Drive times to Eastern Ave from every corner of Gloucester

We sit on Eastern Avenue, which is Route 127 on its way to Rockport, a short run past the rotaries where Route 128 ends. From downtown, Main Street to Eastern Avenue takes about five minutes. East Gloucester and Rocky Neck are closer still, and Bass Rocks and the Good Harbor side reach us along Thatcher Road and Route 127A in a few minutes. Every figure here is an estimate; Fiesta week and summer Saturdays stretch all of them.

Magnolia is the long one, about 15 minutes along Route 127 through downtown. West Gloucester comes in on Route 128 in 10 to 12 minutes, and Riverdale and the Grant Circle side are under ten. Lanesville and Annisquam follow Washington Street around the cape to Grant Circle, then 128 to its end: 12 to 15 minutes on a normal morning.

The Pup Van covers all of Gloucester for $10 each way, which for Magnolia or Lanesville is the difference between two 30-minute round trips a day and none. Book it with the daycare, Academy or overnight day; the front desk confirms a time inside the windows for your neighborhood. The van covers Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at the same price, so a household split between Lanesville and Rockport pays the same either way.

Gloucester dog life

Beaches October 1 to April 30, even days at Good Harbor, odd days at Wingaersheek

Gloucester's public beaches take dogs from October 1 to April 30, at the time of writing, with a twist per beach. Good Harbor allows dogs on even-numbered days only and closes to dogs from April 1 to protect nesting piping plovers, so its dog season ends March 31. Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days. Plum Cove and Cressy Beach are open to dogs in the off-season without a day rule. The city's beach page, linked below, is the one to check each fall.

Off the sand, the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park (65 Hough Ave) is a fenced two acres of off-leash space with separate areas for small and large dogs. Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester, a Trustees property, welcomes dogs on its trails, and it is the reason a West Gloucester dog often arrives at daycare with burrs and a wet belly.

Gloucester dog licenses come from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee, with a current rabies certificate. Renewals are late after April 30 and carry a $20 penalty. We check the current license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records at the evaluation, so renew in April and the paperwork is settled for the year.

What Gloucester books

Early drop-offs for the waterfront, walks for downtown, suites for Fiesta week

Gloucester still works early. Our doors open at 6:30 AM on weekdays, and the first drop-off window, 6:30 to 9:30 AM, exists for the waterfront, hospital and trade shifts that start before eight. Daycare is $42 full and $33 half; the full-day 10-pack is $380 and the unlimited membership is $700 a month for the dog who comes every day.

Downtown and East Gloucester households with a short commute often want a walk rather than a day: 20, 30 or 60 minutes at home for $25, $35 or $55, by Dogtown staff, with a photo and a note after each one. Ask us whether we cover your street. Overnight suites at $78 fill for St. Peter's Fiesta week and the fireworks that follow it, when a noise-sensitive dog does better in a suite with a playgroup by day than in a house near the parade route.

Grooming runs all year: a bath is $55 to $95 by size, full service $75 to $120, no evaluation. Winter salt and beach-season sand, then mud in March and April, then the summer coat: our groomers see the whole Gloucester year on the table. The cat room takes Gloucester's cats in a quiet studio, Full Bath $95, Minimal Trims $45.

The evaluation, the license and the first day, in order

The evaluation is a temperament test with our trainers followed by a few supervised hours in a group of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. It is required for daycare, Dogtown Academy, overnight stays and walks, and not for grooming. We meet you and your dog in the lobby, take the paperwork and place the dog where it fits.

From there everything runs through the Dogtown app or the front desk: bookings, the report card after each day, weekly deals and messages. Drop-off and pick-up windows are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays, and 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM on Saturdays. On Sundays the doors open only for overnight guests, from 8 to 10 AM and again from 4 to 6 PM.

Which Gloucester neighborhoods does the Pup Van serve?

All of them. Gloucester is a Pup Van town end to end, from Magnolia to Lanesville, at $10 each way. Add the van when you book daycare, an Academy day or an overnight stay, tell the front desk your street, and we confirm a pick-up time inside our drop-off and pick-up windows for that day.

Where do I get a Gloucester dog license, and does Dogtown need it?

From the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee, with a current rabies certificate, and late after April 30 with a $20 penalty. Yes, we need it. A current city license and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records are checked at the free evaluation before a dog joins a group.

Can I take my dog to Good Harbor before daycare?

On even-numbered days between October 1 and March 31, at the time of writing; Good Harbor closes to dogs from April 1 for piping plovers. Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd days through April 30. Drop off by 9:30 AM or in the 12 to 1 PM window afterward, and add a bath ($55 to $95 by size) if the sand came along.

Do you walk dogs downtown?

Ask us, and we will tell you for your street. Walks are 20, 30 or 60 minutes at home for $25, $35 or $55, led by Dogtown staff, with a photo and a note after every outing, and a free evaluation comes first. Coverage depends on the address and the season, so send the street and the days you need through the contact form.

Can my dog stay with you over Fiesta week and the fireworks?

Yes, once the dog has passed the free evaluation. Overnight suites are $78 a night with 24/7 monitoring and playgroups by day, and those nights book up early, so reserve as soon as you know your plans. Add the Deluxe bundle (+$15 a night) for the memory-foam bed and a daily treadmill or enrichment session.
