Dogtown for Amesbury, MA dog owners: daycare, boarding, grooming and training

From Amesbury, Eastern Ave is about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and we would rather say so up front. This page covers the drive, Amesbury's six-foot leash rule and March 31 license deadline, Lake Gardner's summer dog ban, and the Dogtown services that work when Gloucester is a weekly trip rather than a daily one.

The honest distance

From Amesbury, plan on stays, programs and paired appointments rather than daily drop-offs

From Amesbury, head south on Route 1 through Newburyport into Newbury, pick up Route 1A south through Rowley to Ipswich, then turn east on Route 133 through Essex to Route 128 in West Gloucester. Take 128 to its end at the rotaries and follow Eastern Avenue to number 210. That is about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Interstate 95 south to Route 128 is all highway but longer in miles, at about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.

Amesbury is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way price applies only in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and the front desk will tell you whether an Amesbury address can ever be reached and what it would cost. Daily drop-offs and pick-ups from that distance are more than most families can keep up, so we would rather help you plan visits that each do several jobs than sell you a daycare pack you cannot use.

  • Route 1 to Newbury, Route 1A to Ipswich, Route 133 through Essex, then Route 128
  • About 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
  • I-95 and Route 128: all highway, about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
  • Pup Van: outside the four van towns, so ask us about pick-up

Amesbury rules

A leash no longer than six feet off your property, and a license by March 31

The animal control by-laws Amesbury links from its Animal Control page, a 1990 recompilation with revisions through 2006, require a dog off its owner's premises to be restrained by a chain or leash no longer than six feet, unless it is on someone else's land with their permission. No dog may roam the public highway. Fines are $10 for a first offense within a year and $25 after that, and owners must pick up waste on sidewalks, streets and parks and carry something to do it with.

Licenses come from the City Clerk's office; the city's dog license page and the clerk's contact page give it different street addresses, so phone 978-388-8100 before you go or mail anything. Every dog six months and older must be licensed by March 31 each year; at the time of writing the fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for an unaltered one, with a $5 late fee per dog after the deadline. Proof of rabies vaccination and of spay or neuter goes with the application, which you can complete online, in person or by mail.

  • Chain or leash of six feet or less off your own property
  • Fines: $10 for a first offense in a year, then $25
  • License by March 31: $10 spayed or neutered, $15 unaltered
  • A $5 late fee per dog after March 31

Lake Gardner and Whittier Hill

Lake Gardner's beach closes to dogs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day

At the time of writing, the city's Lake Gardner page, citing the Amesbury Health Department, says dogs are not allowed on the beach from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Dogs must be leashed at all times on the trails there, and on the beach in the off-season, and the park is open from dawn to dusk unless posted otherwise. A summer swim for an Amesbury dog has to happen somewhere else, and our splash pools are one answer.

For a hill walk, Essex County Greenbelt's Whittier Hill Reservation climbs a steep 0.6-mile loop under tall hardwoods to views over Woodsom Farm and Lake Gardner; park on Whitcher Court. Greenbelt welcomes dogs unless a property page says otherwise, asks you to have a leash with you and use it on any dog that might be aggressive, to carry the waste out, and closes every property at sunset. The Amesbury Town Forest off Kimball Road, owned and managed by the city, adds 5.2 miles of marked trail.

What Amesbury books

Overnight stays, board and train, and a groom on the same day as daycare

The bookings that suit Amesbury are the ones with one drive in and one drive home. Overnight suites are $78 a night: playgroups of 7 to 10 by day, a quiet suite and 24/7 monitoring at night. The Deluxe bundle adds $15 a night for a stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, an orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming. Board and train runs one week (Foundation) or two (Advanced), with daily updates and go-home lessons, quoted after a short assessment; training sessions start from $94.

When you do come for a single day, make it do two things. Grooming can be booked during a daycare day, so a $42 full day and a bath from $55 share one round trip, and the dog goes home tired and clean. Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether your Amesbury address is covered before you choose a program. Amesbury cats can come too: the cat studio offers a Full Bath at $95, Minimal Trims at $45 and nail clipping at $20.

Starting out

Make the first trip the evaluation, then let each visit do more than one job

The free evaluation is a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. From Amesbury, a start before 6 AM puts you at Eastern Ave near the opening of the window, or you can aim for the later part of it. The evaluation opens daycare, Academy days, overnight stays and walks; grooming books straight in without it.

We publish stories about Dogtown dogs from Amesbury only with the family's written permission, so ask the front desk if you would like to hear how Amesbury dogs settle in. An Amesbury family new to us can use FIRST15 for 15 percent off the first daycare visit, and every visit ends with a report card in the Dogtown app.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is Dogtown too far from Amesbury for daycare?
For daily daycare, probably yes: the drive is about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, in each direction. Amesbury families get more from overnight stays, board and train, and single days that pair daycare with a groom. If your work takes you toward Cape Ann anyway, regular days can still fit.
Does the Pup Van come to Amesbury?
Amesbury is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up. Amesbury is not one of the four towns covered by the $10 each-way van price. Send your street and the dates you need, and the front desk will tell you plainly whether it is possible and what it would cost.
Can my dog go on the Lake Gardner beach?
Not from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, at the time of writing; the city's Lake Gardner page says dogs are not allowed on the beach in that period, citing the Amesbury Health Department. Outside it, dogs may use the beach on a leash, and they must be leashed on the trails all year. The park is open dawn to dusk.
What leash does Amesbury require?
The by-laws linked from the city's Animal Control page require a chain or leash no longer than six feet whenever your dog is off your own property, unless it is on another person's land with permission. Fines are $10 for a first offense within a year and $25 after that, and you must pick up waste in public places.
When is the Amesbury dog license due?
By March 31 each year, for every dog six months and older. At the time of writing the fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for an unaltered dog, with a $5 late fee after the deadline. Bring the current license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records to the free evaluation.
