a short leash and remove droppings, bicyclists yield to pedestrians, and bikes keep to 15 mph. A leashed dog that stays calm around bikes and strollers is the goal there.

For woods, Essex County Greenbelt's Barett Reservation on North Liberty Street has half a mile of trail on 83 acres, a small parking area or roadside parking, and dog walking among its listed uses. Greenbelt's guidelines ask owners to carry a leash, leash any dog that is aggressive, and pick up and carry out the waste, and Middleton's own leash rule applies there as it does anywhere off your property.

What a Middleton dog books at Dogtown: play days, a suite for the trip, a groom

Daycare at Dogtown is $42 a full day and $33 a half day, in playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament across indoor floors and an outdoor turf yard with pools and platforms. Regular weeks get cheaper with packs: $200 for five full days, $380 for ten, and unlimited daycare at $700 a month. Enrichment add-ons go onto any day, from a $5 lick mat to a $10 supervised treadmill session.

Middleton commuters bound for Boston are driving away from Gloucester, so be honest with yourself about twice-daily trips. Overnight stays solve that: one drop-off, a suite at $78 a night with daytime playgroups and 24/7 monitoring, and one pick-up, including the Sunday windows of 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. Grooming needs no evaluation, from a $55 bath to a $120 full-service groom, and cats are groomed in a separate studio.

  • Daycare: $42 full, $33 half; unlimited $700 a month
  • Suites: $78 a night, with Sunday drop-off and pick-up windows
  • Grooming: $55 to $120, no evaluation needed
  • Enrichment add-ons: $5 to $10 a day

Getting here

Route 62 or Route 114 to Route 128, then out to Eastern Ave

From Middleton center, Route 62 runs east through Danvers to Route 128; Route 114 east toward Danvers is the other way onto the highway. Either way, take 128 north past Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea to its end in Gloucester, then follow Eastern Avenue (Route 127) about a mile to number 210. By our estimate that is about 35 minutes outside rush hour.

Middleton is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up, since we publish a $10-each-way price only for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea and quote inland addresses like yours on request. If a pick-up cannot be arranged, the 12 to 1 PM window lets you split a half day around an errand in Gloucester, and an overnight stay needs only two trips in all.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Do Middleton dogs need to be leashed everywhere?
Off your own property, in practice yes. Middleton's Board of Health rules treat a dog as at large when it is away from home without a leash or chain under eight feet or without someone able to control it, and fines run $25, $50 and $100. The Middleton Rail Trail asks for a short leash at all times.
How far is Dogtown from Middleton?
From Middleton center it is about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate: Route 62 east or Route 114 east to Route 128, then 128 north to its end in Gloucester and on along Eastern Avenue. Weekday commuter traffic on 128 can lengthen it, so allow extra time for a morning drop-off before 9:30 AM.
Which Middleton license fee is right?
Ask the Town Clerk. The town's dog license page and the town code give different fees for spayed or neutered dogs and for intact ones, so neither figure is settled. Both put the late fees after June 1, and the clerk's page sets the license year at January to December. Whatever you pay, bring the current Middleton tag to Dogtown's evaluation.
Does Dogtown pick up dogs in Middleton?
Only on request: Middleton is outside the Pup Van towns, and the van's published $10-each-way price covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask us about pick-up. Send the front desk your Middleton street and the days you want, and ask whether a pick-up is available and what it would cost.
Are there Dogtown dogs from Middleton?
Ask us about Dogtown dogs from Middleton. We show a client dog's name, photo or story only with written permission from its family, so this page lists none yet. If your Middleton dog becomes a regular and you would like it featured, mention it at pick-up.
