Dogtown for Ipswich, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Ipswich has some of the best sand on the North Shore and a dog season on it that lasts only half the year: Crane Beach takes dogs from October 1 to March 31, and Pavilion Beach is closed to animals from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Here is the drive, the Ipswich rules as we found them in October 2026, and how Ipswich families fit Dogtown around them.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 133 east through Essex, then Route 128 from Exit 53 to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Ipswich Town Clerk, Town Hall, 25 Green Street: $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact; calendar-year license due by March 31, then $10 for each month late (ipswichma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Crane Beach (The Trustees): dogs October 1 to March 31 only, $5 per nonmember dog, below the high tide line; Pavilion Beach: no animals Memorial Day to Labor Day (thetrustees.org, ipswichma.gov)
- A trail we know
- Turkey Hill Conservation Area, 31 Pineswamp Road: a one-mile wooded loop on town land, where dogs must be leashed at all times (ipswichma.gov)

The drive
Route 133 through Essex, then Route 128: about 30 minutes to Eastern Ave
From the center of Ipswich, Route 133 heads east out of town, runs through Essex past the head of the Essex River, and crosses Route 128 in West Gloucester at Exit 53. Take 128 toward its end at the rotaries, and Eastern Avenue is a couple of minutes beyond; 210 Eastern Ave sits on the Rockport side. The whole run is about 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Summer weekends through Essex center are the slow part, so build in extra time from June to August.
Ipswich sits outside the four Pup Van towns. The van's set price of $10 each way covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; for an Ipswich street, ask us about pick-up and the front desk will tell you whether that day's route can reach you and what it would cost. If you drive, half an hour each way favors full days over half days: drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, collect between 4 and 6:30 PM, and the full-day 10-pack at $380 brings each day to $38.
- Route 133 east through Essex, Route 128 from Exit 53 to its end, then Eastern Avenue
- About 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- Pup Van: Ipswich is outside the four van towns, so ask us about pick-up
- Weekday windows: 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM, 4 to 6:30 PM
The Ipswich dog calendar
Crane Beach takes dogs October 1 to March 31, and Pavilion Beach closes to animals all summer
Crane Beach is the Ipswich dog beach, and its season belongs to The Trustees, who own it. At the time of writing, dogs are allowed from October 1 to March 31 and not at all from April 1 to September 30. Member dogs are free and nonmember dogs pay $5 each. The Trustees' winter handout adds the details that matter on the sand: dogs stay below the high tide line except to get on and off the beach, never go on the dunes, the trails or Castle Hill, and come two per person at most.
The leash rule at Crane is drawn on a map. Inside the marked no-leash zone, a dog must stay in sight, close enough to answer a voice command, and must not approach other visitors unless invited. Everywhere else, including the parking area and the boardwalks, the dog wears a leash of six feet or less. The Trustees may require leashes everywhere if conditions warrant, so read the handout at the gate each winter.
Pavilion Beach, the town beach near Great Neck Park, posts its own rule: no animals on the beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Away from the water, the town says dogs are welcome on the trails of town-owned open space but must be leashed at all times, with the waste picked up and carried out. Turkey Hill Conservation Area at 31 Pineswamp Road is a good example: a one-mile wooded loop up to one of the highest undeveloped hilltops in Ipswich.
- Crane Beach: dogs October 1 to March 31 only; $5 per nonmember dog
- Crane: below the high tide line, off the dunes and trails, never at Castle Hill
- Pavilion Beach: no animals from Memorial Day to Labor Day
- Town-owned trails such as Turkey Hill: dogs leashed at all times
Licensing
Ipswich licenses follow the calendar year and are due by March 31
The Ipswich Town Clerk registers dogs for the calendar year, January 1 to December 31, and every dog six months or older must be licensed no later than March 31. At the time of writing the fee is $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact dog, with a reduced fee for the first dog of an owner aged 70 or over. After March 31 the town adds a late fee of $10 for each month or part of a month, so the cost of waiting grows every few weeks.
The clerk takes registrations online, by mail or in person at Town Hall, 25 Green Street, and asks for a current rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter for new dogs and renewals alike. Bring the same rabies paperwork and the current Ipswich license to your dog's evaluation at Dogtown, along with the DHPP and Bordetella records. We ask for the license from the town where your dog lives, not a Gloucester one, and a dog joins a playgroup only once both are on file.
What Ipswich books
Daycare while Crane is closed, a bath when it reopens, and training in between
The six months when Crane is closed to dogs are when Ipswich daycare days earn their keep. A full day is $42 and a half day $33, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard and the indoor floors. Dogtown Academy, at $89 a full day, adds a training session and one-on-one trainer time for the adolescent who needs a job as much as a run.
From October the pattern flips: Crane mornings, then a bath. Salt and sand work deep into a double coat, and a bath at Dogtown runs $55 to $95 by size with no evaluation needed; a full-service groom is $75 to $120, and Shed Release adds $10. Overnight suites are $78 a night with playgroups by day, and the Classic and Deluxe bundles add $10 or $15 a night. Training sessions start from $94, and a one-week Foundation or two-week Advanced board and train suits a family that cannot make twice-weekly drives.
Starting out
One weekday morning in Gloucester gets an Ipswich dog started
The free evaluation runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment: a temperament test with our team, then a few supervised hours in a group so we can see where your dog fits. Plan the first trip for the early end of the window and leave a few minutes for the desk. Send the new customer form before you come, and enter FIRST15 when you book to take 15 percent off the first daycare visit.
Grooming is the exception to all of this. A bath or a full groom books straight in, online or in the Dogtown app, with no evaluation. Ipswich cats are welcome too: the cat room is a quiet studio away from the dog floors, with a Full Bath at $95 and Minimal Trims at $45, and a cat that cannot be groomed safely is referred to a vet rather than pushed through.
