Booking
Booking board and train: availability and lead time
Availability decides whether a stay happens at all, and it is the question we answer case by case. This page explains what limits a board and train calendar, what affects how far ahead you should plan, and what to do if the dates you want are taken.
What limits it
A board and train calendar is limited by trainer time, not by empty suites
An overnight stay needs a suite and, when the dog is ready, a playgroup. A board and train needs both of those plus several short training blocks a day with the training team, a daily update for you, and one or two go-home lessons at the end. Trainer hours are the scarce part, and they are why we do not publish a number of dogs in the program at once. Ask when you enquire how many dogs will be training alongside yours; it is a fair question for any program.
State law sets an outer limit as well. The MSPCA explains that under Ollie's Law, signed on September 20, 2024, a kennel's licensing authority and animal control officer set a safe maximum number of animals after the required inspection. MDAR's detailed regulations for commercial boarding and training kennels were due in 2026, and they had not been released as of the advisory committee's March 18, 2026 minutes; the mass.gov Ollie's Law page carries the current status.
- Trainer time for several short blocks every day
- An overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring for every night
- Room in a matched playgroup, once the dog is ready
- Your own availability for the go-home lesson or lessons
The sequence
Booking runs in a fixed order: the form, the assessment, the evaluation, then the dates
Daycare, Academy days, overnight stays and grooming can be booked online through MoeGo or in the Dogtown app. Board and train starts instead with the training form on our contact page, because it needs a plan and a quote first. The training team replies within one hour on business days, and a short assessment with Gabriella Pope decides between Foundation and Advanced, or points you to another program. The price is quoted after that assessment.
Because the stay includes nights in an overnight suite, the free evaluation comes next, on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current dog license. Dates are confirmed once the assessment and evaluation are done. It helps to settle the go-home lesson, or both coaching lessons for Advanced, at the same time, so the end of the stay is planned as carefully as the start.

Lead time
How far ahead to plan depends on the season, your paperwork and your own calendar
We do not publish a lead time, because it moves through the year. Summer, when seasonal residents arrive and many local families travel, and the holiday weeks of late November and December are common times to need cover for a trip, so ask earliest for those. Outside them, the usual constraints are the weekday-morning evaluation, the assessment and your own dates for the go-home lesson, which matter as much as ours.
Paperwork can add days you did not plan for. Check that Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella will be current for the whole stay, and renew a lapsed license first. In Gloucester, licenses come from the City Clerk and are due each April 30; at the time of writing the city's page lists $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact one, each plus a $2 processing fee, with a fee rise announced for 2026, so check the page. A puppy's vaccine series sets its own calendar, and the minimum age for a stay is confirmed at the consult.
- Summer and the holiday weeks: ask earliest
- Vaccines current through the last night of the stay
- A current dog license from your city or town
- Your own free dates for the go-home lesson
If dates are full
If your dates are taken, there are other ways to get the care now and the training later
Ask first whether nearby dates work, and whether we are keeping a list of families hoping for a cancellation; we confirm at the time whether a waitlist is running. If the trip is fixed and the training can wait, an ordinary overnight stay covers it, at $78 a night with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring. Unlimited Daycare Membership holders, at $700 a month, get priority for holiday overnight-stay reservations; ask whether anything similar applies to board and train.
Training without nights away is often easier to schedule. Canine Campus runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with pick-up and drop-off, and your dog sleeps at home every night. Dogtown Academy days, $89 full or $69 half, include a training session with our trainer, and private sessions start from $94. The Pup Van covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, which helps with any of them.
Before you commit
Before you commit to dates, get the terms and the handover plan in writing
Deposit, cancellation, extension, early pick-up and late pick-up terms are confirmed when you book rather than published here, so ask for them in writing and read them before the stay. Ask how the daily updates will reach you and in what form, and who to contact if your plans change mid-stay. The AKC's guide to board and train programs gives similar advice about methods and equipment: have the answers in writing before you hand over the leash.
Agree the pick-up plan at the same time. Weekday windows run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, Saturday windows 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM, and Sunday drop-off and pick-up for overnight stays 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. Choose a slot for the go-home lesson when you can stay without watching the clock, because that hour is where the training becomes yours.
