Dogtown for Georgetown, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Georgetown has a state forest on its doorstep where dogs may run off leash on the trails, one of only seven such places in DCR's North Region. This page sets out the rules that come with that freedom, the town's license and park rules, two ways to drive to Eastern Ave, and the Dogtown services that help a Georgetown dog earn its off-leash miles.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Interstate 95 south to Route 62, then Route 128 north to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, 1 Library Street: $10 spayed or neutered, $15 intact; January to December license, with a $25 late fee per dog after the last day of February (georgetownma.gov; town code 15-10)
- The beach rule
- American Legion Park: only service animals on the beach, in the water, on the fields and in the picnic areas; leashed pets in the parking lots only; open dawn to dusk (town code chapter 550)
- A trail we know
- Georgetown-Rowley State Forest (DCR), off Route 97: dogs off leash on the trails under voice control, leashed in the parking area, open sunrise to sunset (mass.gov)

Georgetown-Rowley State Forest
Georgetown-Rowley State Forest lets dogs off leash on its trails, under DCR's voice-control rules
The Department of Conservation and Recreation names Georgetown-Rowley State Forest among the properties in its North Region where dogs may go off leash, in this case on the trails. The forest covers more than 1,000 acres off Route 97, is open from sunrise to sunset, and has parking off Pingree Farm Road, with the Bay Circuit Trail running through. Hunting is among the activities DCR lists for the forest, so wear something bright, and put something bright on your dog, during hunting seasons.
Off leash, in DCR's terms, means your dog stays in sight, comes the moment it is called, stays when told, and never charges or chases people, dogs, horses or wildlife. Every dog is leashed in the parking area and when entering or leaving the off-leash trails, the owner carries one leash in hand for each dog, and no one brings more than four dogs at a time. DCR also asks that every dog wear current license and rabies tags.
- Off leash on the trails; leashed in the parking area
- In sight, comes when called, stays when told, chases nothing
- One leash in hand per dog; four dogs per person at most
- Open sunrise to sunset; parking off Pingree Farm Road
Town rules
Georgetown licenses turn late after February, and the park beach is for service animals only
The Town Clerk at 1 Library Street licenses every dog over six months old for a license year that runs January 1 to December 31. At the time of writing the fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for an intact dog, and since January 1, 2023 the bylaw has added a $25 late fee per dog if the license is not in place by the last day of February. The clerk needs the rabies certificate and, where it applies, the spay or neuter certificate, and license payments can be made online. A dog allowed to run at large brings fines of $10, then $25.
American Legion Park has the rule Georgetown dog owners most need to know. Under chapter 550 of the town code, only service animals are allowed on the beach, in the water, on the fields, in the picnic areas and on the playground, and a leashed pet may go no farther than the parking lot. The park is open dawn to dusk. Lufkins Brook Conservation Area is open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, with hunting and trapping banned there.
- License: Town Clerk, 1 Library Street; $10 or $15
- $25 late fee per dog after the last day of February
- American Legion Park: service animals only on the beach, fields and picnic areas
- Leashed pets in that park's parking lots only
Two ways to Gloucester
Interstate 95 and Route 128, or Route 133 east through Rowley, Ipswich and Essex
The quick way leaves Georgetown on Route 133 to Interstate 95, heads south to Route 1 and Route 62, then east on 62 to Route 128 north. From there it is 128 to its end in Gloucester and a short run along Eastern Avenue to number 210, about 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. The back way is Route 133 east through Rowley, Ipswich and Essex to Route 128 in West Gloucester: shorter on the map, slower on the clock, about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.
Georgetown is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way price is set for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and for a Georgetown street the front desk will tell you what is possible and what it would cost. If you drive, aim for the early window, 6:30 to 9:30 AM on weekdays, and collect between 4 and 6:30 PM; Saturdays run 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, with a midday window from 12 to 1 PM on both.
What Georgetown books
Academy days for off-leash manners, baths after the forest, suites for the weeks away
A dog that runs free in a state forest needs a recall that holds when a deer crosses the trail, and that is built, not wished for. Dogtown Academy is structured daycare with a trainer: $89 a full day or $69 a half day, every day with a training session, enrichment, fitness work and one-on-one trainer time, and a report card at pick-up. Training sessions start from $94, and Canine Campus runs two, four or six weeks of training and adventure days with pick-up and drop-off; ask whether your Georgetown address is covered.
The forest also sends dogs home with burrs, mud and, from April to November, the risk of ticks. A bath is $55 to $95 by size with no evaluation, de-matting runs $15 per 20 minutes, and a sniff room session or a puzzle game ($7 each) can go onto any daycare day for the dog who needs to use its nose. Overnight suites are $78 a night with playgroups by day, and daycare is $42 full or $33 half, in groups of 7 to 10 matched by size and temperament.
Starting out
One weekday morning at Eastern Ave gets a Georgetown dog started
The free evaluation is a temperament test followed by a few supervised hours in a group, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. We watch how your dog plays, rests and responds to our handlers, then place it in the group that fits. It is required for daycare, Academy days, overnight stays and walks; grooming books straight in online or in the Dogtown app.
We publish stories about Dogtown dogs from Georgetown only with the family's written permission, so for now, ask us how Georgetown dogs settle in when you call. Bring the license and the vaccination records on the first morning, and use FIRST15 for 15 percent off the first daycare visit. After each visit, a report card in the Dogtown app tells you how the day went.
