Board and train while you travel
A trip and a training program can share the same fortnight, and plenty of families plan them together. The trick is to choose the program for the dog first, then fit the travel around it, with the go-home lesson in your calendar before the flights.
Matching dates
Choose the program for the dog, then fit the trip around it
Start with what your dog needs, not the length of the trip. Foundation, one week, suits puppies, young dogs and missing manners. Advanced, two weeks, suits adolescents who know their cues at home and lose them outdoors. If your dog needs Advanced and your trip lasts a week, it is usually better to drop off a few days before you leave or collect a few days after you return than to squeeze two weeks of work into one.
Then put the go-home lesson where you can give it your full attention. A lesson on the evening you land, tired from a long flight, wastes the most important part of the program. Leave a day between your return and the lesson if you can. For Advanced, the two scheduled coaching lessons need planning too, so ask Gabby at the consult how they sit around pick-up before you book anything you cannot change.
- A week away and a young dog with missing manners: Foundation
- Two weeks away and a distractible adolescent: Advanced
- Trip shorter than the program: start earlier or finish later
- The go-home lesson: a day after you land, not the same evening
Planning backward
Work back from the departure date, and start several weeks out
The steps before a stay take time, and the evaluation can only happen on a weekday morning, so plan backward from the day you leave. Several weeks gives room for a consult, an evaluation, any booster your dog needs and an unhurried drop-off. If your dog is new to Dogtown, a daycare day between the evaluation and the stay helps the first night feel familiar.
Lead times vary with the season, so ask the front desk how far ahead to start for your dates. Gloucester's own calendar gets busy around St. Peter's Fiesta in late June, the July 3 fireworks and the Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend, as some families head away and visitors arrive. If your trip falls near those weekends or a school vacation week, start the process earlier than you think you need to.

Drop-off and pick-up
Drop off the day before you leave, and plan Sundays and flights with care
A drop-off on the morning of a flight is the most stressful version for everyone, the dog included. Drop off the day before if you can, inside a window: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6:30 PM, Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6 PM. Sunday is reserved for overnight guests, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, and whether a board and train can start or finish then is confirmed at the consult.
From Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, ask whether the Pup Van, $10 each way, can bring your dog in, which leaves your morning free for packing; outside those towns, ask us about pick-up. If you plan to take the Rockport line toward the airport, remember that the MBTA keeps larger dogs off trains at weekday peak hours, so bring your dog to us by car or van before you set off.
From away
Following the stay from away: the app, the front desk and a local contact
The daily updates come through the Dogtown app, so they reach you wherever your phone has a connection. Read them when it suits your time zone and reply in messages with any question; the front desk passes it to the training team. Whether the updates carry photos, video or a written note is confirmed when you book. If you will be hard to reach for a stretch, a long flight or a week off the grid, tell the front desk before you go.
Name a local contact who can make decisions and collect your dog if your return is delayed. Flights get cancelled, and a nor'easter can close roads with little warning; the National Weather Service in Boston posts the forecasts worth checking before a winter trip. What happens if you are late back, including any extra nights, is part of the terms confirmed at booking. Whether you could visit during the stay rarely matters while you travel, but ask at the consult if it might.

Care instead
Sometimes a plain overnight stay is the better fit for the trip
Board and train is the right use of a trip when your dog needs manners or reliability and you can attend the lesson soon after you return. It is the wrong one when the problem is fear, reactivity or separation panic, which change best with you present, or when the trip runs well past two weeks and the lesson would be a long way off. In those cases an overnight stay covers the trip, and the training can follow once you are home.
An overnight suite is $78 a night, with daytime playgroups and 24/7 monitoring. The Dogtown Classic adds $10 a night for a daily pupsicle or puppy cup and 10 percent off grooming; the Dogtown Deluxe adds $15 for a stuffed Kong or Toppl, daily treadmill or enrichment play, the orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming. After you return, Canine Campus offers 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with nights at home. Both stays are laid out on the board and train page.
At Dogtown
Training while you are away
Board and train pairs Dogtown training with overnight nights; a plain overnight stay covers trips that need care rather than training.
