Holiday weeks
Holiday board and train
Holiday weeks look like the perfect time for a training stay: the family is away, the house is full, or both. They are also the weeks when calendars are tightest, so this page explains what to ask, when to ask it and how to plan the edges of a holiday program.
Availability
Holiday availability is confirmed at the consult, so ask in the fall
We do not publish whether board and train runs over the holidays, and we will not guess here. A training stay needs trainer time on most days of the program and a go-home lesson at the end, and both have to fit around the holiday hours set each year. Those decisions are made season by season, so the honest answer comes from the training team when you ask about specific dates.
Ask early. Send the training form with your holiday dates in September or October, and the consult can tell you whether the program fits, which start date works and when the lesson would fall. The unlimited daycare membership, $700 a month, lists priority holiday overnight-stay reservations among its benefits; whether that priority extends to a board and train is a question for the consult.
- Send your holiday dates on the training form early in the fall
- Holiday availability for training: confirmed at the consult
- Holiday hours: announced in the app and at the front desk
- Membership priority: listed for overnight stays; ask about training
The calendar
How Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks line up with one or two weeks of training
In 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, and New Year's Day on Friday, January 1, 2027. A one-week Foundation program maps neatly onto a Thanksgiving trip, and a two-week Advanced program could span Christmas and New Year. The table shows how each period might line up if availability allows, and what to settle at the consult. Holiday hours decide the edges, so nothing in it is a booking.
Keep the go-home lesson off the holiday itself and off the heaviest travel days. A lesson squeezed into Christmas Eve, with the car packed and relatives on the way, is a lesson half learned. If you are hosting rather than traveling, a program that ends a few days before the guests arrive gives you time to practice the door and the settle before the doorbell starts ringing.
| Period | Program that could fit | Settle at the consult |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving week (Thursday, November 26, 2026) | Foundation, one week | Whether the dates are open, the drop-off window and the lesson date |
| Christmas week (Christmas Day is Friday, December 25) | Foundation, one week | Holiday hours around December 24 to 26 and the pick-up day |
| Christmas to New Year (New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027) | Advanced, two weeks | Both coaching lessons, with neither on a holiday |
| Before guests arrive | Foundation, ending before the holiday | A lesson date early enough to practice at home first |
Holiday hours
Holiday hours move the windows, so confirm drop-off and pick-up in writing
Holiday hours are set for each holiday and announced in the Dogtown app and at the front desk, in person or on 978 491-5922. The regular windows are weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM, with Sunday open only to overnight guests from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. Any of those can shift around a holiday, so check the notice against your own dates.
Winter adds weather to the plan. A nor'easter can close roads or ground flights at short notice, and the National Weather Service in Boston is the forecast to watch. If a storm moves your pick-up or the lesson, message the front desk; late pick-up terms are confirmed at booking. From Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, ask whether the Pup Van, $10 each way, can bring your dog in on a busy travel day.

Training or care
If the goal is care rather than training, an overnight stay may be simpler
Not every holiday trip needs a training program. If your dog's manners are fine and you simply need it looked after, an overnight stay is $78 a night, with daytime playgroups and 24/7 monitoring, plus the Dogtown Classic at $10 a night or the Deluxe at $15. Board and train earns its place when the trip coincides with something the dog needs to learn: a door it rushes, a leash it pulls, a recall it ignores, or guests it jumps on.
Some dogs should not do either over the holidays. A dog that has never spent a night away, or one that struggles in new places, is better off with a first stay in a quiet week, not the busiest one of the year. And a puppy that arrives at Christmas is usually too young and too new for a stay: Tiny Tails Puppy School, for pups 8 to 16 weeks, is the place to start, and the youngest age for a stay is confirmed at the consult.
Coming home
Coming home to a holiday house: protect the new skills and the dog
A dog fresh from a training stay that walks into a house full of guests, food and noise faces the hardest test of its new skills on day one. Keep it simple. Use the place cue on a mat away from the kitchen, keep the leash on at the front door while guests arrive, and give the dog a quiet room to retreat to. The ASPCA suggests a safe space such as an interior room, and asks that guests keep their medications in a closed cabinet rather than a bag.
Holiday food is the other hazard. The ASPCA warns that fatty, sweet and spicy foods and turkey or chicken bones can all be dangerous, and that tinsel and broken ornaments can injure a dog that swallows them. Keep your dog's diet the same as any other day. For a quieter test of a fresh recall, Gloucester's beaches are open to dogs in winter, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd ones, with your dog on a long line.
- Place on a mat, away from the kitchen and the door
- Leash on when guests arrive, until greetings are calm
- A quiet room the dog can retreat to
- No scraps, bones, tinsel or guests' medications within reach
