Seeing the building
Can I tour Dogtown before booking?
Seeing where your dog will play and sleep is a reasonable thing to want, and both the MSPCA and the AKC tell owners to do it before booking a stay. Here is how to ask for a visit at 210 Eastern Ave, why timing matters in a building run around drop-off windows, and what to look at once you are inside.
The short version
Ask for a visit and we confirm the arrangements, because there is no published tour schedule
We would rather tell you plainly than promise a tour slot this page cannot back up. Dogtown has not published a tour policy, so the way a visit works is settled when you ask. The contact page is written for exactly this request; it asks whether you just want to see the place and says we reply within one business day. Call 978 491-5922 before you come rather than arriving unannounced, and the front desk will tell you what can be seen and when.
Most owners see the building for the first time at the free evaluation, which is required before daycare, Dogtown Academy, overnight stays and at-home walks. It runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, and it starts in the lobby with the front desk and a certified trainer. If you want to see more than the lobby that morning, say so when you book the evaluation.
- No published tour schedule: ask, and the arrangements are confirmed then
- Contact page: we reply within one business day
- Call 978 491-5922 before visiting rather than arriving unannounced
- The free evaluation brings you into the building on a weekday morning
Timing
Visits work best outside the drop-off windows, when the lobby is not mid-handover
Dogtown runs on windows. On weekdays dogs arrive and leave between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, 12 and 1 PM, and 4 and 6:30 PM; on Saturdays between 8 and 10 AM, 12 and 1 PM, and 4 and 6 PM. Those are the hours when leashes, overnight bags and report cards cross the counter. A visitor who arrives then meets a busy front desk, and the people who could show you around are handing dogs back to their families.
So when you ask, suggest a weekday time in a gap, such as mid-morning or early afternoon, and let the front desk tell you what works. Sunday is not a visiting day in any practical sense: the building is closed for daycare and opens only for overnight-stay drop-off and pick-up, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. If you are coming from Rockport or Manchester-by-the-Sea, a gap also spares you the Route 128 rush.
What to look at
Look at where your dog will play, rest and sleep, and at how the groups are run
The MSPCA's advice for any boarding facility is to visit in person and ask to see all parts of it, including where your dog will be housed. At Dogtown that means the indoor play floors, the outdoor turf yard with its pools and platforms, the overnight suites, the grooming studio and, for cat owners, the separate cat room. Our facility page walks through each space, so you can arrive knowing what to ask to see.
VCA's checklist for choosing a daycare adds the things to watch rather than tick off: is the place clean and free of hazards, are large and small dogs kept in separate playgroups, are staff trained in pet safety and behavior. At Dogtown, playgroups are 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, so ask how the group your dog would join is chosen and who stays with it.
- Where your dog would play: indoor floors and the turf yard
- Where your dog would sleep, if you plan an overnight stay
- How playgroups are split by size and temperament
- Cleanliness, water, shade, and somewhere quiet for a tired dog
- Who stays with each group, and what training they have
How to ask
Send one note that says what you want to see, and bring your questions
A useful visit request names the service you are considering and the rooms you care about. Someone planning a holiday stay wants the suites; a cat owner wants the cat room; a puppy owner wants to see the play floors and the turf yard. Put that in the note, with two or three times that suit you, and the reply can be specific instead of general. Grooming customers can ask at the same time, since grooming needs no evaluation and can be booked straight away.
Bring a short list of questions, because the answers matter more than the decor. The MSPCA checklist is a good model: where your dog would go for medical care, what happens in a fire, flood or power cut, whether staff are on the premises around the clock, and who is responsible for seeking medical attention for your dog. Ask them at Dogtown and anywhere else you are considering, and compare the answers.
