Commuting to Boston with a dog at home: the Rockport line and the long day
Rockport to North Station is a long ride, and the dog's day is longer than yours: it starts when you leave for the early train and ends when you walk in at seven. This page takes that day apart hour by hour and matches the pieces to a walk, a daycare day or, on bad nights, a suite.
What changes
The dog's day is your commute plus your workday, in the dark for half the year
Door to door, a Cape Ann commuter is gone eleven or twelve hours. For the dog that means one bathroom break at six in the morning and the next at seven at night, a silent house from the moment the car leaves, and from November to February both walks in the dark. Adult dogs can hold a bladder that long; they should not have to every weekday. Puppies and seniors cannot, and for them a five-day commute needs help from the first week.
Boredom compounds. The first week alone is quiet; by the third the dog has found the trash, the blinds and the neighbor's cat through the window. The evening dog is frantic because the whole day's energy arrives at once, at the hour you have the least. What our handlers notice in commuter dogs is not misbehavior but flatness: a dog that has learned nothing happens between breakfast and dinner.

The plan
Hour by hour: the early train, the midday gap, the evening return
Six to seven: the walk before the train, then the dog left at home or dropped at Eastern Ave, where the weekday window opens at 6:30 AM. For a dog that copes alone, the plan is the midday gap. A 30-minute solo walk from home at $35 around noon splits the day into two halves a dog can manage, with a photo sent while you are at your desk; a 10-pack is $315. Availability depends on your address and the season, so ask first.
For a dog that does not cope alone, the plan is the daycare day. A full day is $42, the 10-pack $380, and at five days a week the unlimited membership at $700 a month is worth comparing. Drop-off runs 6:30 to 9:30 AM, pick-up 4 to 6:30 PM, and the Pup Van at $10 each way in the four towns covers the mornings the train leaves before you can. A late night in Boston is a suite at $78; call before the window closes. Hybrid dogs often need nothing from us on the home days.

Cape Ann specifics
The peak ban, the stations and the pick-up window that ends at 6:30
At the time of writing the MBTA's rider rules allow a leashed non-service dog on the Commuter Rail only off-peak and at the crew's discretion, never on a seat, and peak is 7 to 10 AM and 4 to 7 PM on weekdays. So the dog does not come with you; the Rockport line page covers the rare off-peak ride. The Cape Ann stops are Rockport, Gloucester and West Gloucester, then Manchester.
A winter commuter walks the dog in the dark at both ends; a reflective leash and the walk-in-the-dark how-to are worth more than they sound. From October 1 to April 30 Gloucester's beaches take dogs, Good Harbor on even days and Wingaersheek on odd, so a Saturday recovers what the week took. Tick season runs April to November, and a dog that spent noon in the woods with a walker gets checked at seven. When a nor'easter disrupts the line, a booked daycare day is a plan.

What not to do
Do not rely on the neighbor, leave a puppy for the day or try a peak train with the dog
The neighbor who said they would let the dog out is a plan until the first week they forget, and by then the dog has learned the house is where accidents happen. Do not leave a puppy or a senior for a full commuting day; the bladder is not built for it, and neither is the mind. Do not try a peak train with the dog; the crew will refuse it and the dog will have had a stressful morning for nothing.
Do not treat the crate as the plan; a crate is a bedroom, not an eleven-hour holding cell. Do not start the new job on Monday and book the evaluation on Wednesday; the slot you need is a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, the same hours you are on the train, so do it during a vacation week or a work-from-home day. And do not choose between daycare and a walk on price alone; choose by how the dog looks at seven.
