Board and train for Andover, MA dog owners

Andover sits on the far side of Essex County from Cape Ann, and the drive is real. A stay can still make sense, because the training happens without you on the road each week. Below: the drive, Andover's six-foot leash bylaw and its one off-leash exception, the license calendar, the Ward Reservation for practice, and the follow-up.

Worth the drive?

From Andover, a stay earns its drive when you want trained skills without a weekly round trip to Gloucester

A weekly class at our building would cost an Andover family close to two hours in the car each time, by our estimate, before any training happened. A board and train flips that arithmetic: you drive to Eastern Ave to start, again to collect, and for the coaching, and in between your dog trains every day. Foundation, one week, suits puppies and young dogs who need basic obedience, leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, suits adolescents who know the basics at home but lose them in public.

The method is the other reason. Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, brings a B.S. in Biochemistry and more than ten years of hands-on work with behaviorally complex dogs, and every program here is fear- and force-free. Your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, joins a matched playgroup by day when that suits it, and gets enrichment between sessions. If a weekly class near home fits your family better, that is a sound choice, and we will tell you so.

The route

Route 125 and Route 114 lead east from Andover to Route 128, about 55 minutes from our door, by our estimate

From Andover center, take Route 125 north into North Andover and turn east on Route 114, which runs through Middleton and Danvers to Route 128. Follow 128 north to where it ends in Gloucester, then Eastern Avenue to number 210: about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From the south side of town, I-93 south to Route 128 north keeps you on highway the whole way, with more miles. Either way, the weekday evaluation window of 6:30 to 9:30 AM means an early start.

The Pup Van's routes end well short of Andover. The Haverhill Line stops at Andover and Ballardvale, and the MBTA rider rules allow a larger dog that does not fit in a carrier only off-peak, on a leash, and never on the seats; staff can also restrict pets when trains are crowded. Andover to North Station and on to Gloucester on the Rockport Line is a long day for a dog, so for most families the car is the simpler trip.

  • Route 125 north, Route 114 east, Route 128 north: about 55 minutes
  • I-93 south to Route 128: highway all the way, more miles
  • Evaluation: weekdays, 6:30 to 9:30 AM
  • Pup Van: not in Andover, so ask about pick-up

Ward and the dog park

The Ward Reservation is Andover's leashed classroom, and the town dog park is the one place the bylaw counts a loose dog as restrained

The Trustees' Charles W. Ward Reservation, entered at 65 Prospect Road, has 704 acres and almost 15 miles of trail, some of it part of the Bay Circuit Trail. Dogs walk on leash; the property opens at 7 AM and closes at sunset, members park free and nonmembers pay a parking fee. A short walk from the lot, a boardwalk crosses the quaking bog at Pine Hole Pond, and the accessible trail there runs about a quarter mile out and back: a narrow wooden surface that tests a heel position well. Holt Hill, at 420 feet the highest point in Essex County, is the longer climb.

The Trustees authorize bow hunting at Ward from the first Monday in October through December, Monday to Saturday, from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, with no hunting on Sundays. The Andover Dog Park at 302 High Plain Road is the other named spot: under section 11 of the town's dog bylaw, a dog inside the town-designated dog park, under the direct and immediate supervision of a responsible adult, counts as properly restrained. Save it until the recall is steady on a leash elsewhere, since a dog park is a hard room to rehearse a new cue in.

Bylaw and license

Andover's bylaw asks for a leash no longer than six feet, held firmly, and licenses cost $13 or $14 a calendar year

Article XII, section 11 of Andover's bylaws says a dog outside its owner's premises must be held firmly on a leash no greater than six feet long by a person who has it under control. Owners must also remove waste from public areas and from other people's property, and must carry a means of removal on sidewalks, streets and in parks. Violations of the dog bylaw cost $75 for a first offense, $100 for a second and $150 for a third within one calendar year. Spring Grove Cemetery admits dogs under restraint, subject to the same waste rule.

Conservation land adds its own regulations, adopted by the Conservation Commission on December 20, 2022: the land is open from sunrise to sunset, dogs are allowed on leash only, and their waste must be cleaned up, with a warning for a first violation and $100 for each one after. Licenses come from the Town Clerk for the calendar year: $13 for a spayed or neutered dog and $14 for an intact one, with a copy of the current rabies certificate. A dog still unlicensed after March 1 adds a $5 late fee for each month, though new dogs are not charged late fees.

  • Leash no greater than six feet, held firmly, off your premises
  • Dog bylaw fines: $75, $100, then $150 in one calendar year
  • Conservation land: leash only, sunrise to sunset
  • License: $13 or $14; $5 a month late after March 1

After Gloucester

Coaching closes the stay, and Andover families keep going with private sessions, Canine Campus or Academy days

Foundation ends with a go-home lesson at pick-up; Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons. Because each visit means close to an hour's drive each way, set both Advanced dates when you book and bring whoever will hold the leash at Ward. The daily updates during the stay are your preparation, so by pick-up you know which cues your dog has and how they were rewarded.

Home visits in Andover are not on our published menu; ask the front desk. Private sessions at Eastern Ave start from $94 if a skill needs polishing, Canine Campus offers two, four or six weeks of training days with your dog home each night, and a Dogtown Academy full day costs $89 with a training session built in. Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether Andover can be covered before you plan around it. Our board and train page compares Foundation and Advanced in one place.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Should an Andover family choose Foundation or Advanced?
Choose by age and by where the problems show up. Foundation, one week, fits puppies and young dogs who need leash skills, place, stay, recall and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, fits adolescents whose manners fall apart on trails and sidewalks, adding distraction proofing, outings and neutrality. Gabby recommends one after a short assessment.
Can my dog run off leash anywhere in Andover after the stay?
Under the town bylaw, only inside the town-designated dog park at 302 High Plain Road, under the direct and immediate supervision of a responsible adult; the bylaw treats that as restraint. Everywhere else off your property, a leash of six feet or less held firmly is required, and conservation land and the Ward Reservation are leash-only as well.
What happens if I renew my Andover dog license late?
A dog still unlicensed after March 1 incurs a $5 late fee for each month it stays unlicensed, though new dogs are not charged late fees. The license runs January 1 to December 31 and costs $13 for a spayed or neutered dog or $14 for an intact dog, with a copy of the current rabies certificate.
Can we bring our dog to Gloucester on the Haverhill Line?
Possibly, off-peak. The Haverhill Line stops at Andover and Ballardvale, and the Rockport Line from North Station stops at Gloucester. The MBTA allows larger dogs that do not fit in a carrier only off-peak and on a leash, and staff may restrict pets when trains are crowded. The town sits outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up options when you enquire.
Will a trainer visit our Andover home after the stay?
Home visits are not on our published menu, so ask the front desk about your Andover address. The go-home lesson and the coaching lessons take place at our building on Eastern Ave, and private sessions there start from $94. Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether your Andover address can be covered if you want more structured training after the stay.
