Pugs on Cape Ann: the breathing, the folds and the beach

Pugs are the comedians of the small-dog group and one of the breeds our handlers watch most closely between June and September. They also shed far more than their short coat suggests. This page covers the groom, the breathing, the beach months and how a pug's day at Dogtown runs.

The coat

A pug sheds like a much bigger dog, and the groom is built around that

The surprise for new pug owners is the fur. Fawn pugs carry a double coat, short but dense, and shed steadily all year with a heavier drop in spring and fall; black pugs tend to have a single coat and shed a little less. A pug's groom at Dogtown is the bath-only service at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds, and Shed Release at $10 is the add-on we recommend for almost every fawn pug, because it lifts the loose undercoat during the bath and dry instead of leaving it for your sofa.

General practice from our groomers is a bath every 4 to 6 weeks, and the fold every day at home. The deep wrinkle over a pug's nose traps moisture, food and, after a beach walk, sand and salt; wipe it dry each evening with a soft cloth and let your vet advise on anything medicated. On the table the fold is cleaned and dried, nails are clipped for $16, and teeth brushing at $10 matters more than usual because a short jaw crowds the teeth.

The breathing

Health notes our team watches for on a pug, starting with the breathing

A pug's face is flatter than a Frenchie's or a Boston's, and its breathing is the first thing our handlers listen for. A happy pug snorts. A pug in trouble pants fast with a wide mouth, stretches its neck out, and may have a tongue that goes from pink to dusky; that dog comes inside immediately, gets water and a cool floor, and its owner hears about it at pick-up. The AVMA's hot-weather guidance names flat-faced breeds as a higher-risk group, and we treat every pug accordingly.

The eyes are next. A pug's prominent eyes sit in the line of every paw, every bit of turf grit and every gust of sand, and a squinting or weeping eye gets rinsed and reported. Weight is the third watch point, because a pug gains easily and every extra pound makes the breathing harder in summer. None of this is a diagnosis; the AKC's breed guidance describes the screening breeders do, and your vet is the person to ask about airway, eyes and ideal weight.

  • Fast, open-mouthed panting with a stretched neck means inside, water, rest, and a note home
  • Squinting or weeping eyes get rinsed and reported the same day
  • Extra weight makes every summer harder; ask your vet what your pug should weigh

The beach

This coast: a pug's beach season runs October to April, and its summer runs indoors

Pugs love a beach, and Cape Ann lets them have one for seven months. Gloucester's beaches allow dogs from October 1 to April 30, with Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days and Good Harbor on even-numbered days until the plover closure on April 1; Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea takes licensed, vaccinated dogs from October 15 to April 14, two per person. That calendar suits a pug: cool sand, no heat, a short walk with a lot of sniffing. Rinse the nose fold and paws afterward.

Summer is the indoor season. Rockport's beaches close to dogs from June 1 to September 15 and Gloucester's from May 1, which removes the temptation, and from late June to early September our handlers move the small group onto the indoor play floors for the afternoon whenever the humidity climbs. Outdoor blocks are shorter and the pools are for standing in. At home, a pug's July walk is early, short and on grass; the pavement on Eastern Ave stays hot long after sunset.

  • Gloucester beaches October 1 to April 30; Wingaersheek odd days, Good Harbor even days until April 1
  • Rinse the nose fold and paws after every beach walk
  • Indoor floors and shorter outdoor blocks from late June to early September

Play style

Energy, play style and where a pug lands in the playgroup

A pug plays like a clown and rests like a cat. In the small-dog group of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, a pug will start a game of chase it cannot finish, wrestle a Boston terrier for two minutes, then sit on a handler's foot and supervise. The breed likes people slightly more than other dogs, and a dog that wants to be near the human is easy to keep an eye on in the heat.

Pugs are placed in the small group after the free evaluation, which runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM with a temperament test and a few supervised hours in the group. Half days at $33 suit older pugs and summer weeks; full days at $42 suit a young pug in the cool months. Enrichment is where the breed shines: a lick mat at $5 or a frozen Kong at $6 keeps a pug busy and still, which in August is exactly the point.

Dogtown for pugs

Dogtown for a pug: how to set up the year

A pug's Dogtown year has two halves. October to May is daycare at full stretch, the monthly bath with Shed Release, and beach weekends. June to September is half days or indoor-heavy full days, a lick mat instead of a chase, and a groom every 4 weeks because folds and skin need more attention in humid air. The small-dog daycare page covers how the small group runs day to day.

The Pup Van at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea spares a pug the hot walk to the car in July, and grooming can be booked onto any daycare day with no evaluation. Use FIRST15 for 15 percent off the first daycare visit, and tell the front desk what your vet says about weight and airway so the handlers can adjust the day.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Do pugs really shed that much?
Yes. Fawn pugs carry a short double coat and shed steadily all year, with heavier drops in spring and fall; black pugs usually shed a little less. A bath with the Shed Release treatment at Dogtown, $55 plus $10 for a pug, lifts the loose undercoat during the bath and dry. Between baths a rubber curry brush two or three times a week catches most of the rest.
How hot is too hot for a pug on Cape Ann?
Lower than most owners expect. A humid afternoon in the high 70s can be too much for a pug that is running, because a flat face cools poorly and humid air slows panting further. Walk before 9 AM or after 6 PM in July and August, keep to grass, and stop at the first sign of a wide mouth and a stretched neck.
Can my pug go to the beach in Gloucester?
From October 1 to April 30, yes. Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days and Good Harbor on even-numbered days until it closes to dogs on April 1 for piping plovers. Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea takes licensed, vaccinated dogs from October 15 to April 14. Rules change, so check the city and town pages before you go.
Which daycare group is a pug in?
The small-dog group, 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, alongside Bostons, Frenchies, Cavaliers and small doodles. Pugs are placed after the free evaluation on a weekday morning. In summer the group has shorter outdoor blocks and spends humid afternoons on the indoor play floors, and a half day at $33 is often the kinder choice for an older pug.
