Daycare for high-energy dogs: turf, pools, platforms and real rest
The owner of a high-energy dog wants two things from daycare: a dog who has actually worked, and a dog who is not more wound up at 6 PM than at 7 AM. The second is the hard one. This page explains how the day is built to deliver both, and which dogs need the Academy instead.

For the dog who could play all day, and needs a handler to call time
The dogs this page describes are the ones Cape Ann is full of: the lab who swims at Wingaersheek in January, the pointer who runs Dogtown Common and comes home ready for more, the adolescent doodle who has learned that a bored afternoon is a shredded couch. Their problem is rarely lack of exercise; it is lack of an off switch. A day here is designed to give them both.
It is not the answer for every fast dog. A dog whose energy is anxiety in disguise needs a smaller circle and probably a training plan before it needs more running. A dog whose play tips into bullying, pinning and chasing dogs that have asked it to stop, is managed but not fixed by a group; we say so at the evaluation and steer you to Dogtown Academy or a program from our training team. And a dog with a joint or heart condition should have a vet's word before a full day of turf and pools.

The day
Hard play in blocks, real rest in between, and a job in the middle
A high-energy dog arrives in the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window and joins its group of 7 to 10, matched at the evaluation for play style so the fast dogs have partners who can keep up. The main stage is the outdoor turf yard: pools to leap into, platforms to claim, room for a proper chase. On the days a storm or ice closes the yard, the indoor play floors take the same group and the same handler, and the pace drops a notch by design.
Every block of play ends with water and a settle. Handlers call the rest, and a dog who cannot come down gets a few minutes in a quiet spot before the next round. In the middle of the day the add-ons do their work: a supervised treadmill session on the dogPACER ($10) for steady low-impact miles, or the sniff room ($7) for the scent work that tires a brain faster than running does.
Full-day pick-up is 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays and 4 to 6 PM on Saturday. Look at your dog. Loose, panting lightly, happy to lie down in the car: the day was right. Spinning at the door and barking all the way home: the day was too much play and too little rest, and the report card in the app will show it. Tell us, and the next day is shaped differently.

$42 a full day, $380 for ten, or $89 for an Academy day with a trainer
A full day is $42; five is $200 and ten is $380. A half day at $33 rarely satisfies a genuinely high-energy dog, though it works as the second session on a day that already had a long beach run. The unlimited membership at $700 a month is the route for a dog who needs to come four or more days a week, and it includes two enrichment sessions a month. Add-ons per day: treadmill $10, sniff room $7, puzzle game $7, frozen Kong $6.
Dogtown Academy is the upgrade for the dog who needs a job as much as a run. An Academy day is $89 (half day $69), with a training session, enrichment, fitness on the treadmill and low agility, matched play between rotations and one-on-one trainer time; packs are $415 for five full days and $785 for ten. Many high-energy dogs mix the two: Academy on Monday to set the week, daycare the rest.

Why Dogtown
A yard built for running, a floor built for storms, and handlers who stop the play
10,000 square feet is what lets a fast group run flat out without crashing into a group of seniors. The outdoor turf yard has pools and platforms; the indoor play floors keep a working dog working on the day a nor'easter shuts everything from Rockport to Manchester. Our groups are 7 to 10 dogs matched by play style, with a certified handler in the group who knows the difference between a fair chase and a hunt.
Under the same roof are the pieces that turn exercise into a settled dog: the treadmill, the sniff room, the sensory garden used on Academy days, and a training team that runs everything from Bright Beginnings to the Canine Campus hybrid programs. A dog that is too much for the group goes into the Academy rather than out the door.

Getting here
The early window fits a commuter, and the beach calendar fills the gaps
On weekdays the windows are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturday is 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM, and Sunday has no daycare. For Boston commuters, the Rockport line's rule that dogs travel only off-peak, never 7 to 10 AM or 4 to 7 PM, means the dog stays home or comes here. The Pup Van collects for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; elsewhere, ask us for pricing.
Outside daycare, plan around the beaches. Gloucester's public beaches take dogs October 1 to April 30, Good Harbor on even-numbered days (and not after April 1, when the piping plovers nest) and Wingaersheek on odd days. Rockport closes its beaches to dogs June 1 to September 15. From May to September a fast dog loses its best free run, which is exactly when daycare days matter most. The Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, a fenced two acres with a large-dog side, runs all year.
