French Bulldog grooming
French Bulldog grooming in Gloucester, MA
The AKC describes a compact dog with a smooth coat, heavy wrinkles rolled above an extremely short nose and a weight under 28 pounds. The coat takes five minutes a day at most. The folds, the breathing and the nails are what a Frenchie's groom is really about, and this page takes them in that order.
Coat and folds
The coat is short and smooth; the folds and the tail pocket are where the care goes
The breed standard asks for a brilliant, short, smooth coat over soft, loose skin that forms wrinkles at the head and shoulders, with heavy wrinkles making a soft roll over the nose. The AKC says the coat sheds minimally and that weekly brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber mitt or a hound glove keeps it healthy. What the AKC stresses more is the folds, which it says should be kept clean and dry.
There is a reason for the emphasis. A 2022 UK study led by Dan O'Neill found French Bulldogs at about 26 times the odds of crossbred dogs of a skin fold dermatitis diagnosis, an inflammation of skin surfaces that press together, which the authors say rarely settles while friction and trapped moisture continue. Facial, nasal and tail folds were among the sites counted. The tail itself is short and either straight or screwed, and the skin around a screw tail can hold damp in a small pocket.
- Nose roll: wipe and dry daily
- Tail pocket: dry it after every bath and wet walk
- Coat: a weekly brush with a rubber mitt or hound glove
- Ears: a wipe around the opening, nothing deeper
Heat and drying
Breathing sets the pace: the groomer watches it and keeps the dryer air cool
The AKC says flat-faced breeds like the Frenchie are prone to breathing problems and do poorly in hot or humid weather. Warm water, a wet coat and excitement all add heat to a dog that cannot pant it away efficiently. So the groomer watches breathing and heat from the tub to the table and keeps the dryer air cool. If your Frenchie has ever struggled in the heat, snores loudly at rest or has had airway surgery, tell us when you book.
A short coat dries easily, which helps. The AKC's drying guide notes that a short-coated dog can be dried with a towel, that airflow rather than heat does the drying, and that a dryer should stay away from the face and ears. For a Frenchie, gentle and cool beats fast and hot. In July and August, book an early slot if you can, drop off in the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window on a daycare day, and skip the midday walk across the pavement on Eastern Ave.
- Tell us about noisy breathing, airway surgery or past heat trouble
- The groomer watches breathing and heat from tub to table
- Dryer air kept cool and away from the face
- Summer visits: an early drop-off is the cooler choice
The groom
Bath, folds and nails make the whole groom; a haircut has nothing to do on this coat
The bath is the booking: a warm wash, the dry and a brush-out, priced by weight. Add nail clipping at $16 on most visits; the standard calls for short, stubby nails, and the AKC says long ones can cause pain. Teeth brushing is $10. If your vet is treating the skin, ask whether the $8 antiseptic or fungal shampoo, the menu's medicated wash for itchy or irritated skin, should go in the bath, and bring the vet's instructions.
The full service adds a haircut, and a smooth Frenchie coat has nothing to cut, so it is seldom the right booking. The $10 face trim is on the menu for a tidy around the eyes, muzzle and ears; on a Frenchie it has little to do beyond the odd stray hair, so ask the groomer whether yours needs it. The face needs its folds washed and dried far more. Grooming never needs an evaluation, and rebooking at pick-up takes $5 off the next visit.
Price and timing
$55 for most Frenchies, $65 above 25 pounds, nails at $16
The AKC puts French Bulldogs under 28 pounds, and the breed standard disqualifies a show dog over that weight, so most Frenchies fall in our up-to-25-pound band at $55 for the bath. A solid dog of 26 pounds or more pays $65. Nail clipping is $16 and teeth brushing $10. Dogtown Classic overnight guests save 10 percent on grooming, and unlimited daycare members and Dogtown Deluxe guests save 15 percent.
For timing, a breeder quoted by the AKC suggests a bath about once a month for a Frenchie puppy and warns that over-shampooing strips the coat's natural oils. The nails need more frequent work; the same breeder describes weekly nail care to keep them short. Skipping a visit does not mat a Frenchie. It lets the nails lengthen and the folds stay damp, and neither shows until the dog is uncomfortable, so book the next bath before you leave.
| French Bulldog visit | Up to 25 lb | 26 lb and over |
|---|---|---|
| Bath: warm wash, cool dry, brush-out | $55 | $65 |
| Nail clipping | $16 | $16 |
| Teeth brushing | $10 | $10 |
| Antiseptic or fungal shampoo, if your vet suggests it | $8 | $8 |
| Face trim, rarely needed on a smooth coat | $10 | $10 |
At home
Between baths, wipe and dry the folds every day and keep the nails short
The breeder the AKC quotes suggests making care a morning habit: a few minutes of brushing, then an unscented wipe around the tail area, the facial wrinkles and the ears. Dry each fold after wiping, since moisture left in a fold is what the study above ties to trouble. Redness, a smell or discharge in a fold is a question for your vet, not for a bath. Our how-to on cleaning a dog's skin folds walks through the method.
Cape Ann's humid summers are the hard season for a Frenchie's folds and breathing alike. The AKC also warns that Frenchies cannot swim and should never be left unattended near a tub, pool or body of water, so the off-season beaches are for walking: at the time of writing Good Harbor takes dogs on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31. Rinse sand out of the folds afterward. On daycare days the Pup Van runs $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
