Longer stays

Can my dog stay longer than two weeks?

There are two reasons to want more than two weeks: a long trip, or a dog that seems to need more time. They have different answers. This page shows how a longer trip is usually built, prices it from our published list, and sets out the day options that carry the work on afterward.

Why two weeks

The programs stop at two weeks because the next stage of learning has to happen in your home

A stay can build a skill and test it against distractions, but it cannot teach your dog that the skill applies in your kitchen, on your street and in your voice. That stage starts at the go-home lesson. More nights in our Gloucester building mostly polish a cue in a place your dog will soon leave, which is why Advanced spends its second week on outings and proofing rather than on more of the same repetitions.

So the useful question is rarely how to add a third training week. It is either how to cover a trip that runs longer than the program, or how to keep structure once your dog is home. Both have good answers built from services with published prices. A dog whose needs go beyond manners, such as fear or reactivity, is a different case, and the consult will point to a longer program.

  • A long trip: add care nights, not training weeks
  • More structure afterward: daycare or Academy days
  • More training: a longer program, not a longer stay
  • Fear or reactivity: a program that keeps you present

Nights first

For a trip longer than the program, put the ordinary nights first and the training last

If the team can arrange extra nights, their order matters. Nights placed before the program act as settling-in time: your dog learns the suite, the routine and the playgroups before any training begins. Training placed last ends close to your return, so the go-home lesson follows the final training day rather than a week of plain care. Reverse the order and the freshest work sits idle while you are still away.

Worked example, from published prices: a three-week trip. The first week is an ordinary overnight stay, 7 nights at $78, or $546, with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring; the Dogtown Classic bundle would add $10 a night and the Deluxe $15. Advanced then covers the last two weeks at its quoted price, and the lesson falls the day after you land. Whether the nights can run straight into the program is confirmed at the consult.

Days after

After pick-up, daycare and Academy days add structure without adding nights away

Most of what a family hopes a longer stay would do, it can get from day services once the dog is home and the cues are in your hands. Daycare keeps a sociable graduate exercised in a matched playgroup of 7 to 10. Dogtown Academy days add a session with our trainer to each day, so the skills keep being practiced by someone besides you. Both send your dog home each night, which is where the new habits have to live.

Start slowly. A half day in the first week back is plenty for most graduates; then build toward your usual pattern. Packs lower the cost per day: a half-day daycare 5-pack is $150, or $30 a day, and an Academy half-day 5-pack is $320. Worked example: six Academy half days spread over three weeks cost $389 as one 5-pack plus a single day, against $414 bought one at a time.

Longer programs

If your dog needs more training, choose a longer program rather than a longer stay

Dogtown's longer programs keep your dog at home at night, and that is the point. Canine Campus is hybrid day training with pick-up and drop-off: Freshman runs 2 weeks with about 10 training and adventure days, Dean's List 4 weeks with about 20 sessions, and Graduate 6 weeks with about 30, each with daily reports, homework and an end-of-program lesson. For dogs with big feelings, React Less, Relax More runs 8 weeks and 16 sessions, and Polished Pup 10 weeks and 20.

These are slower than a stay by design, because they space the learning out and put you inside it. One sensible sequence is a stay to build the basics, a few weeks of practice at home, then a hybrid or session-based program if something specific remains. Gabriella Pope sets the order at the consult. If you are thinking about a second stay later on, ask about it then, because refresher terms are not published.

  • Canine Campus: 2, 4 or 6 weeks, home every night
  • React Less, Relax More: 8 weeks, 16 sessions
  • Polished Pup: 10 weeks, 20 sessions
  • Private sessions: from $94, booked as needed

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Could Foundation and Advanced run back to back for three weeks?
Advanced already contains everything in Foundation, so running both in a row would repeat the first week's work rather than extend it. If your dog seems to need more than two weeks, say so at the consult; the usual answer is Advanced plus practice at home, or a longer program in which your dog sleeps at home.
Does training continue on extra overnight nights?
As published, an overnight stay is care rather than training: a suite, playgroups by day and monitoring at night, at $78 a night. Whether any part of the program could carry into nights added around it is a question for the consult, and the answer belongs in your written terms.
Is the Unlimited Daycare Membership worth it after a stay?
Only for near-daily attendance. At $700 a month it beats single full days once a dog comes about 17 times in a month, since 16 full days cost $672. For two or three days a week, a 10-pack at $380 usually works out cheaper. The membership also includes 15 percent off grooming and two enrichment sessions a month.
Can my dog stay for a month while we move house?
Ask at the consult. The program itself lasts one or two weeks, and longer cover would mean ordinary overnight nights at $78 around it, if they can be arranged. During a move, a gentler plan is often kinder: care nights while the boxes go in, then training once the new home is set up and your dog has settled.
