Midday walks fit the dog who is alone from the morning train to dinner

The classic Dogtown walking client leaves for the Rockport line early, gets home after six, and has a dog who is fine alone for a few hours but not for ten. A 30-minute walk at noon breaks the day in two, empties the bladder, and gives the dog something to think about besides the front door. The same goes for the household working from home that cannot step away between meetings, and for shift workers whose hours stretch past a dog's comfortable limit.

Midday walks also suit dogs who are not daycare dogs. A senior who would rather sniff the same three blocks than join a playgroup. A reactive or shy dog who does its best work one on one. A dog recovering from surgery who needs a short leash walk and nothing more. Because every Dogtown walk is solo, none of these dogs has to cope with another dog to get their exercise. On daycare days, the Pup Van collects instead for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

The visit

Your walker is a member of Dogtown staff, from the same team that runs our playgroups. They arrive in the window you set, let themselves in the way you arranged, leash your dog and go. The route is matched to your dog's age and fitness: a 20-minute walk is a purposeful loop with time to sniff, a 30-minute walk covers a neighborhood properly, and 60 minutes is a real outing, long enough from many Gloucester addresses to reach the water and come back.

Back at the house, the walker tops up the water, dries paws in wet weather, checks the door is locked and sends you a photo with a short note: where you went, what your dog did, anything you should know. On Cape Ann that note earns its keep between April and November, when a walk past long grass means a quick tick check before the dog goes back inside, and in July and August, when pavement heat decides the route and the pace.

Price

$25 for 20 minutes, $35 for 30, $55 for an hour, with packs for the regulars

Single walks are $25 for 20 minutes, $35 for 30 minutes and $55 for 60 minutes. If the walk becomes part of your dog's week, a 10-pack knocks the price of one walk off every ten: $225, $315 and $495 for the three lengths. A 30-pack goes further at $637, $892 and $1,402, roughly 15 percent under the single rate. Our dog walking packages page compares them in full.

Single walks are booked online through MoeGo or by calling the front desk once your dog has passed the free evaluation; the packs are sold in the Dogtown app. The evaluation is a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM by appointment, and it needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file plus a current city dog license. Gloucester licenses come from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog, and are late after April 30.

Our walkers go out from Eastern Ave, and how far they can reach depends on where you live and the time of year. Summer traffic on Cape Ann, when Route 128 backs up at the rotaries and the beach roads crawl, changes what a midday round can hold; so does a January nor'easter. Ask us whether we cover your address, and we will give you an honest answer for the season you are asking about.

Getting set up takes one visit to Dogtown. Book the free evaluation for a weekday morning, bring the vaccination records and license, and tell us about the house: alarm, gate, where the leash lives, which neighbor's dog to avoid. If your commute runs through the Gloucester station, the evaluation drop-off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM fits before the train.

What time counts as midday?

Most midday walks fall between late morning and mid-afternoon, and you set the window when you book. Tell the front desk how wide a window your dog can tolerate; a young dog with a small bladder needs a tighter one than an adult who is comfortable for six hours.

Do you walk dogs in the rain, snow or a heat wave?

Weather shapes the walk more often than it cancels it: a shorter loop and a good paw-dry on a raw November day, shade and a slower pace when the pavement is hot. Ask the front desk how storm days and heat advisories are handled when you set up the schedule so nothing surprises you. The AVMA's heat guidance is a sensible reference for what is too hot for a dog to walk.

Does my dog need an evaluation just for walks?

Yes. The free evaluation applies to daycare, Dogtown Academy, overnight stays and walks alike. It runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, includes a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, and needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file with a current city dog license. It lets the walker know your dog before the first solo outing.

Can the walker feed my dog or give medication?

Ask the front desk when you set up the schedule; it depends on what is needed and how often. Topping up water and drying paws are part of every visit. Is a midday walk enough exercise, or should my dog be in daycare?

For many adult dogs a 30-minute midday walk plus your own morning and evening walks is plenty. High-energy dogs and young dogs who need company as much as exercise often do better with two or three daycare days a week and walks on the others.
