Cape Ann dog calendar: July (the July 3 fireworks, heat, hot sand)
July on Cape Ann is fireworks, humidity and pavement you cannot stand on barefoot. There is no sand for dogs this month, so the calendar is about keeping cool, keeping calm on July 3, and keeping the routine going.

Beaches this month: closed everywhere, so the pool is the beach
Every town beach on Cape Ann is closed to dogs in July, at the time of writing. Gloucester's dog season does not resume until October 1, Rockport's ban runs to September 15, Essex reopens in September, Crane Beach on October 1 and Singing Beach on October 15. Beverly posts hours at Lynch Park and Dane Street; check before driving down Route 127.
A dog who lived on Good Harbor all winter still needs to swim. Home pools with a ramp work, and the two pools on Dogtown's turf yard run every warm day in July under a handler's eye. Skip the quarries; the algae and the ledges are on our ponds page.

Nothing is due at any town hall in July. The paperwork that matters is the tag on the collar: the night of July 3 is when dogs bolt from yards and open doors across Gloucester, and a current license tag and a microchip with your current phone number bring one home. Our lost-dog page lists animal control and the shelters to call.
Gloucester's leash ordinances apply on the Boulevard, at Stage Fort Park and on the downtown streets that fill for the Fourth, and a dog on a leash cannot run at the first rocket.

Cape Ann's July heat comes with humidity off the water, the combination dogs handle worst. The AVMA's heat guidance covers the signs of heatstroke and the rule for pavement: if the back of your hand cannot rest on it for seven seconds, the dog's pads cannot either. The Boulevard and the Eastern Ave sidewalk fail that test by late morning.
Flat-faced breeds, seniors, overweight dogs and thick double coats go downhill fastest. Rest breaks and water stations are part of every daycare day, and the indoor play floors are there for the hottest hours.

The Gloucester fireworks are on July 3, over the harbor, and neighborhood displays run for days either side. The AVMA's fireworks page says what our handlers say: a scared dog needs a closed room, white noise, a chew and a person, not a spot on the Boulevard. An overnight suite at $78 a night, away from the harbor, is the option for a dog who panics.
The rest of the month is pool season on the turf yard. Daycare is $42 a full day, $33 a half, and a frozen Kong at $6 or a homemade pupsicle at $6 turns a hot afternoon into a slow, cool one. Drop-off starts at 6:30 AM on weekdays, the coolest hour of the day.
