St. Peter's Fiesta with a dog: crowds, the greasy pole and the fireworks

St. Peter's Fiesta is the festival Gloucester's Italian-American fishing families built around the feast of St. Peter, and it takes over the downtown waterfront for several days in late June. At the time of writing the program includes processions through the streets, music and food in St. Peter's Square, the greasy pole contests out in the harbor and a fireworks display over the water. The dates and the order of events shift each year, so check the Fiesta's own site before you plan around it.

The greasy pole draws the biggest shoreline crowds, packed onto the sand and the seawall to watch competitors run a greased pole out over the harbor. The processions bring marching bands, drums and church bells through narrow streets. About a week after the Fiesta fireworks, Gloucester's July 3 fireworks light the harbor again. For a dog, that is two loud nights, days of brass bands and no quiet route through downtown, in the hottest week of the year so far.

The simplest Fiesta plan is a daycare day. Drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday, enjoy the daytime events without a leash in your hand, and pick up between 4 and 6:30 PM, before the evening crowds peak. A full day costs $42 and a half day $33. While you watch the greasy pole, your dog is in a playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs on the turf yard with pools and shade, or on the indoor floors when the afternoon turns hot.

For the fireworks night, an overnight stay at $78 keeps your dog inside a monitored suite at 210 Eastern Ave, well away from the harbor. Add a frozen Kong for $6 or a lick mat for $5 to give an anxious dog something to work on at dusk. If you would rather not drive through Fiesta traffic, the Pup Van collects and returns dogs for $10 each way across Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
