Dogtown for Wakefield, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training
Wakefield has Lake Quannapowitt, a town dog park and Breakheart along the Saugus line, and it has closer daycare options than Gloucester. What it also has is Route 128 running through town, which makes Eastern Ave easier to reach than the map suggests. This page covers that drive, the services that make it worthwhile, and the Wakefield rules worth knowing.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 128 north from the Wakefield interchanges through Lynnfield, staying on 128 at the I-95 split in Peabody, to its end in Gloucester and Eastern Avenue; about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street: $10 spayed or neutered, $20 intact; the clerk's application and town code chapter 104 give different late fees and start dates, so confirm with the clerk (wakefieldma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Lake Quannapowitt: swimming not recommended, and the Board of Health posts the lake during summer algae blooms (Friends of Lake Quannapowitt); at Breakheart (DCR), pets are kept off designated swimming areas May 1 to September 15 unless posted (302 CMR 12.13)
- A trail we know
- Breakheart Reservation (DCR, Saugus and Wakefield): dogs on a leash of 10 feet or less unless posted otherwise (302 CMR 12.13)

One road
From Wakefield, Route 128 north does almost all the work: about 40 minutes
Route 128 runs through Wakefield together with I-95, with interchanges at North Avenue, Route 129 and Salem Street, so most of the town is a few minutes from an on-ramp. Head north through Lynnfield to Peabody, where I-95 peels off toward New Hampshire, and stay on Route 128 through Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea to its end in Gloucester. Eastern Avenue brings you to number 210 shortly after. Outside rush hour that is about 40 minutes, by our estimate.
Wakefield is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van charges $10 each way only within its four Cape Ann towns. For an overnight stay the drive happens twice, once in and once out, and Sunday keeps two windows for overnight guests, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, so a weekend trip can end without a Monday-morning detour. Weekday windows run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM.
- Wakefield interchanges at North Avenue, Route 129 and Salem Street
- Stay on Route 128 when I-95 splits in Peabody
- About 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- Sunday windows for overnight guests: 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM
Worth the trip
An overnight stay with a groom before pick-up is the Wakefield trip that pays for itself
A suite at Dogtown is $78 a night. Your dog spends the day in a matched playgroup and the night in its suite, with 24/7 monitoring. The Dogtown Classic adds $10 a night for a daily homemade pupsicle or puppy cup and 10 percent off grooming; the Deluxe adds $15 for a stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, an orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming. Book a bath or full groom for the last day and your dog comes home clean.
That last part matters for the drive. Grooming is on site and can be scheduled during a stay, so one trip back down Route 128 brings home a rested, washed dog instead of a dog who needs a separate appointment. Baths run $55 to $95 by size and full-service grooms $75 to $120. If your household has a cat, the cat studio grooms in a quiet room away from the dogs, from $20 for a nail trim to $120 for Full Service, with no evaluation needed.

Straight talk
For weekday daycare, Wakefield has nearer choices, and we would use them too
Daycare at Dogtown is $42 a full day and $33 a half day, in groups of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. Even with Route 128 on your doorstep, a daycare day is a drop-off and a pick-up, two round trips of about 80 minutes each by our estimate. For a dog who goes three days a week, a closer daycare gives your dog more time at home and gives you your evenings back. We would rather lose that booking than have your dog spend its week in the car.
Where the distance stops mattering is a program you book once. Force-free board and train means a week or two of daily training with one drop-off and one collection; ask us for the price after a short assessment. Dogtown Academy, at $89 a full day, is worth an occasional trip for a dog who needs structure more than another round of play. Training enquiries sent through the contact form get a reply within one hour on business days.
Wakefield dog life
Wakefield licenses cost $10 or $20, the late fee is a question for the clerk, and Lake Quannapowitt is posted in summer
Wakefield licenses dogs through the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street. A spayed or neutered dog costs $10 to license and an intact dog $20. The late fee is less clear: the clerk's application and Chapter 104 of the town code give different amounts and different start dates, so ask the Town Clerk's office at 781-246-6383 before you count on either, and license early in the year. Pay by card or cash in the office, or by check to the Town of Wakefield, and include the rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter unless the town already has them. Bring the current license to your Dogtown evaluation.
Lake Quannapowitt is the town's walk, not its swim. The Friends of Lake Quannapowitt say swimming is not recommended, that summer algae blooms lead the Board of Health to post the lake, and that a pet who touches a bloom should be rinsed off immediately, since blooms can produce toxins that make people and pets sick. Through the summer, keep your dog out of any green scum along the edge.
For woods, Breakheart Reservation runs along the Saugus line, 652 acres in both towns managed by the state's Department of Conservation and Recreation. DCR requires a leash of ten feet or less unless an area is posted otherwise, and keeps pets off designated swimming areas from May 1 through September 15. The town's Park Division also lists the Peter May Dog Park on Main Street.
- License: $10 spayed or neutered, $20 intact; ask the clerk about the late fee
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street
- Lake Quannapowitt: swimming not recommended; posted during summer algae blooms
- Breakheart (DCR): 10-foot leash; no pets in swimming areas May 1 to September 15
Starting out
Book the evaluation well before the trip, then reserve the first stay
Every dog new to Dogtown starts with the free evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a group. It is required before overnight stays, daycare, Academy days and walks, and not before grooming. For a Wakefield family planning a trip, book the evaluation well before the travel dates so the stay is not waiting on it.
If you want your dog to try a full day in a group before its first night away, the code FIRST15 takes 15 percent off that first daycare visit. After that, bookings, report cards and messages to the front desk all run through the Dogtown app, so the second trip from Wakefield needs only a few taps and a drive up Route 128.
