No leash law, and the beaches and Centennial Grove close to dogs June through August

Essex is the Cape Ann town without a leash law, which surprises people moving in from Gloucester or Manchester. What the town does regulate is the summer: at the time of writing, Essex closes its beaches and Centennial Grove to dogs in June, July and August. For the other nine months, the town's Dog Licenses and Information page, linked below, is where to confirm the current wording before you plan a walk.

The marsh sets the grooming calendar. Clam flats, tidal creeks and causeway mud turn a Lab or a doodle brown from the elbows down, and dried salt marsh sits stiff in a coat. A bath at Dogtown runs $55 to $95 by size and needs no evaluation, and the antiseptic or fungal shampoo add-on is $8 for itchy or irritated skin. Next door in Ipswich, Crane Beach takes leashed dogs from October 1 to March 31, which is where many Essex dogs spend their winter mornings.

Essex dog licenses come from the town, and the same page carries the fee and the renewal date alongside the summer closure. Bring the current license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records to the evaluation. Our team does not enroll a dog in a playgroup without both. If the license has lapsed, renew it before the evaluation rather than after, because a place in a group waits on the paperwork.

The route

Route 133 to Gloucester, then Route 128 to its end: about 20 minutes

From Essex center, Route 133 runs east across the town line into West Gloucester and meets Route 128. Follow 128 to where it ends at the rotaries, and Eastern Avenue is a couple of minutes on; 210 Eastern Ave is on the Rockport side of them. Call it 20 minutes as an estimate. Summer weekend traffic on 133 through the causeway and on 128 near the bridge can add ten more.

The Pup Van runs Route 133 for Essex households at $10 each way, the same price as Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea despite the longer run. Tick the van when you book daycare, an Academy day or an overnight stay online or in the Dogtown app, tell the front desk your street, and we confirm a time inside the drop-off and pick-up windows: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM.

Essex has no station on the Rockport line. Commuters drive to Manchester or West Gloucester for the train, or take Route 128 south by car. Either way the dog is not part of the commute, so the pattern that works is a van pick-up after you leave, or a drop-off at Eastern Ave before 9:30 AM on the way to 128.

What Essex books

Suites for travel, grooming for the marsh, daycare for the commute

Overnight stays are the Essex favorite. Suites are $78 a night with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring; add the Classic bundle for $10 a night (a daily homemade pupsicle or puppy cup, 10 percent off grooming) or the Deluxe for $15 (a stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, an orthopedic memory-foam bed, 15 percent off grooming). Sunday drop-off and pick-up for overnight guests run 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.

Daycare is $42 full and $33 half, and the 10-packs ($380 and $290) suit the Essex household that books two fixed days a week. Cats ride along too: the cat room is a quiet studio away from the dog floors, with a Full Bath at $95, Minimal Trims at $45 and nail clipping at $20. Starting out

The free evaluation is the one trip worth making yourself

Every new Essex dog begins with the free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. Our trainers meet you and your dog, run a temperament test, then keep the dog for a few supervised hours in a group to see where it fits. That first morning is the drive to make in person: you see the building, meet the handlers and hand over the paperwork. After that the van can do the driving.

Send the new customer form first so the file is open when you arrive. Bring the Essex license and the vaccination records for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella, and use FIRST15 for 15 percent off the first daycare visit. Dogs booked only for grooming skip all of this and go straight into the studio online or in the app. Cats book the same way, straight into the cat room.

Does the Pup Van really come out to Essex?

Yes. Essex is one of the four towns the Pup Van serves, with Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and the price is the same $10 each way. Tick it when you book, or ask the front desk to add it. We confirm the pick-up time for your street inside our drop-off and pick-up windows, and the van runs Route 133 both ways.

How long is the drive from Essex to Dogtown?

About 20 minutes as an estimate. Route 133 takes you east into West Gloucester, Route 128 carries you to its end at the rotaries, and 210 Eastern Ave is a short run beyond them toward Rockport. Summer weekend traffic on both roads can add time, which is one reason Essex families like the van.

Can Essex dogs go to the beach in summer?

Not in June, July or August, at the time of writing: Essex closes its beaches and Centennial Grove to dogs for those three months. The rest of the year the town has no leash law. The town's Dog Licenses and Information page is the current source, so check it before you go, and Crane Beach in Ipswich opens to leashed dogs on October 1.

My Essex dog only needs a bath after the marsh. Do we need an evaluation?

No. Grooming is the one Dogtown service with no evaluation: book a bath ($55 to $95 by size) or a full-service groom ($75 to $120) online, in the app or by phone and bring the dog in. If you want the Pup Van to collect a grooming-only dog, ask the front desk whether the route that day allows it.

Do you walk dogs in Essex?

Ask us. At-home walks of 20, 30 or 60 minutes ($25, $35 and $55) are led by Dogtown staff, with a photo and a note after each one, and availability depends on the address and the season. Send your street and the days you need through the contact form; where we cannot cover a street, daycare with the Pup Van is the usual alternative.
