Dogtown for Newburyport, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training

Newburyport is the far edge of the North Shore for us, and we would rather say so than pretend the drive is short. What it reaches is a 10,000-square-foot facility with small matched playgroups, overnight suites, a trainer-led Academy and a grooming studio for dogs and cats. Below are the route, Newburyport's own dog rules and the visits worth planning.

Plum Island and the city

No dogs on Plum Island beaches May 15 to September 15, and a firm leash everywhere else

The city's animal control office puts the Plum Island rule plainly: no dogs, even leashed, on the beach from May 15 to September 15. In the off season dogs may be on the beach on a leash; they are not allowed off leash there at any time. The city asks owners to keep dogs well away from nesting shorebirds, seals and any stranded wildlife, and to bring a leash, waste bags and fresh water.

On land, Newburyport's leash ordinance, section 3-26 of the city code, is strict: a dog outside its owner's property must be held firmly on a leash, with fines of $50 for a first offense, $75 for a second and $100 after that. A separate waste rule requires you to carry the means to pick up whenever you are out with a dog in a public place, on the same $50, $75 and $100 scale.

The exceptions are three designated off-leash areas, listed in the table below, each with its own exclusions. Their rules are detailed: dogs licensed and vaccinated, leashed on the way in and out, at least four months old to go off leash, no more than two dogs off leash per owner, none off leash on playgrounds, courts or athletic fields, and a $50 fine for breaking any of them.

Licensing

Newburyport licenses are due April 1 and cost $10 or $15 at the City Clerk

Dogs are licensed every year by April 1 through the City Clerk's office at City Hall, 60 Pleasant Street. The fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for one that is not, and the clerk cannot process an application without a veterinarian's rabies certificate showing when the current vaccination expires. Applications go online with the documents uploaded, or in person if necessary, and the license and tag come back by mail.

Renewals registered from June 1 onward carry a late fee. The city's animal ordinance also lets residents aged 65 and over license their dogs without paying the fee, though late fees still apply to them, so an older owner gains nothing by waiting. Bring that tag to Dogtown. The free evaluation checks a current license from your home city along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, and a dog without them cannot join a playgroup, an Academy day or an overnight stay.

  • Due: April 1 each year, with a late fee from June 1
  • Fee: $10 spayed or neutered, $15 not
  • Required: a rabies certificate showing its expiration date
  • Residents 65 and over: no license fee, but late fees still apply

Maudslay

Maudslay State Park: 16 miles of trail, dogs on a leash, sunrise to sunset

Maudslay State Park, at 74 Curzon Mill Road, is the state's walking ground in Newburyport: 19th-century gardens, meadows, tall pines and one of the largest naturally occurring stands of mountain laurel in Massachusetts, with about 16 miles of trails. DCR lists it as dog-friendly on one firm condition: dogs must remain on a leash. The park is open sunrise to sunset, swimming and hunting are not allowed, and a daily parking fee applies all year, $5 for a Massachusetts plate.

If leash walking at Maudslay is a struggle, that is a training question rather than a daycare one. Training sessions at Dogtown start from $94, and the one-week Foundation board and train works on leash skills, place, stay and recall, and impulse control, with daily updates and a go-home lesson. We quote board and train after a short assessment rather than list a price here.

  • Address: 74 Curzon Mill Road, Newburyport
  • Dogs: on a leash at all times
  • Hours: sunrise to sunset
  • Parking: daily fee all year, $5 with a Massachusetts plate

Worth the drive

From 45 minutes away, plan around suites, Academy packs and grooming

Daily daycare from Newburyport is a long round trip, twice a day, so be realistic about it. It works for a household that passes through Cape Ann anyway or works from home with time to spare, at $42 a full day or $33 a half day, with five- and ten-day packs that lower the rate. For a dog who needs company every weekday, a provider closer to home may suit your routine better, and we would rather you hear that from us.

Overnight stays are where the drive makes most sense: one drop-off, one pick-up, and a suite at $78 a night with daytime playgroups and 24/7 monitoring in between. The Deluxe bundle (+$15 a night) adds a stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session and an orthopedic memory-foam bed. Academy packs work the same way: five full days cost $415 and ten cost $785. Grooming needs no evaluation, and Newburyport cats are welcome in the studio as well.

Route and first visit

Route 1A, Route 133 and Route 128: the way to Eastern Ave, and the first visit

From downtown Newburyport, head south on Route 1A through Newbury and Rowley into Ipswich, turn east on Route 133 through Essex, and join Route 128 in West Gloucester for the last stretch to its end; Eastern Avenue runs about a mile from there to number 210. It is about 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. The route passes through Essex, a Pup Van town, but Newburyport itself is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up.

The free evaluation runs Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a group. From Newburyport that means an early start, so book it for a day when you can work from Cape Ann or wait nearby. Grooming-only visits skip it entirely, so a Newburyport dog can come straight in for a bath.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my dog go to Plum Island in summer?
Not onto the beach between May 15 and September 15, at the time of writing: the city says no dogs, even on a leash, in that window. The rest of the year dogs may be on the beach on a leash, never off it. Check the city's animal control page before you go, since wildlife rules can change.
How long does it take to drive from Newburyport to Dogtown?
About 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, by Route 1A south to Ipswich, Route 133 east through Essex and Route 128 to its end in Gloucester. Summer traffic on Route 133 through Essex can add time to the Newburyport run. Because of the distance, we suggest Newburyport families start with a suite or an Academy pack rather than daily daycare.
Does the Pup Van come to Newburyport?
Newburyport is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up, knowing that the $10-each-way van price applies only in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. For an address this far north, ask the front desk about availability and pricing, and plan on driving until you have an answer.
Where can my dog run off leash in Newburyport?
In three designated areas under the city ordinance: Cashman Park from 7:30 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM, and Moseley Woods and March's Hill from dawn to dusk, each with excluded spots such as playgrounds and courts. Everywhere else off your property, a dog must be held firmly on a leash, with fines starting at $50.
Are there Dogtown dogs from Newburyport?
Ask us about Dogtown dogs from Newburyport. We publish a client dog only with its family's written permission, so no Newburyport dogs are shown on this page. If your dog comes for stays or Academy days and you would like its story told, the front desk can set that up with you.
