Daycare after training

How to continue with daycare after board and train

A playgroup can be the best maintenance a social dog gets, or the quickest way to wear down a fresh habit. Which one it becomes depends on the dog, the length of the day and what the people around it reward.

Before you start

A playgroup keeps social skills working and can wear down new manners, so plan for both

Group play rehearses things a stay works hard to build. A dog that settles between bouts, takes a break when another dog says no and walks away from the gate calmly is practicing self-control in the most distracting room of its week. Play also keeps an adolescent's energy from spilling into your evening. VCA's guidance describes daycare as a likely good option for social puppies, and the AKC points to dogs that are well socialized and enjoy the company of other dogs.

The same room can reward the habits you just paid to change. If the stay was about jumping on people, a lobby full of friendly greeters can undo a week of four paws on the floor in a single morning. If it was about pulling, the dash from the car to the door is a daily rehearsal. That does not rule daycare out. It means the front desk needs to know what your dog was working on, and pick-up needs a rule of its own.

  • Practiced in a group: breaks, calm approaches, settling between bouts
  • At risk in a group: jumping greetings, gate rushing, over-arousal
  • Your part: the same rules at drop-off and pick-up as at home

Who should wait

Some dogs should not go back to a group yet, and the stay usually tells you which

The clearest guide is what happened during the stay. Daycare integration is part of both programs when a dog is ready, and the daily updates told you whether yours joined a group. A dog that spent its stay training near the groups rather than in them should not be dropped into one afterward on the assumption that the training fixed it. VCA's guidance is that daycare is likely not a good choice for a puppy that already shows aggression toward other dogs, or is shy and prefers time alone.

Other dogs to hold back: one that comes home from a group day pacing, snapping or unable to settle; one in the middle of reactivity work, where every bad moment costs progress; and one that is newly sore, ill or recovering. VCA also notes that poor experiences with other dogs could contribute to dog aggression or fear, which is the strongest argument for patience. Adventure Academy is the Dogtown program for dogs hoping to join the pack later.

  • Did not join a playgroup during the stay
  • Reactive or selective with other dogs
  • Shy, and happier with quiet company
  • Wired, snappy or sleepless after group days
  • Sore, ill or recovering

The steps

Bring a graduate back to daycare in six steps, starting with a half day

The order below protects the go-home lesson. Your dog's first days back are spent at home, practicing the plan in easy rooms, so the new habits are settled before it meets the busiest setting in its week. Then daycare comes in short, with clear information for the people who will be handling your dog. If your dog was a daycare regular before the stay, resist slotting it straight back into its old schedule, which belonged to its old habits.

Drop-off and pick-up windows run weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; a half day collected in the 12 to 1 PM window is a gentle first visit. From Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Pup Van makes the trip for $10 each way, which skips the excited dash across the parking lot altogether.

Give your dog a few days at home on the go-home plan before its first group day

  2. 02

Book a half day for the first visit and collect in the midday window

  3. 03

Tell the front desk which cues your dog knows and which habits you are trying to end

  4. 04

Keep a pick-up rule: leash on and four paws down before any greeting

  5. 05

Read the report card and watch the evening for signs of over-arousal

  6. 06

Add days, or swap some for Academy days, only while the evenings stay calm

Mistakes we see

Daycare goes wrong after a stay when it replaces practice or runs too long

The commonest mistake is treating group days as the training. Play exercises a dog and keeps it social; it does not rehearse your recall, your loose leash or your place cue in your own house. Keep a few easy repetitions going at home on daycare days too, before dinner and kept short. A pleasantly tired dog is often a willing student for three minutes.

The second is too much, too soon. A dog that goes from a quiet training stay straight to five full days a week can come home wound up, and over-arousal is where jumping and mouthing return. A full day is $42 and a half day $33, and 5- and 10-packs bring the rate down, so there is no saving in rushing to a long week. Build up slowly and let the evenings tell you how much is enough.

When to call us

When the group is not right, Academy days and walks keep the routine without the crowd

A Dogtown Academy day, $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, swaps open play for a structured rotation of training, enrichment, fitness and play, and every Academy day includes a training session with our trainer. For a board and train graduate that means a trainer still working with your dog each week. Tell the front desk which program your dog finished, so the Academy trainer knows the words your dog learned.

For dogs that should skip groups for now, at-home walks by Dogtown staff, 20, 30 or 60 minutes at $25, $35 or $55, break up a long day; ask whether we cover your address. In summer, when Gloucester's public beaches are closed to dogs, a midday walk or an Academy half day can carry the exercise. If a dog that used to love the group comes home flat or tense, message the front desk through the Dogtown app before booking the next day.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my dog go back to daycare the day after board and train?
It can, if it joined a group comfortably during the stay, but we suggest a few days at home first. The go-home lesson is fresh, and your dog needs to practice the new cues with you before it spends a day in the busiest setting it knows. Then start with a half day at $33.
Will the daycare staff use my dog's new cues?
Daycare handlers run safe group play rather than training sessions, so do not count on cue practice during a standard day. Tell the front desk what your dog learned and which habits you are ending, so the people handling your dog know. For a trainer working the cues during the day, book Dogtown Academy instead.
My dog did not join a playgroup during the stay. Can it start daycare now?
Not on the strength of the stay alone. If group time was not right during board and train, the reasons usually still apply. Ask Gabriella Pope at the go-home lesson what she saw, and look at Adventure Academy, which builds structured socialization and carefully matched introductions over 4, 6 or 8 weeks.
How many daycare days a week suit a dog fresh from training?
Fewer than you might expect at first. Start with one half day, watch how your dog settles that evening, and add days only if it sleeps well and the new manners hold. Let the evenings, not the calendar, decide how many days follow, and consider the unlimited membership at $700 a month only once a routine has settled.
Does daycare count as socialization after Advanced?
It is social time, which helps a dog that enjoys other dogs. Advanced's neutrality work teaches a different skill, ignoring the dogs it passes on the street, and a playgroup does not practice that. Keep walking past dogs at a comfortable distance on your own routes so both skills stay in balance.
