Fiesta week at Dogtown: how the building runs when the city parties
For one week a year Gloucester is loud, crowded and impossible to park in, and the fireworks go off over the harbor. Our dogs mostly sleep through it. This note is about how the building runs during Fiesta and what downtown families do with their dogs.
The week
Fiesta is late June: the city fills, and Eastern Ave stays a daycare
St. Peter's Fiesta runs over the last full weekend of June, with the greasy pole and the Sunday procession packed into the Fort and St. Peter's Square. It is the best week of the Gloucester year and the worst week to park downtown. Our lot on Eastern Ave stays open and the turf stays quiet.
The daycare day itself is a June day. Groups of 7 to 10 dogs rotate between the pools and platforms on the turf and the indoor floors when the sun is high, with water at every break. The posted windows apply unless the app says otherwise.

Fireworks
For a dog who hates the bangs, a suite is calmer than a downtown apartment
Fiesta's fireworks go off over the harbor, and the city's July 3 show follows a week later. A dog who trembles at the first bang has a hard fortnight near the Fort. Our suites sit farther from the water than a downtown apartment, with 24/7 monitoring, and a night here is one option for the loud evenings.
The AVMA's advice for fireworks is to keep a frightened dog indoors in a familiar, secure space with something to work on, and to make sure the tag and microchip details are current in case a dog bolts. A frozen Kong at $6 or a lick mat at $5 booked onto the stay gives a nervous dog a job while the sky is loud.

Getting here
The Pup Van and the early window beat the Fiesta traffic
Traffic is the real Fiesta problem for a dog owner. The streets around St. Peter's Square fill for the procession and the lots go early. The Pup Van collects and returns dogs for $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Fiesta week is when downtown families discover it.
If you drive, the windows help. The 6:30 to 9:30 AM drop-off is long before the day's events start, and the 4 to 6:30 PM pick-up lands before the evening crowd builds. Sunday is overnight guests only, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.

Heat
Late June is also the first real heat, so the pools do the work
Fiesta usually brings the first stretch of real heat, and the beaches are closed to dogs anyway: Gloucester's from May 1 through September 30, Rockport's from June 1 to September 15. The pools on the turf are the summer's answer, along with shade breaks indoors and water every rotation.
A half day at $33 suits a dog who fades in heat; the full day is $42. A homemade pupsicle at $6 is the add-on most families pick this week, and the treadmill at $10 gives a restless dog exercise out of the sun. The evaluation before a first daycare day runs weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM.
