The Rockport line with a dog: MBTA rules, off-peak hours and the daycare fix
The Rockport line is how much of Cape Ann gets to work, and a dog at home is how much of Cape Ann gets through the week. Here is what the MBTA allows, what a train asks of a dog, and the arrangement that works for commuters from Rockport, Gloucester and Manchester.
The rules
Dogs ride the Rockport line off-peak, leashed, on the floor and at the crew's discretion
The MBTA's rider rules, at the time of writing, allow a non-service dog on the Commuter Rail only during off-peak hours, on a leash, and only if the crew agrees. A dog may not sit on a seat. Peak means the weekday windows of 7 to 10 AM and 4 to 7 PM, so those trains are off the table. Rules change and a conductor's call on a crowded car is final, so read the MBTA page first.
The line runs from Rockport through Gloucester and West Gloucester, on to Manchester and Beverly Farms, and down the North Shore to Boston. At every station your dog is on a leash under the town's dog rules before you reach the platform; in Gloucester the city's dog regulations apply from the moment you leave the car. An off-peak weekday ride is a midday or evening ride, rarely the ride a commuter needs.

What it asks
A train asks for a settle on a hard floor, a short leash and no interest in strangers
A commuter car is a narrow aisle, a swaying floor, feet, bags and people who did not choose to sit beside a dog. The dog that does well can lie on a mat at your feet for forty minutes and ignore the doors at every station. Loose-leash walking through the lot and along the platform matters as much as the ride; that is where a dog meets a suitcase, a bicycle and another dog at close quarters.
Neutrality is the word our trainers use: not friendly, not worried, just uninterested. A dog that pulls toward every passenger, whines when the brakes come on or scrambles for a seat will be asked off at the next stop, and that is fair to everyone else on board. Practice the settle at home on a mat, then on a bench outside the Gloucester station while trains come and go.

A first ride
How to try a weekday off-peak ride, in six steps
If you do want your dog on the train, for a midday trip to Manchester or an evening in Boston, treat the first ride as a training session rather than a journey. Go one stop at a quiet hour and come straight back. The peak windows are written around weekday commuting; for weekends and holidays, read the MBTA page that morning rather than assume.
Bring a mat the dog already knows from home, a leash short enough to keep it against your leg, and nothing that smells like food. Pick a door in the middle of the train and stand near a vestibule where you can step off quietly at the next station if the dog does not cope. A tired dog settles and a fresh one paces, so walk first.

How Dogtown fits
