Dogtown for Topsfield, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Topsfield is a fairground town with a great deal of state and Audubon land on its doorstep, and its dog owners split their walks between places that welcome dogs and places that do not. This page sorts those out, gives the town's license dates and leash rules, and sets out what Dogtown offers a Topsfield dog 35 minutes away.

Where dogs can walk
Bradley Palmer welcomes dogs; the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary does not
Bradley Palmer State Park, at 40 Asbury Street, is the big dog-friendly walk in town: a 721-acre former estate of pine-needle paths and meadows, open sunrise to sunset, which DCR marks as dogs allowed. Expect horses and mountain bikes on the same Bradley Palmer trails. Daily parking fees apply from May 23 through October 12 in 2026, $5 for a Massachusetts plate, and hunting is allowed at Cleveland Farm, with archery only at Prospect Hill, so dress your dog and yourself in something bright in the fall.
Mass Audubon's Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary at 87 Perkins Row is the opposite case. It covers close to 2,000 acres with about 12 miles of trail, and its property rules prohibit dog walking and ask visitors to leave pets at home, service animals excepted. Its trails open dawn to dusk, Tuesday to Sunday and on Monday holidays, with adult admission of $7 for non-members.
Smaller and quieter, Essex County Greenbelt's Donibristle Reservation at Hill Street and Rowley Bridge Road has 0.9 mile of trail on 44 acres and lists dog walking among its uses. Greenbelt asks dog owners to carry a leash, leash any aggressive dog and carry out the waste, which is a good standard anywhere in town. Greenbelt's directions for parking are to pull into the driveway and park on the side of the road.

Town rules
Topsfield licenses are due January 31, and the town's leash rule works by order
Topsfield dogs six months and older are licensed every year by January 31 at the Town Clerk's office, Town Hall, 8 West Common Street. It costs $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact one, and from February 1 a $25 late fee is added per dog, with the Animal Control Officer able to ticket unlicensed dogs on top. A dog that arrives in town after January 1 has 30 days to be registered. Renew online, by mail with the form from the town census, through the secure mail slot at Town Hall, or in person Monday to Thursday 8 AM to 4 PM and Friday 8 AM to noon.
Topsfield's dog bylaw, Chapter 111, does not set a town-wide leash requirement at the time of writing. It lets the Animal Control Officer require owners to keep dogs from running at large in schools, school playgrounds, parks and public recreational areas, and to restrain a dog that is a nuisance or dangerous; fines are $25 for a first offense and $50 after that. Town parks keep their own calendar under the park regulations: closed for the season from about mid-November, and open 7 AM to 8 PM, or until sunset if earlier, while in season.
- License deadline: January 31, with a $25 late fee per dog from February 1
- Fee: $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact
- New dogs: register within 30 days of arriving
- Town parks: closed from about mid-November; 7 AM to 8 PM or sunset in season
What we offer
Academy days and training for the Topsfield dog with energy to spare
A dog who covers Bradley Palmer's meadows on weekends may need more than a playgroup on weekdays. Dogtown Academy is structured daycare with a trainer: training, enrichment, fitness, play and one-on-one time every day, plus a report card. A full day is $89 and a half day $69, and packs bring the cost down to $415 for five full days or $785 for ten. The sensory garden and scent games give a hound or a herding dog something to think about as well as somewhere to run.
For a specific problem, training sessions start from $94, and Dogtown's programs are fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement. The one-week Foundation board and train covers leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control and household manners, with daily updates and a go-home lesson; the two-week Advanced adds distraction proofing and real-world outings. We quote board and train after a short assessment.
Plain daycare, at $42 a full day or $33 a half day, suits a dog who mainly wants company, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. Overnight suites at $78 a night cover trips away, and grooming, from a $55 bath, can be booked on its own with no evaluation. Ask us whether at-home walks reach your Topsfield street.

- Academy packs: five full days $415, ten $785
- Training sessions from $94; board and train quoted after an assessment

Getting here
Route 97 to Route 128: about 35 minutes from Topsfield to Eastern Ave
From Topsfield Common, take Route 97 south to meet Route 128, then follow 128 north all the way to its end in Gloucester and continue on Eastern Avenue (Route 127) for about a mile to number 210. That is about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Leaving after the worst of the morning traffic helps, and the drop-off window runs until 9:30 AM on weekdays.
Topsfield is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up, because the van's published price, $10 each way, covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and for addresses beyond those four the front desk gives pricing and availability on request. Driving yourself, only the evaluation has to happen on a weekday; daycare also runs on Saturdays, with drop-off from 8 to 10 AM.
