Daycare vs Dogtown Academy: $42 or $89, and what the difference buys
Owners of adolescent dogs ask us this more than anything else. Both services happen in the same building at 210 Eastern Ave with the same handlers and the same small groups; the difference is whether the day has a curriculum. Here is what each costs, what the extra dollars purchase, and which dogs need it.

Daycare pricing: $42 a full day, $33 a half day, 5-packs at $200 and $150, 10-packs at $380 and $290, and the unlimited membership at $700 a month. Academy pricing: $89 a full day, $69 a half day, 5-packs at $415 and $320, 10-packs at $785 and $610. There is no Academy membership. The gap on a full day is $47 and on a half day it is $36, and both gaps narrow with packs because the Academy 10-pack takes more off per day.
What the daycare price includes: a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, the turf yard, indoor play when the weather turns, water and rest breaks, and a report card in the app. What the Academy price adds: a daily training session with our trainer, individual trainer time at your dog's level, rotations through enrichment, fitness and trainer-led settle time, and a report card that tells you what to practise at home.

What the gap buys
The extra $47 buys a trainer's attention, structured rotations and a day that teaches switching off
The trainer is the core of it. Every Academy day includes a training session with our trainer, building on whatever you are working on at home: loose-leash walking, a settle on a mat, recall, door manners. That session is the single thing daycare cannot offer, because a daycare handler's job is to run a safe group, not to teach a cue.
The rotations are the second thing. A daycare dog plays, drinks, rests and plays again. An Academy dog moves between training, enrichment, fitness and play in blocks, with rest between, so it practises switching on and switching off all day. For adolescents who come home from daycare more wired than they left, that structure is usually the fix, and it is why the Academy report card includes what your dog found hard as well as what it loved.
Third, the sensory garden, treadmill sessions and puzzle work are inside the Academy price, whereas on a daycare day they are add-ons at $5 to $10 each. A daycare dog with a treadmill session and a puzzle game added is still well under the Academy price, but the arithmetic gets closer for a dog who needs several add-ons to come home settled.

Which to choose
Adolescents, wired dogs and puppies building confidence go to the Academy; easy social dogs stay in daycare
Choose daycare when your dog already has the manners you want and just needs the day filled. A steady four-year-old Golden who greets well, settles at home and sleeps after a play day is a daycare dog; paying more than double to teach it things it already knows is a poor use of money. Daycare also fits the household on the membership, because a Monday-to-Friday dog at $700 a month cannot be matched by any Academy pack.
Choose the Academy for the six-to-eighteen-month adolescent whose training is slipping, the dog who comes home from daycare more amped than tired, the shy puppy who needs confidence built in small doses, and the older dog who plainly enjoys having a job. Two Academy days a week is the common pattern, with the report card homework carrying the work between visits.
Mix them when money is tight. One Academy day and two daycare days costs far less than three Academy days, and for most adolescents that single structured day is what changes the other two. If the problem is reactivity, fear or guarding, neither is the right tool; that is a training program rather than a daycare product, and we will point you to the right one.

Summer crowds, off-season beaches and the Pup Van make the Academy's skills worth more here
The skills the Academy builds are Cape Ann skills. A dog who can settle on a mat and walk on a loose leash through a crowd is the dog you can take to St. Peter's Fiesta in late June or the Schooner Festival over Labor Day weekend, and a dog with a working recall is the one you can trust at Good Harbor on even-numbered days between October 1 and March 31, at the time of writing.
Both services share the same logistics. Weekday windows run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturday windows are 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. For either service the Pup Van runs at $10 each way within Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
Seasonality nudges the choice. Summer, when the beaches are closed to dogs and the pavement is hot, is when adolescents lose their outlets and the Academy's structured rotations earn their price. In the off-season, when a February beach morning burns the energy before drop-off, many Academy dogs step back to daycare and keep one Academy day for the homework.
