Adolescent dogs: the six-to-eighteen-month stretch and what helps
Somewhere around six months the puppy you trained is replaced by a bigger dog with the same face and half the recall. It is a phase, it ends, and on Cape Ann it collides with off-season beaches, a dog park and a leash law.
What changes
The body finishes before the brain does, and the recall goes first
An adolescent dog has an adult's legs and a puppy's judgment. Hormones arrive, whether or not the dog stays intact, and with them a sudden interest in other dogs, in smells at the far end of the field and in anything except you. Cues that were solid go soft. Play gets harder and louder, and a dog that was welcome in every group starts to test older dogs. The AKC's expert advice describes all of it as a normal stage.
A second fear period often lands between six and fourteen months, so a dog that trotted past the fish trucks last month may balk at a new mailbox this week. The fix is patience and distance, not a firm hand. Energy peaks in this window too, and an underworked adolescent invents its own work: the couch, the trash, the fence line. The plan
Three stages: hold the routine, add a job, then taper
Six to nine months is the stage to hold steady. Keep the daycare days the dog already knows, two or three a week at $42 a full day, because a matched playgroup with a handler present is where a teenager learns that rough play has limits without a fight breaking out. A full-day 10-pack at $380 covers a month of that. Nine to twelve months is when a job helps. A Dogtown Academy full day is $89, or a half day $69, and swaps some open play for a training session with our trainer, treadmill and agility work, scent games and structured settle time. Twelve to eighteen months is the taper: many households drop to one or two daycare days, or to a 30-minute solo walk at $35 on the busiest weekday. A dog that is calm at home on a two-day week needs nothing more from us.

Cape Ann specifics
Off-season beaches, the dog park and a leash law give a teenager every chance to fail in public
The off-season beach is the great temptation. Gloucester's beaches take dogs from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, and a nine-month-old on open sand with gulls and other dogs is a recall test it will fail. Keep a long line on until the dog comes back through distractions; Rockport asks for a leash or direct voice control, and a teenager has neither.
The fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park splits small and large dogs, which helps, but it is still unmatched adults with nobody running the group, and adolescents are the dogs most often told off there. Gloucester's dog regulations cover leashing in public and the license, which renews by April 30. The Pup Van covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way for the daycare days that fall on your office days.

What not to do
Do not punish the ignoring, stack five days a week or wait it out alone
The first temptation is to get firmer. Corrections for a slow recall teach the dog that coming back ends badly, which is why our trainers work fear-free and force-free. The second is to exhaust the dog with five full days a week to buy a quiet house. An overtired adolescent is worse, not better; a matched group works because of the rest between play. Ask our handlers how your dog looks at three in the afternoon.
Do not let the off-leash freedom the puppy earned carry over unexamined, and do not let two adolescents wrestle in the kitchen until one screams. If the dog is lunging at other dogs on the leash, do not wait it out alone; that is what Level 2 is for, and for harder cases Focus & Flow, six weeks and twelve sessions of trigger work.
