Dogtown for Andover, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training

Andover is one of the farthest towns we write for, on the Merrimack Valley side of Essex County. A program that needs only a handful of trips is the honest fit, so this page centers on board and train, then covers the routes, Andover's license and leash rules, and how to use the Ward Reservation once your dog is home.

Who should drive

Make the Andover drive for a program with a start and a finish, not for a play day

Here is the plain arithmetic. A daycare day from Andover is two round trips of nearly two hours each, by our estimate, which is more time in the car than many dogs would want before and after a day of play. Closer daycares exist for exactly that reason, and for a routine play day we would point you to one. The trip to Eastern Ave earns its time when there is a specific job: a dog to train, a cat to groom, or a structured day that a playgroup cannot give.

Board and train is the clearest example. The dog stays with us for one or two weeks, training happens every day inside the routine of the building, and you drive only to drop off, to collect and for the go-home lessons. Cat grooming is the second: one appointment in a quiet studio, booked online with no evaluation, from $45 to $120. The third is an occasional Dogtown Academy day at $89, useful as a tune-up between training blocks.

  • Daily daycare from Andover: nearly four hours of driving a day, by our estimate
  • Board and train: one drop-off, one collection, plus the go-home lessons
  • Cat grooming: one trip, no evaluation, $45 to $120
  • Academy tune-up days: $89 full, $69 half

Advanced, two weeks

The two-week Advanced stay is built for the Andover adolescent who listens at home and nowhere else

Advanced covers everything in the one-week Foundation program, obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control and household manners, then adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality around other dogs and people, confidence building and structured socialization. It finishes with two scheduled go-home coaching lessons on top of the daily updates. All of it is fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement and clear communication rather than pressure.

That combination suits the adolescent who has the basics in the kitchen but loses them on a busy trail. Programs are listed without prices, because each plan is tailored; we quote after a short assessment, and training sessions start from $94. Send the training enquiry through the contact form and we reply within one hour on business days. Details that depend on your dog, such as its age and vaccines, are confirmed in that first conversation.

The routes

I-93 to Route 128 is the highway way from Andover; Route 133 east is the country road

The highway route takes I-93 south to its interchange with I-95 and Route 128 in Reading, then 128 north through Wakefield and Lynnfield. In Peabody, I-95 splits off toward New Hampshire; keep to Route 128 through Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea until it ends in Gloucester, then follow Eastern Avenue to number 210. Outside rush hour, call it about 55 minutes, by our estimate.

Route 133 leaves Andover through Shawsheen Village into North Andover, then runs east through West Boxford, Georgetown, Rowley, Ipswich and Essex before meeting Route 128 in Gloucester. It is the slower road, with several town centers, but it avoids the busiest miles of the highway. Andover is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 fare is reserved for the four Cape Ann towns on its route.

Andover rules

Andover licenses by the calendar year, adds $5 a month after March 1, and leashes dogs on conservation land

The Andover Town Clerk licenses dogs for the calendar year, January 1 to December 31: $13 for a spayed or neutered dog and $14 for an intact dog, with a copy of the current rabies certificate. A dog not licensed by March 1 incurs a $5 late fee for each month it stays unlicensed, though new dogs are not charged late fees. Online renewals for 2026 opened on December 13, and a household with more than four dogs needs a kennel license.

On Andover's conservation land, the Conservation Commission's rules, adopted December 20, 2022, allow dogs on leash only, require waste to be picked up, and open the land from sunrise to sunset. The town's waste bylaw sets fines of $75, $100 and $150 for a first, second and third offense in a calendar year. For off-leash play, the Andover Dog Park at 302 High Plain Road is open from sunrise to sunset.

  • License: $13 spayed or neutered, $14 intact; January 1 to December 31
  • Late fee: $5 a month for a dog still unlicensed after March 1
  • Conservation land: leash only, sunrise to sunset (rules adopted December 20, 2022)
  • Andover Dog Park, 302 High Plain Road: sunrise to sunset

Ward Reservation

Ward Reservation is the place to practice on leash, with bow hunting from the first Monday in October

The Trustees' Charles W. Ward Reservation in Andover covers 704 acres with almost 15 miles of trail, and dogs are welcome on leash. Holt Hill, at 420 feet the highest point in Essex County, carries the Solstice Stones, and a short boardwalk crosses the quaking bog at Pine Hole Pond. It is open daily from 7 AM to sunset; members park free and nonmembers pay a parking fee at 65 Prospect Road.

In fall, check the calendar before you go. The Trustees allow authorized seasonal bow hunting on the reservation from the first Monday in October through December, Monday to Saturday, from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Sunday is the one day of the week with no hunting. Bring the go-home lesson cues with you: a loose leash on the climb, a sit at each trail junction and a settle at the top while other walkers pass.

  • Ward Reservation: dogs on leash, 7 AM to sunset
  • Bow hunting: first Monday in October through December, Monday to Saturday
  • No hunting on Sundays
  • Parking at 65 Prospect Road; fee for nonmembers

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is Dogtown realistic for an Andover dog's regular daycare?
Not usually. At about 55 minutes each way outside rush hour, by our estimate, a daycare day means nearly four hours of driving, and Andover has closer choices for routine play. The trip makes sense for board and train, cat grooming or an occasional Dogtown Academy day, because each one delivers a lot from very few drives.
What is the difference between Foundation and Advanced board and train?
Foundation is one week for puppies, young dogs and basic manners: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced is two weeks for adolescents and real-world reliability, adding distraction proofing, outings, neutrality, confidence and structured socialization, plus two scheduled go-home coaching lessons. Each ends with a go-home lesson, with daily updates throughout.
How much is an Andover dog license?
It is $13 for a spayed or neutered dog and $14 for an intact dog, for the calendar year. The Town Clerk adds a $5 late fee for each month a dog stays unlicensed after March 1, with new dogs exempt, and needs a copy of the current rabies certificate. We ask for a current license at the free evaluation before daycare, Academy or overnight stays.
When is hunting season at the Ward Reservation?
The Trustees allow authorized bow hunting at the Ward Reservation from the first Monday in October through December, Monday through Saturday, from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. There is no hunting on Sundays. Dogs are allowed on leash all year, and bright colors in the fall are sensible for you and your dog.
Does the Pup Van come to Andover?
No. Andover is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van runs only in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, at $10 each way. For a board-and-train stay the drive happens only a few times, which is one reason that program fits Andover families better than daily care does.
