Pug grooming

Pug grooming in Gloucester, MA

The AKC calls the pug's coat short, smooth and glossy, and in the same breath says it does shed. Owners find out how much. This page covers the shedding, the wrinkle over the nose, the eyes, the breathing on a warm day and the nails, with what each costs at 210 Eastern Ave.

The shedding

A pug's coat is short, but the AKC rates it four of five for shedding

The breed standard describes a fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy coat, neither hard nor woolly, in silver, apricot-fawn with a black mask, or black. The AKC says the coat needs minimal maintenance but does shed, and its shedding scale puts the pug at four of five, a notch above the shaggy Bearded Collie. Short hairs weave into upholstery and clothing, which is why a pug owner often wants a de-shed more than a wash.

Shed Release is the add-on for it: a $10 de-shedding treatment and brush-out on top of the $55 bath, aimed at loose hair a quick brush leaves behind. At home, the AKC suggests a weekly going-over with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt or a hound glove. The bath itself can be occasional; the AKC says a pug does not need one unless it gets into something messy or starts to smell doggy.

  • Coat: fine, short, glossy and shedding steadily
  • Shed Release: $10 on the bath for the loose hair
  • Weekly: a rubber mitt or hound glove
  • Bath: when the dog is dirty or smells

Wrinkle and eyes

The nose wrinkle and the eyes need more care than the coat does

The standard calls a pug's wrinkles large and deep, and the roll over the nose sits right beside the eyes. The 2022 UK study of skin fold dermatitis led by Dan O'Neill found pugs at about 16 times the odds of crossbred dogs, and in the three flattest-faced breeds it studied, the facial, nasal and eye-area folds were the most common sites. That fold needs washing gently and drying completely; a wrinkle left to air-dry stays damp at the bottom.

The eyes are the other reason to go slowly. The AKC calls them one of the breed's main attractions and one of its vulnerable spots, naming corneal ulcers and dry eye among the problems known in pugs. Tell us at booking if your pug has an eye condition or uses drops, and bring the vet's instructions. The AKC's drying guide adds that a dryer should stay away from the face and ears, which matters twice over on this face.

Breathing

On a warm day the breathing sets the length of a pug's visit

Like all flat-faced breeds, the AKC says, pugs sometimes have breathing problems and do poorly in sunny, hot or humid weather. A bath and a dry add warmth and excitement for a dog that already moves air poorly. The groomer keeps an eye on breathing and heat from start to finish and keeps the dryer air cool, and a coat this short dries quickly with a towel and gentle, cool air.

You can help before the appointment. In July and August, book an early slot or drop off in the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window on a daycare day, carry your pug across a hot parking lot rather than walking it, and tell us about any snoring, airway surgery or past heat episodes. The AVMA lists short-nosed breeds among the pets most at risk in heat. A pug in real breathing trouble needs a vet, not a groomer.

Price

$55 for the bath, $65 with Shed Release, and nails at $16

At 14 to 18 pounds on the AKC's figures, every adult pug sits in our up-to-25-pound band. The bath is $55, $65 with Shed Release, and nail clipping adds $16. Teeth brushing is $10. If your vet has a pug on a medicated wash for fold or skin trouble, ask whether the $8 antiseptic or fungal shampoo should go in. The groomer confirms the final total at check-in.

Skipping a professional bath does not mat a pug; it leaves the hair on the sofa and the nails on the long side. The standard calls for black nails, and a black nail hides the quick, so small, regular trims are easier on the dog than one big trim after months. Book the next visit at pick-up for $5 off, and note the discounts: 10 percent for Dogtown Classic overnight guests, 15 percent for Deluxe guests and unlimited daycare members.

At home

At home: a weekly rubber mitt, a daily wrinkle check and a dry tail curl

Most pug care is small and frequent. Brush weekly with a rubber mitt or hound glove outdoors, so the loose hair goes into the yard. Check the nose wrinkle every day: wipe it, then dry it with a soft cloth to the bottom of the fold. The tail, curled as tightly as possible over the hip in the standard's words, can hold damp underneath, so lift it and dry the skin after rain. Our how-to on cleaning skin folds has the full method.

Cape Ann summers are humid, and a pug does best on early, short, shady walks from June to September. The off-season beaches suit the breed better: at the time of writing Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30, and cool sand is easy on a flat face. Rinse sand from the wrinkle afterward. On daycare days, the Pup Van picks up in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Why does my short-haired pug shed so much?
Because the coat keeps turning over even though it is short, and the AKC rates the breed four of five for shedding. Short hairs also cling to fabric, so they are easy to see. A bath with Shed Release, $65 in all, removes a lot of loose hair in one visit, and a weekly rubber mitt at home catches most of the rest.
Is it safe to groom a pug in summer?
Yes, with care about heat. The AKC says pugs do poorly in sunny, hot or humid weather. Our groomer adjusts the handling for each pug, so mention any breathing trouble at check-in. Book an early slot in July and August if you can, and tell us at booking about breathing problems, surgery or past heat trouble.
Should the groomer clean my pug's wrinkle?
The bath washes the whole pug, wrinkle included, and the step that matters most is drying the fold fully afterward, so mention it at check-in along with any redness or a prescribed wash. Between visits, wipe and dry the nose roll daily. A fold that is red, smelly or weeping needs your vet; a bath will not fix it.
How much does a pug groom cost in Gloucester?
The bath is $55 for any pug up to 25 pounds. Shed Release adds $10, nail clipping $16 and teeth brushing $10 if you want it. Booking the next appointment at pick-up takes $5 off, and the final total is confirmed at check-in. Grooming needs no evaluation, so you can book online or in the Dogtown app today.
Does a pug ever need a full-service groom?
Almost never. The full service adds a haircut, and the breed standard describes a short, fine coat with nothing to shape. The $55 bath with Shed Release and nails covers the coat, the wrinkle and the feet. Put the difference toward regular nail trims instead, since a pug's black nails are easier to keep short with small, frequent trims.
