Dogs at Good Harbor Beach: even days, October 1 to March 31

Good Harbor is the beach most Gloucester dogs learn first: a long, flat run of sand, a tidal creek and a footbridge, and a lot that empties out once the summer season ends. Here is how the even-day rule works, what a dog needs to do well there, and how a bath or a daycare day at Dogtown fits around it.

The rule

Even dates only, October 1 to March 31, then closed for plovers

Gloucester opens its public beaches to dogs from October 1 to April 30. Good Harbor carries two extra conditions. Dogs may come on even-numbered dates only, so the 2nd, the 4th, the 16th and so on, and the beach shuts to dogs a month early, on April 1, because piping plovers begin nesting above the tide line. That leaves a six-month window with about fifteen dog days in each month.

Odd dates belong to Wingaersheek, on the far side of the Annisquam River, which runs the opposite rule from October 1 to April 30. Between the two beaches a Gloucester dog has somewhere sandy to go every day of the off-season until Good Harbor closes. The odd and even pairing is the single most useful thing to remember about the city's dog beaches, and it is also the rule visitors most often get wrong.

These are the rules as posted at the time of writing, in fall 2026. Gloucester can change dates, add fees or post a closure after a storm, and plover fencing can widen a closed area with little notice. Read the city's beach information page before you go, and treat any sign at the footbridge as the final word. The Discover Gloucester summary is a readable second check.

What it asks of your dog

A recall that beats a flock of gulls, and a stomach that skips the salt water

Good Harbor is wide and open, and in the off-season it fills with other dogs, joggers, surfers walking to the break and gulls working the tide line. A dog that comes back on the first call gets the run of the beach. A dog that does not needs a long line until the recall holds. Gloucester's dog regulations expect you to have your dog under control, and the city's ordinance is where to confirm the current leash wording. Our trainers work recall on exactly this kind of open sand, because a beach is where a good recall breaks down first.

Leash manners matter at the footbridge and in the lot, where dogs bunch up. Salt water is the other test. Dogs that drink from the surf or chase waves can swallow enough to upset their stomach, and the tidal creek at the north end carries the same salt. Bring fresh water and offer it every fifteen minutes. Rinse sand and salt off paws and belly before the car ride home, because dried salt cracks pads and sand between the toes rubs raw by the next morning.

How Dogtown fits

Our grooming studio at 210 Eastern Ave is a few minutes' drive from the Good Harbor lot. A bath-only appointment starts at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds, $65 for 26 to 50 pounds, $75 for 51 to 90 pounds and $85 above that, with an extra-large long-haired coat at $95. Add Shed Release for $10 when the winter undercoat starts to loosen, or a nail clipping for $16. Grooming needs no evaluation; book it online or in the Dogtown app.

On an odd date, when Good Harbor is closed to dogs, a full daycare day at $42 or a half day at $33 gives a beach dog the same burn in a playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs on our turf yard. The Pup Van collects and returns dogs for $10 each way across Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Daycare begins with a free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license in hand.

Where Good Harbor dogs go on the other days

Wingaersheek is the obvious pairing and has its own page. Long Beach, a few minutes east along Thatcher Road, is split between Gloucester and Rockport, and the two halves follow different ordinances, so read that page before you assume the even-day rule carries over. Rockport's own beaches reopen to dogs after September 15, which makes them the early-fall alternative before Good Harbor opens on October 1.

For a dog who cannot yet be trusted off a line, the fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, off Hough Avenue, offers two acres of off-leash space with separate areas for small and large dogs. Can my dog go to Good Harbor Beach in April?
Not at the time of writing. Gloucester closes Good Harbor to dogs on April 1 for piping plover nesting, a month before the city's other beaches close on April 30. Wingaersheek stays open on odd dates through April, so April dog days move there. Confirm the current dates on the city's beach page, because plover fencing and the closure date can shift from one year to the next.
Does the even-day rule apply on weekends and holidays?
The rule is by date, not by day of the week. If Saturday falls on the 14th, Good Harbor is open to dogs; if it falls on the 15th, it is not, and Wingaersheek is. No holiday exception is listed at the time of writing. Check the city's beach information page for anything posted against a specific date before you load the car.
Does my dog need a leash at Good Harbor?
Gloucester's dog regulations set the control requirement, and the wording can change, so read the city's dog regulations page for the current rule rather than relying on what other owners do. Whatever the ordinance says, a dog that does not come back on the first call belongs on a long line, especially near the footbridge, the creek and the lot.
Should I bathe my dog after every Good Harbor visit?
Rinse paws and belly after every visit, and book a full bath when the coat smells of salt or the skin looks dry. Salt left in the coat dries the skin, and sand in the feet rubs pads raw. Our bath-only service is priced by size from $55, needs no evaluation, and can often be booked online for the same afternoon when the studio has room.
