Dogtown for Salem, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training

Salem dogs live with a citywide leash ordinance and one fenced off-leash park that needs an annual pass, and Salem cats need grooming as much as the dogs do. This page covers the drive to Eastern Ave, the Salem rules as we found them in October 2026, and how Salem households use daycare, overnight stays, grooming and training in Gloucester.

The drive

Route 1A to Beverly, Route 22 to Route 128: about 35 minutes

Leave Salem on Route 1A north over the Essex Bridge. On the Beverly side, Route 22 begins where Cabot, Rantoul and Water Streets meet, and follows Cabot Street and then Essex Street north to Route 128 at Exit 47. From there it is 128 north to its end in Gloucester and a couple of minutes along Eastern Avenue to number 210: about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, with downtown Beverly the slow part.

Salem is outside the four Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up for your street before you plan around it; the $10 each-way rate covers only Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. If you drive, the weekday windows are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays run 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. From Salem a full day nearly always beats a half day, since one round trip covers it.

  • Route 1A over the Essex Bridge, then Route 22 to Route 128 at Exit 47
  • Route 128 north to its end, then Eastern Avenue: about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
  • Pup Van: Salem is outside the four van towns, so ask us about pick-up

Salem dog rules

A leash everywhere in Salem, licenses at $10 or $15, and a late fee after July 1

Salem's ordinance requires a dog off its owner's premises, unless it is on someone else's property with their consent, to be controlled and restrained by a leash of appropriate length. The fine is $50, and the ordinance names public beaches, parks, malls and market areas specifically. Owners must also carry something to pick up with and must remove waste from sidewalks, streets, parks and other people's property, with a $50 fine for each offense.

The City Clerk at City Hall, 93 Washington Street, licenses dogs at $10 a year for a spayed or neutered dog, with proof, and $15 for one that is not, and no dog can be licensed without a current rabies vaccination. Licenses expire each April, but the clerk's page says the city extends the deadline to the second week of May, after its early-May rabies clinic at the Salem Police Station. A separate $15 late fee applies if the license is not renewed by July 1, and any unpaid prior year is due too.

  • A leash of appropriate length anywhere off your own property; $50 fine
  • License: $10 spayed or neutered, $15 intact
  • Deadline extended to the second week of May; $15 late fee after July 1
  • A current rabies vaccination before any license is issued

Off leash in Salem

Leslie's Retreat Park: a Pooch Pass from April 1 to March 31

Salem's fenced dog park is at Leslie's Retreat Park on the North River, off Route 114 and North Street. Every dog there needs a Pooch Pass, an annual tag valid from April 1 through March 31 that costs $25 per dog. To get one you show the dog's municipal license, current vaccinations and proof of spay or neuter, and sign a waiver of liability; dogs must be at least six months old.

Inside the second gate, dogs may be off leash under voice control. A guardian must be 18 or older and may supervise no more than three dogs at once, visitors from 10 to 17 need an adult with them, and children under 10 are not allowed inside the fence. Toys and sports equipment stay out. Those rules suit a dog that already plays well with strangers; a dog still learning group manners is better off building them in a matched playgroup with a handler watching.

  • Pooch Pass: $25 per dog, valid April 1 through March 31
  • Dogs six months or older, spayed or neutered, licensed and vaccinated
  • Up to three dogs per guardian; no children under 10 inside the fence

Salem walks and grooming

Lead Mills and Wyman Woods on the Marblehead line, then a bath

Lead Mills and Wyman Woods sit on the Salem and Marblehead boundary at the mouth of the Forest River, owned and managed by the two communities and listed by Essex County Greenbelt with about two miles of trails and dog walking among the activities. The entrances are on Lafayette Street, one near the Forest River and one near Gatchell Playground, with limited parking at both, and on the Salem side the city's leash ordinance applies.

A walk along the river mouth in winter usually ends in the tub. Grooming at Dogtown needs no evaluation: a bath runs $55 to $95 by size, a full groom $75 to $120, and add-ons include a $16 nail trim. Salem cats come to us as well. The cat studio is quiet and separate from the dog floors, with Full Service at $120, a Full Bath at $95, Minimal Trims at $45 and nail clipping alone at $20.

Days, nights and training

Daycare, overnight stays and training for Salem dogs

Daycare is $42 a full day or $33 a half day, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard with its pools and platforms and the indoor floors. An Academy day, $89 in full, layers a session with our trainer onto the play. Overnight suites are $78 a night with playgroups by day and monitoring around the clock, and Sunday is reserved for overnight drop-off and pick-up.

Training is fear- and force-free and built on positive reinforcement, from $94 a session, and enquiries hear back within the hour on weekdays. A Salem sidewalk is a real test of leash manners; Calm & Connected and the one-week Foundation board and train both work on leash skills and impulse control. New dogs start with the free evaluation, on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, before daycare, Academy, overnight stays or walks.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How do I get from Salem to Dogtown?
Take Route 1A north over the Essex Bridge into Beverly, then Route 22 up Cabot and Essex Streets to Route 128, and 128 north to its end in Gloucester. Eastern Avenue brings you to number 210. Allow about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and more when downtown Beverly is busy.
Does the Pup Van run to Salem?
Salem is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way rate is for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Tell the front desk your Salem street on the customer inquiry form, and we will say whether the route can reach it on your days and what it would cost.
Does my dog need a Pooch Pass to come to Dogtown?
No. The Pooch Pass is Salem's own tag for the dog park at Leslie's Retreat Park, valid April 1 through March 31 at $25 per dog. Dogtown asks for a current Salem dog license and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, which we check at the free evaluation before your dog joins a playgroup.
Can you groom my Salem cat?
Yes, in a quiet studio away from the dogs. Full Service, with bath, shaving, trims and nails, is $120; a Full Bath is $95; Minimal Trims are $45; and nail clipping on its own is $20. Every cat is assessed before the groom, cats book without an evaluation, and a cat that cannot be groomed safely is referred to a vet.
When is the Salem dog license due?
Salem licenses expire each April, and at the time of writing the City Clerk extends the deadline to the second week of May, after the early-May rabies clinic. Renew by July 1 to avoid the separate $15 late fee. The fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 otherwise, and a current rabies vaccination is required.
