Cape Ann dog calendar: June (Rockport beaches close, Fiesta week)
June is the month the sand goes quiet for dogs and the city gets loud: Fiesta week, the first heat, summer visitors and the closed beaches all arrive together, on Cape Ann and at 210 Eastern Ave.

Beaches this month: none, from June 1 until September
June 1 is the day the Cape Ann beach calendar empties. Rockport's summer ban runs June 1 to September 15 on Front, Back, Cape Hedge and Pebble; Essex closes its beaches and Centennial Grove to dogs through August; Gloucester, Singing Beach and Crane closed in the spring. Beverly posts hours at Lynch Park and Dane Street instead.
Where a dog can swim in June is the harder question. Quarries and ponds carry their own risks, from algae blooms to cold deep water, and our ponds and quarries page lists the ones to avoid. For most Cape Ann dogs the summer swim is a pool.

Rules and deadlines
Rules and deadlines: no fees due, but the leash rules do more work
No license deadline falls in June, but the leash rules do more work than usual. Gloucester's dog regulations are on the city's page, Rockport asks for a leash or direct voice control, and Essex has no leash law at all, which does not make a loose dog on Route 133 a good idea.
Summer residents arriving in June often ask what paperwork a visiting dog needs. Dogtown asks for a current city dog license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records at the free evaluation; if you are here for the season, call the front desk before you arrive.

June heat arrives with humidity off the water and pavement that warms faster than the air. The AVMA's heat guidance: walk early or late, test the pavement with the back of your hand, never leave a dog in a parked car, and know the signs of heatstroke, heavy panting, drooling, weakness and collapse. Flat-faced breeds struggle first.

St. Peter's Fiesta takes over downtown Gloucester in late June: the procession, the greasy pole, the seine boat races, concerts and fireworks over the harbor. It is a wonderful week for people and a hard one for most dogs; the short answer is daycare or an overnight stay for the loudest nights.
In June the turf yard's pools open and the homemade pupsicle, $6, becomes the add-on of the month. Daycare is $42 a full day and $33 a half, an overnight suite is $78 a night with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring, and the Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.
