Working from home with a dog: the daycare days that keep both of you sane
The dog that was fine while you commuted is now at your feet nine hours a day, and neither of you is getting much done. This page is about building a week that gives the dog a real outlet, protects your calls, and keeps the dog able to be alone when the office wants you.
What changes
Constant company with no routine turns a settled dog into a shadow
A dog whose person is home all day does not get more exercise; it gets more presence. It learns that you might get up at any moment, so it never fully rests, follows you to the kitchen and lies across the office doorway. Barking at the delivery truck becomes barking at every truck, because you are there to react. And the dog quietly loses the skill of being alone, so the first in-person day in months produces a frantic animal and a chewed door.
Boredom shows up in a shape people misread as neediness. A dog that noses your elbow during every call is often underworked, not overattached. Our handlers see the same shift in dogs whose people moved to Cape Ann with a remote job: settled in the daycare report card, restless at home. The answer is not another room, and it is not five days a week either; it is a pattern the dog can count on.

The plan
Build the week in four steps: audit, one half day, settle the pattern, protect office days
Week one: audit, and book nothing. Note when the dog barks, when your heaviest calls fall and how long it actually sleeps. Week two: the free evaluation, weekdays before 9:30 AM, then one half day at $33 on the day your calendar is worst; the midday window at 12 to 1 PM lets you work a morning and drop the dog for the afternoon session. Weeks three and four: settle on one or two set days and buy the matching pack, $290 for ten half days or $200 for five full days.
Then protect the office days. A full day at $42 covers a day in Boston, with drop-off from 6:30 AM and pick-up until 6:30 PM, and the Pup Van at $10 each way in the four towns takes the detour to Eastern Ave out of a morning that already has a train in it. If the dog comes home still wired, add a lick mat at $5 or the sniff room at $7, or try a Dogtown Academy half day at $69 for a dog that needs a job. A dog that sleeps through your calls needs none of this.

Cape Ann specifics
The midday window, a lunchtime trail and the storm days when the power is out
The 12 to 1 PM drop-off window is the remote worker's friend: a morning of calls, then an afternoon half day for the dog while you finish. On the days the dog is home, a lunchtime loop in Ravenswood Park or on the trails of Dogtown Common gives you both an hour of air, with a tick check afterward from April to November. From October 1 to April 30 Gloucester's beaches take dogs, Good Harbor on even days and Wingaersheek on odd.
Nor'easter days are the hidden problem. The power flickers, the yard is a drift, the calls go on and the dog has been inside for two days. Our indoor play floors run when the turf yard is iced, so a daycare day booked the night before a storm is a real plan; the snow emergency answers page explains closures. In summer, a dog that is home with you needs its walk before eight, and the pools on our yard are why a July daycare day beats a hot deck.

What not to do
Do not use daycare as a punishment, book five days or let the dog set the schedule
Daycare is not where the dog goes because it barked through your Tuesday call; it is where it goes every Tuesday, so it stops needing to bark. Do not book five days a week because you can afford to; a dog that is never home with you loses the point of your working from home, and an overtired dog is no calmer. Two set days beat a different pattern every week.
Do not let the dog run the day, sleeping on your lap through every call and then demanding a walk at four. Teach place beside the desk and pay the dog for staying there. Do not go from months at home to an eight-hour office day with no rehearsal; that is the door that gets chewed. And do not leave the evaluation until the week the office calls you back; the slot you want is a weekday morning, and so is your train.
