A new puppy on Cape Ann: the first six months, week by week
Weeks eight to twenty-six go fast, and most of what matters happens at home and at the vet. This page walks the six months in order, says where a class, a half day or a bath fits and where it does not, and lists the Cape Ann dates to know first.
What changes
A puppy rewrites itself every few weeks until the vaccines are done
Between eight and sixteen weeks a puppy is in its most open window for learning what counts as normal: strangers, hats, trucks, the vacuum, being picked up. It is also unvaccinated or half vaccinated, so the ground it walks on matters. Your vet sets the shot schedule, and the AVMA's vaccination guidance explains why the series runs in stages. A puppy that sleeps eighteen hours a day is doing what it should.
From four to six months the adult teeth arrive and the chewing peaks, the bladder becomes more reliable, and a first fear period can make a bold puppy suddenly wary of the recycling bin. Growth is fast and joints are soft, so long forced walks and repeated jumping are worth avoiding. By six months you are at the front edge of adolescence, which has its own guide.

The plan
Home and the vet first, a class from twelve weeks, daycare when the series is complete
The first month home needs nothing from Dogtown. It needs a crate, a schedule, short car rides and a calm adult dog or two met in your own kitchen. What it needs from the town is a license: in Gloucester that is the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave with the rabies certificate, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee at the time of writing. From about twelve weeks, Tiny Tails Puppy School, written for pups from 8 to 16 weeks and run fear-free and force-free, is the class, from $94 per session.
Daycare waits for the vet. When Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella are on file, book the free evaluation for a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a group of 7 to 10 dogs sorted by size and play style. Make the first daycare day a half day at $33, because a four-month-old needs its afternoon nap more than it needs more friends. FIRST15 takes 15 percent off that visit, and a first bath from $55 needs no evaluation.

Cape Ann specifics
The license deadline, the beach calendar and tick season are the local dates that matter
Gloucester licenses run to April 30, so a puppy licensed in the fall renews the following spring, and a late renewal carries a $20 penalty. Manchester-by-the-Sea licenses run April 1 to March 31 at $20, or $25 if the dog is not neutered; Rockport and Essex license through their own town offices. Every town wants the rabies certificate, one more reason the vet visits come before anything else.
Gloucester's beaches take dogs from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, and Good Harbor closes to dogs from April 1 for nesting plovers. A June puppy will not see sand until October, which is no loss; a fall puppy gets the beach on a long line once the vet clears public ground. Ticks are active from April to November, so read the CDC's tick pages and ask the vet when prevention can start.

What not to do
Skip the dog park, the full day and the July pavement
The fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park is not a socialization plan for a puppy. It is unmatched adult dogs at full speed with nobody in charge, and one bad tumble at fourteen weeks can shape how a dog feels about other dogs for years. Our playgroups are built to be the opposite: the same seven to ten dogs, matched by size and temperament, with a handler present throughout. Wait for the recall and for a body that can take a bump.
Do not book a full day the week the shots finish, however tempting it is to have a Tuesday back. In summer, put the back of your hand on the pavement before a puppy walks on it; if you cannot hold it there, the pads cannot either. And do not give up on the crate because the first night was loud. The crate is what makes a first overnight stay, at $78 a night, uneventful later.
