Adding time

Can I extend a board and train stay?

Wanting more time usually means one of two things: the stay is going well and you want more of it, or it is not going as hoped. They call for different answers. This page gives a rule for telling them apart, the questions to ask about availability and the alternatives when the calendar is full.

What is confirmed

An extension is confirmed case by case, because it needs trainer time and a suite on the extra dates

Nothing about extensions is printed on this site: not whether a stay can be lengthened, how much notice is needed, or how the price changes. Those terms are set when you book, alongside the quote that follows the assessment, so ask about them then, even if you do not expect to need them. An extension is only possible if the trainer's calendar has room for the extra blocks and a suite is free for the extra nights, which is why the answer can differ from one week to the next.

What is published is what the extra week would contain. Advanced includes everything in Foundation, then adds advanced obedience and distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and impulse control, confidence building and structured socialization, and a second scheduled coaching lesson. So moving from Foundation to Advanced is not more of the same week; it is a different second week, aimed at a dog whose basics already hold. Whether that switch can happen mid-stay is part of the same booking conversation.

  • Whether the stay can be lengthened, and how late you can decide
  • Whether Foundation can become Advanced once the stay has started
  • How the price and any deposit change
  • How the go-home lesson dates move
  • Whether a suite and trainer time are free on the extra dates

Will it help

Extra days help a dog that is learning fast indoors; they rarely help one that is still unsettled

Read the daily updates for the trend by the middle of the stay. If your dog is eating, resting and offering behavior, and its cues are solid in the training room but wobbly around distraction, the extra week of proofing and outings is exactly what Advanced is built for. If your dog is still not settled after several days, more nights in the same building are unlikely to change that, and training with nights at home may suit it better.

The table sets out the common situations and the route usually worth discussing. One row is about care rather than training: a trip home that runs late. In that case the useful question is whether ordinary overnight nights, at $78 a night with playgroups by day once your dog is ready, can follow the program, rather than whether the training itself can stretch. Either way, the answer is confirmed for your dates.

How to ask

Raise it early, because extra days must fit the trainer's calendar and your lesson dates

The later an extension is requested, the fewer options remain, so raise it as soon as the updates suggest it. A short message is enough to start. Ask the training team whether they recommend more time and why, because their reason tells you which row of the table you are in. Then ask about availability for the extra days and what happens to the go-home lesson, which moves with the end of the stay.

Get the change in writing before you commit: the new end date, the new lesson date or dates, any change in price and any effect on what you have already paid. Then check your own side. A later pick-up must fall inside a window, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6:30 PM, Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6 PM, and your dog's vaccines and license must stay current through the last night.

If the calendar is full

When extra nights are not available, add training without adding nights

A full calendar does not end the plan. Canine Campus continues training by day while your dog sleeps at home: Freshman runs 2 weeks with about 10 training and adventure days, Dean's List 4 weeks with about 20 sessions, and Graduate 6 weeks with about 30, each with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports and an end-of-program lesson. Dogtown Academy days, $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, include a training session with our trainer, and private sessions start from $94.

For families on Cape Ann the logistics are simple. The Pup Van runs in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way and can be added to Academy days. The evaluation your dog took before the stay also covers daycare and the Academy, so those days can be booked online or in the Dogtown app without starting again. Gabriella Pope can tell you at the go-home lesson which route continues the work best.

  • Canine Campus: 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training, home at night
  • Dogtown Academy: a training session every day, $89 full or $69 half
  • Private sessions: from $94
  • Pup Van: $10 each way in the four Cape Ann towns

Ways to add time or training

An extension draws on Dogtown's training programs and overnight stays, and Academy days add training when nights are full.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I switch from Foundation to Advanced once the stay has started?
Ask the training team as soon as the idea comes up. Whether a mid-stay switch is possible depends on trainer time and a free suite for the second week, and the terms are confirmed with your booking. The switch makes most sense when your dog's basics already hold indoors and the next job is distraction and the real world.
Can my dog stay on as an overnight guest after the program?
Ask at booking. Overnight stays are $78 a night, with playgroups by day once a dog is ready and 24/7 monitoring at night, and the same evaluation covers them. The go-home lesson still needs you, so agree when it happens if your dog is staying on for a few extra nights of care.
Does extending change the go-home lesson?
Yes. The lesson moves with the end of the stay, and an extension into Advanced brings a second scheduled coaching lesson with it. Agree the new dates in writing when the extension is confirmed, inside a pick-up window you can stay for, so the handover is planned rather than squeezed in.
Is there a board and train longer than two weeks?
Dogtown publishes two lengths, Foundation at one week and Advanced at two. For dogs that need longer, the published options are Canine Campus, up to 6 weeks of day training with nights at home, and the Level 3 programs such as Polished Pup, 10 weeks and 20 sessions, where you hold the leash.
