What does a dog walker do in a 30-minute visit?

Thirty minutes is the middle of Dogtown's three walk lengths: long enough for a real walk, short enough to fit around a working day. Here is what happens inside those minutes, what the $35 covers, and what lives in a different part of Dogtown.

A Jack Russell terrier on a blue leash sits on a grassy path at a person's feet.

The short version

Thirty minutes buys one dog, one walker, a real route and a report

The visit has one purpose: your dog gets a proper walk while you are out. A member of Dogtown staff, from the team that met your dog at the evaluation, comes to your door inside the agreed window and takes your dog out on its own. Half an hour covers a neighborhood loop with time to sniff, which is what most adult dogs need in the middle of a working day, and the route is matched to your dog's age, fitness and the day's weather.

The walk ends where it started. Your dog is settled back inside, water is topped up, wet or salty paws are dried, and the walker checks that the door is locked before leaving. Then the photo and the short note arrive: where you went, how your dog moved and anything unusual, from a refusal at the corner to a tick found after long grass. That report comes with every walk at no extra charge.

  • A solo walk with a member of Dogtown staff
  • A route matched to age, fitness and weather
  • Water topped up and paws dried on the way back in
  • Door checked, then a photo and a short note

The visit, in order

From the door to the note, the visit follows the same sequence every time

Consistency is the point of a regular walker, so the visit runs in the same order whether it is your dog's first week or its fiftieth. The way in is whatever you set up with the front desk, a key, a code, a lockbox or someone at home, and it is used for the walk and nothing else. How the arrival and settling minutes fit around the 30-minute walk is a fair question to ask when you book the schedule.

If there is a detail you want in the note every time, such as whether your dog went to the bathroom or how it handled a particular corner, tell the front desk when the schedule is set. The walker writes to that brief, and over a season the notes become a record of how your dog moves, eats and copes that is hard to get any other way.

Included, and not

What the $35 visit includes, and what lives elsewhere at Dogtown

The visit is a walk, not a bundle. Anything beyond the walk, the water and the report is either arranged with the front desk or belongs to another service. Feeding a meal or giving medication depends on what your dog needs and how often, so it is settled when you set up the schedule rather than assumed. Play with other dogs, a training session, a bath and a ride to the building each have their own home, listed in the table with their published prices.

Two dogs from one household are walked as two dogs, because every Dogtown walk is solo; ask the front desk how to book that when you set the schedule. And the walk does not replace the evaluation: every dog new to Dogtown completes the free evaluation first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city license.

Is 30 the right length?

Thirty minutes suits most adult dogs; puppies, seniors and athletes may need another length

Choose the length by the dog, not by the price gap. The 20-minute walk at $25 is the potty-break visit for puppies and the short, flat outing for seniors and dogs on restricted exercise. The 60-minute walk at $55 is for young working breeds and high-energy dogs who come home from half an hour still looking for more. Thirty minutes at $35 sits in the middle: a real walk for a healthy adult on a day it would otherwise spend waiting by the door.

If walks are part of the routine, the packs lower the cost. Ten 30-minute walks are $315, a tenth off the single price, and thirty are $892, which works out at under $30 a walk. Single walks are booked online or by phone once the evaluation is done, and packs are sold in the Dogtown app. Our midday dog walks page covers scheduling, and a daycare day may suit a dog that wants company more than a walk.

  • 20 minutes, $25: puppies, seniors and restricted exercise
  • 30 minutes, $35: most healthy adult dogs
  • 60 minutes, $55: young, high-energy and working breeds
  • Packs: $315 for ten 30-minute walks, $892 for thirty

On Cape Ann

On Cape Ann the walker is the keeper, and each town's rules come along

Gloucester's dog regulations require dogs to remain under the control of their owner or keeper at all times, and for 30 minutes the walker is the keeper. Rockport asks for a leash or direct voice control everywhere, a leash at all times downtown, and pick-up after your dog, with fines for leaving waste behind. Those rules travel with your dog on every walk, so a summer stroll through a busy downtown is a leashed one.

The season shapes the route as well. At the time of writing, Gloucester closes its beaches to dogs until September 30, starting April 1 at Good Harbor and May 1 at most others, so summer walks keep to streets and trails. From April to November a walk past long grass ends with a tick check, and in winter salted sidewalks mean the paws get dried properly at the door. Whether we can walk your street depends on your address and the season, so ask before you plan around it.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Does the 30 minutes include getting in and settling my dog?
Ask the front desk when you set up the schedule. The visit is published as a 30-minute walk, and the desk will explain how arrival and settling fit around it at your house. If your entry is slow, such as a lockbox, a gate and an alarm, mention it so the window you agree is realistic.
Will the walker feed my dog or give a pill?
Only if it is arranged. Feeding and medication depend on what your dog needs and how often, and they are settled with the front desk when you book rather than assumed. Write the instructions down clearly and leave the food or medication labeled in one place by the leash.
Can my two dogs share one 30-minute walk?
Every Dogtown walk is solo, so two dogs from one home are walked as two dogs, one after the other or on separate visits. Ask the front desk how to book that when you set the schedule; both dogs need to have completed the free evaluation first.
How do I book 30-minute walks?
Once the free evaluation is done, book single walks online or by calling the front desk at 978 491-5922, and buy 10-packs or 30-packs in the Dogtown app. Set the days, the window and the way in with the front desk first, and confirm that we cover your address for the season you have in mind.
