Before the stay

The board and train evaluation

Owners often expect a single screening. There are two, and each answers a different question: is board and train the right program for this dog, and is this dog ready to stay with us?

Two steps

The consult chooses the program; the evaluation confirms the stay

The consult is about training. You send the training form, the team replies within one hour on business days, and you meet Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, for a short assessment. She looks at your dog's history and your goals, chooses between Foundation, Advanced and the other programs, and the stay is quoted after it. Gabby holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and has ten-plus years with behaviorally complex dogs, which is why the consult asks about the reasons behind behavior, not just the list of problems.

The evaluation is about the stay. Because a board and train dog spends its nights with us and may join daycare playgroups, it takes the same free evaluation as our daycare, Academy, overnight and walking dogs: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a group. It runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment. A dog that already comes to Dogtown has usually done it, but tell us if anything has changed since.

  • Consult: the program, the goals and the quote, with Gabby
  • Evaluation: a temperament test and supervised group time
  • Evaluation window: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, by appointment
  • Paperwork: Rabies, DHPP, Bordetella and a dog license

The consult

At the consult, expect questions about history, health, triggers and what you want to change

The better the history, the better the plan. Expect to be asked how old your dog is and where it came from, what training it has had, what you have tried, and where the problems show up: the front door, the leash, other dogs, being left alone. Bring your vet's name and any recent notes. If your dog has ever bitten or snapped, describe it fully on the form, who was involved and what happened just before, because that history weighs on the decision more than anything else.

Bring questions of your own. The AKC's advice on board and train programs is to discuss the methods, the equipment and the behaviors to be taught, and to get them in writing; ours are force-free, with no prong, choke or shock collars. Ask where your dog will sleep and what the updates will look like. Ask the things this page cannot answer for you, too: the youngest age we accept for a stay, the start dates open and the terms that come with the quote.

Evaluation morning

The evaluation morning, from drop-off to the result

Plan the evaluation weeks before the stay, not days. It runs only on weekday mornings, so a program starting on a Saturday needs an earlier weekday, and a dog that needs more time to get comfortable in groups is better discovered early. Bring your dog on a flat collar or harness and a leash, with the records, and ask the front desk what time to collect it.

The result is not a score. Our team tells you how your dog greeted, played and settled, and whether a group looks right during the stay, and Gabby weighs that alongside what she saw at the consult. If everything fits, the next step is to book dates. If not, it may be a different start date, a different program, or a few half days of daycare first, at $33 each, so the building is familiar before the first night.

What stops a stay

What can stop or postpone a stay, and what is decided case by case

Some things stop a stay until they are fixed. A missing or expired Rabies, DHPP or Bordetella record, or a lapsed dog license, means the stay waits for the paperwork, and Massachusetts law separately requires commercial boarding and training kennels to keep a record of each dog's license. A dog that is coughing, vomiting or otherwise unwell should not come in, so call your vet first and tell the front desk. How a stay moves in that case is part of the terms confirmed at booking.

Other things change the program rather than the paperwork. Significant reactivity, deep fear and separation panic change best with the owner present, so Gabby usually points those dogs to React Less, Relax More, Brave & Balanced, Calm & Connected or private sessions instead. A bite history, resource guarding or aggression is decided case by case at the consult; we publish no yes or no, because the details decide it. A sudden change in an adult dog's behavior is a reason to see your vet before any trainer.

  • Stops until fixed: missing vaccines or a lapsed license
  • Postpones: a dog that is coughing or unwell
  • Changes the program: significant reactivity, deep fear, separation panic
  • Decided case by case: bite history, resource guarding, aggression

If not yet

If a stay is not the right start, another program usually is

A no to board and train is rarely a no to training. A dog-selective dog may start with Adventure Academy, which builds structured socialization and matched introductions. A shy young dog may start with Brave & Balanced, from 4 months. A reactive dog usually starts with Focus & Flow, 6 weeks and 12 sessions, or React Less, Relax More, 8 weeks and 16. A household that wants daily training with nights at home can use Canine Campus, 2, 4 or 6 weeks with pick-up and drop-off.

Some dogs simply need the building to become familiar. A few half days of daycare at $33, or Dogtown Academy half days at $69, let a dog learn the place before a week of nights. Families in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea can add the Pup Van at $10 each way for those days. When the dog is ready, Gabby can revisit the stay. Our main board and train page describes Foundation and Advanced side by side.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is the evaluation the same as the training consult?
No. The consult, with Gabriella Pope, chooses the program, sets the goals and leads to the quote. The free evaluation, on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, is a temperament test plus a few supervised hours in a group, and it confirms your dog can stay with us and join a playgroup.
Does the training consult cost anything?
Ask when you send the training form. The evaluation is free; the consult is the short assessment that sets the program and the investment, and training sessions at Dogtown start from $94. The team replies to the form within one hour on business days and will explain what the first step involves.
My dog already goes to Dogtown daycare. Does it need another evaluation?
One evaluation covers daycare, Dogtown Academy, walks and overnight stays, so a current daycare dog has usually done it. The training consult still applies, because it chooses the program. If your dog has had a long break, a new diagnosis or a change in behavior, tell the front desk before you book.
Can a dog with a bite history be considered for board and train?
We decide case by case at the consult, not at booking, and we do not publish a yes or a no. Describe the history fully on the training form: who was bitten, how badly, what happened just before and how long ago. Many dogs with that history are better served by a program where the owner holds the leash.
How far ahead should I book the evaluation?
Several weeks before the stay if you can. It runs only on weekday mornings, so a Saturday start needs an earlier weekday, and some dogs benefit from a daycare day or two between the evaluation and the first night. Lead times vary with the season, so ask the front desk for your dates.
