Dogtown for Wenham, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Wenham sits just past the four towns our Pup Van serves, close enough that a run out to Eastern Ave fits before the workday. Here is the route, the Dogtown services that suit a Wenham week, and the town's own dog rules as they read on Wenham's pages in October 2026.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 1A south to Route 128, Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester, then Eastern Avenue (Route 127) to 210 Eastern Ave: about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Wenham Town Hall, 138 Main St: $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact, free for owners 70 and over; license year January 1 to December 31 (wenhamma.gov; Wenham Code ch. 100)
- The beach rule
- Pleasant Pond Beach: no pets allowed on the beach; beach hours 10 AM to 6 PM from Memorial Day through Labor Day (town rules revised May 12, 2026)
- A trail we know
- Cedar Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, Cherry St (Mass Audubon): dog walking prohibited; Nickerson Knoll, opposite 82 Cedar St (Essex County Greenbelt): dog walking listed, carry a leash

The drive
Route 1A to Route 128 and out to Eastern Ave: about 25 minutes from Wenham
From Wenham center the plainest run is Route 1A south into Beverly, then Route 128 north for the rest of the way. Stay on 128 until it ends in Gloucester and follow Eastern Avenue, which is Route 127, for about a mile toward Rockport; 210 Eastern Ave is on that stretch. By our estimate that is about 25 minutes outside rush hour. A back-road option heads through Hamilton and Essex on Route 22 and Route 133 and joins 128 in West Gloucester in a similar time.
Wenham is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up, since the van's published price of $10 each way covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and for any other address the front desk quotes pricing and availability on request. If you drive yourself, our weekday drop-off windows set the rhythm: 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM.
Weigh the direction honestly. If your job points south toward Boston, Gloucester is the other way, and a daycare day means the Wenham to Eastern Ave run twice. Daily daycare fits people who work from home or nearby; for everyone else, overnight stays, a groom or a block of Academy days make the trip worth it, since each needs only one round trip.
- Route: 1A south, 128 north to its end, then Eastern Avenue (Route 127)
- Time: about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- Pup Van: Wenham is outside the van's four towns, so ask us
- Weekday windows: 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM, 4 to 6:30 PM
Wenham dog rules
Wenham licenses run January to December, cost $15 or $20, and are free at 70
Every Wenham dog six months and older is licensed each calendar year through the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 138 Main Street. The fee is $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact dog, and a resident aged 70 or over pays nothing, though the application and a current rabies certificate are still needed. Pay online by card or e-check, or bring or mail the Dog Registration Application, or use the drop box; the office takes checks and cash. The registration notice comes with the annual census in late December or early January.
Two details catch newcomers. Wenham repealed its separate late charge for dog licenses, effective January 1, 2023. Breaches of the animal bylaw, Chapter 100, carry fines on its noncriminal schedule: a written warning first, then $25, $50 and $100, with each day a separate offense. And the town's general bylaws carry no leash section at the time of writing: Chapter 100 covers licensing, impoundment and nuisance or dangerous dogs. A household with more than three dogs needs a personal kennel license, $50 for four.
Why it matters to us: Dogtown asks every dog joining a playgroup, an Academy day or an overnight stay for a current license from its home town, plus Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, and we check both at the evaluation. A Wenham tag is exactly what we need; a Wenham dog does not need a Gloucester license, and a grooming-only visit skips the evaluation altogether.
- License year: January 1 to December 31
- Fee: $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact, no charge for owners 70 and over
- Where: Town Clerk, Wenham Town Hall, 138 Main Street, or online
- Animal bylaw fines: a warning, then $25, $50 and $100
Walks and water
No pets on Pleasant Pond Beach, no dogs at Cedar Pond, and a Greenbelt knoll that allows them
Pleasant Pond is Wenham's swimming spot, and its posted rules, revised May 12, 2026, say that no pets are allowed on the beach. Beach hours are 10 AM to 6 PM from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the lot is for Wenham and Hamilton sticker holders only, and there are no lifeguards. A water-loving dog will not get a swim there, which is one reason the splash pools in our turf yard matter in July.
Mass Audubon's Cedar Pond Wildlife Sanctuary off Cherry Street is the other name Wenham walkers know: 158 acres and about 3 miles of trail, including an accessible path, open dawn to dusk. Its property rules prohibit dog walking, so the dog stays home for that one. For a walk together, Essex County Greenbelt's Nickerson Knoll, opposite 82 Cedar Street, lists dog walking on half a mile of trail with roadside parking, and Greenbelt asks owners to carry a leash, leash any aggressive dog and carry out the waste.

What a Wenham week can look like at Dogtown: play days, a groom, a suite
Daycare is $42 a full day and $33 a half day, in playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament across our indoor floors and turf yard. Packs lower the day rate: five full days for $200 or ten for $380, five half days for $150 or ten for $290, and unlimited daycare at $700 a month. For a Wenham dog who needs more than play, a Dogtown Academy day ($89 full, $69 half) adds training, enrichment, fitness and one-on-one trainer time, with a report card to read in the app.
Overnight stays are $78 a night in a suite, with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring; the Classic bundle adds $10 a night and the Deluxe $15. Grooming needs no evaluation: a bath runs $55 to $95 by size and a full-service groom $75 to $120. Cats are welcome in a quiet studio with our cat behavior specialists, from $45 for minimal trims to $120 for full service. At-home walks depend on the address, so ask us whether we cover your Wenham street.

Getting started
Starting from Wenham: one weekday-morning visit, then book the days you want
Everything except grooming begins with the free evaluation, held Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. It is a temperament test followed by a few supervised hours in a group, so drop off on your way somewhere and come back for your dog later. New Wenham customers can use the code FIRST15 for 15 percent off that first daycare visit.
After that first morning, booking moves online. The Dogtown app and our booking page hold your dog's days, the report cards from each visit and your messages to the front desk, so you can change a day or add a bath to a daycare visit without picking up the phone. The app also carries the weekly deals posted for regulars.
