Dogtown for Lynn, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Lynn has its own groomers, sitters and a city dog park, so this page does not pretend Gloucester is around the corner. It sets out what Dogtown offers that can justify the trip, how the drive goes, and the city rules a Lynn dog owner lives with, from the April 1 license renewal to the restraint ordinance in Lynn Woods.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 1A through Swampscott and Salem to Route 128 in Beverly, then 128 north to its end and Eastern Avenue; about 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- City Clerk, Room 201, Lynn City Hall (3 City Hall Square): $12 per dog on the city's application revised July 2024; renewed April 1 each year; rabies certificate required (lynnma.gov)
- The beach rule
- King's Beach, Red Rock Park and Lynn Beach (DCR, Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach Reservation): no dogs or other pets on the beach April 1 to September 15, service animals excepted; leash of 10 feet or less (mass.gov; 302 CMR 12.13)

Straight answer
For everyday daycare, look closer to Lynn; for three kinds of visit, the drive pays
A daycare day means two round trips, one at drop-off and one at pick-up, and from Lynn that adds up to about three hours behind the wheel by our estimate. For a dog who needs a playgroup three or four days a week, that is too much car and too little home. Lynn has its own options for routine care, and most Lynn families sensibly compare those first. We would rather say so here than have you discover it in February traffic on Route 1A.
The visits that justify the trip are the ones where you drive once and get a lot back. A cat groom in a quiet studio covers a season of coat care in one appointment. A board-and-train stay, the one-week Foundation or the two-week Advanced program, means a single drop-off and a single collection, with daily updates in between and a go-home lesson at the end. An occasional Dogtown Academy day, $89 full or $69 half, gives a busy adolescent a trainer's structure instead of one more play session.
- Cat grooming from $45 for Minimal Trims to $120 for Full Service
- Board and train: Foundation, 1 week, or Advanced, 2 weeks, quoted after a short assessment
- Dogtown Academy: $89 a full day, $69 a half day
- Three or four playgroup days a week: usually better nearer home
The cat studio
For a Lynn cat, the quiet studio means one groom can carry a long coat for months
Cats at Dogtown are groomed in a quiet room away from the dog floors, by cat behavior specialists, and every cat is assessed for coat condition and temperament before anything starts. The handling is low-stress and paced by the cat. If a cat cannot be groomed safely that day, we stop and refer the family to a veterinarian rather than pushing on. Grooming needs no evaluation, for cats or dogs, so the first appointment can be booked online or in the Dogtown app.
For a long-haired cat, mats are often the reason to book. A coat that has knotted close to the skin is uncomfortable to brush out at home, and a partial shave by someone who reads feline body language can be the kinder fix. Minimal Trims, at $45, is a trim and partial shave with no bath, enough for a few problem patches. The Full Service, at $120, is the reset for a coat that has gotten away from you, with a bath, shaving, trims and nails in one visit.
| Cat service | What it includes | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full Service | Full bath, shaving, trims and nails | $120 |
| Full Bath | Bath with water, nails and a brush-out | $95 |
| Minimal Trims | Trim and partial shaving, no bath | $45 |
| Nail clipping | Nails only | $20 |
The route
Route 1A through Swampscott and Salem, then Route 128 to its end: about 45 minutes
From Lynn, Route 1A leaves the city as Paradise Road through Swampscott, becomes Loring Avenue at Vinnin Square, then follows Lafayette Street into downtown Salem. It crosses the Veterans Memorial Bridge into Beverly, where you pick up Route 128 north. Follow 128 past Manchester-by-the-Sea to where it ends in Gloucester, and Eastern Avenue brings you to number 210 within a couple of minutes. The whole run is about 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and downtown Salem is the likeliest place to lose time.
Lynn is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 fare is set for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea only, so for a Lynn street the front desk will tell you what is possible rather than us printing a number here. Our weekday drop-off and pick-up windows run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and the midday window usually avoids the commuter traffic in both directions.
Lynn dog life
Lynn renews licenses on April 1 and keeps dogs restrained everywhere, Lynn Woods included
Lynn licenses dogs through the City Clerk's office in Room 201 at City Hall, 3 City Hall Square, and the city says licenses must be renewed on April 1 each year. Its application, revised in July 2024, lists a fee of $12 per dog. To license by mail, send the form with a copy of the rabies certificate, proof of spay or neuter where it applies, a check to the City of Lynn and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Bring the current license to your Dogtown evaluation with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
The city's leash law is plain: no dog may run at large at any time, so off its own property a Lynn dog is kept on a leash. The application lists the penalties as $25 for a first offense and $50 for each one after. Lynn Woods applies the same restraint ordinance across its 2,200 acres, keeps pets out of the reservoirs because they hold the city's drinking water, and is open sunrise to sunset. Jackson Path, by the main entrance off Pennybrook Road, has a picnic area about 100 yards in.
On the shore, King's Beach, Red Rock Park and Lynn Beach sit along Lynn Shore Drive in a reservation managed by the state's Department of Conservation and Recreation. For this reservation, DCR's own page sets the dog closure at April 1 to September 15, with service animals excepted, and the state requires a leash of ten feet or less on DCR land. At the time of writing, that makes mid-September to the end of March the sand season for a Lynn dog. The Barkland Avenue Dog Park on Parkland Avenue asks for a visible tag, the city license and a handler over 18.
- License: City Clerk, Room 201, City Hall; $12 per dog on the July 2024 application; renew April 1
- Leash law: no dog at large at any time; $25 first offense, $50 after
- Lynn Woods: restrained dogs, no pets in the reservoirs, sunrise to sunset
- Lynn Shore beaches (DCR): no dogs or other pets April 1 to September 15
One trip, done well
Make the first visit count: paperwork, the right program and a groom if the coat needs it
For an Academy day or an overnight stay, the free evaluation comes first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. It is a temperament test followed by a few supervised hours in a group, so plan to wait nearby or come back later in the morning. For board and train, start with the training enquiry form instead; we reply within one hour on business days, and the program is settled before you set out from Lynn.
A dog already at Eastern Ave for a daycare day or a stay can be groomed during the visit, which saves a second drive for a bath ($55 to $95 by size) or a full groom ($75 to $120). New customers can use the code FIRST15 for 15 percent off a first daycare visit, a fair test of whether a day in a group suits your dog.
