Lhasa Apso grooming
Lhasa Apso grooming in Gloucester, MA
The Lhasa Apso's coat was built for Tibetan cold: double, heavy and hard, with a fall of hair over the eyes and feathered feet. In a pet home the AKC leaves one decision to you, long coat or puppy cut, and both need regular work. Here is what each costs, why this coat mats from the skin outward, and how to look after the eyes and beard.
The coat
A Lhasa's coat is heavy, hard and double, and it mats from the skin outward
The AKC breed standard asks for a coat that is double, heavy, straight, hard and dense, not woolly or silky, and of good length. Grown out, it hangs to the floor and parts down the middle of the back. The head carries a fall of hair over the eyes, whiskers and a beard, and the feet are heavily feathered. The AKC puts adults at 12 to 18 pounds and 10 to 11 inches at the shoulder, so a lot of hair sits on a small dog.
That combination is why a Lhasa mats close to the skin. The dense undercoat holds the hair it sheds, and the heavy outer coat lies flat over the top, so the surface can look neat while the base felts. The AKC adds a warning that matters on a damp coast: freshly bathed hair, long or clipped, must be dried thoroughly and brushed, because damp hair will mat even when it is clean.
- Outer coat: straight, hard and heavy, not silky
- Undercoat: dense, and holds shed hair against the skin
- Head: a fall over the eyes, whiskers and a beard
- Feet: heavily feathered, collecting sand and burrs
Puppy cut or full coat
Puppy cut or full coat is your call; both fit the full service, and only one fits a busy week
The AKC frames it as a choice for the owner: long hair or a puppy cut, and both require regular maintenance. Our full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut, so it covers either. A puppy cut takes the body to a short, even length, rounds the feet and shortens the face so the eyes are clear. A full coat stays long, and the groomer evens the hem, neatens the feet and keeps the sanitary area clean.
The AKC's routine for a long coat is a bath at least every two weeks with brushing at least once between baths, using the right tools and techniques. That is a real home commitment, and it is the reason to think hard about the puppy cut. Even then, the AKC says, a clipped Lhasa should be brushed regularly and bathed between groomer visits. Tell the groomer at check-in which you are choosing, and bring a photo of the length.
Eyes and beard
The headfall and beard stay clean only if they stay dry and out of the eyes
The fall of hair over a Lhasa's eyes is part of the breed's look, and on a pet it either gets tied up out of the way at home or cut short at the groom. The $10 face trim tidies the eyes, muzzle and ears between full grooms. The beard soaks up water and food at every meal, so wipe and dry it afterward; a beard left damp mats and smells. Bring a photo if you want the beard kept long.
Watch the eyes themselves, too. The AKC lists dry eye, cherry eye and progressive retinal atrophy among the conditions to ask a Lhasa's breeder about, and VCA includes the Lhasa Apso among the short-faced breeds whose breathing can suffer in heat and humidity. A groomer sees the face up close but does not diagnose. A red, cloudy or weepy eye is a call to your vet, and you can ask the groomer at pick-up whether anything looked different.
- Tie the headfall up, or keep it short with a $10 face trim
- Wipe and dry the beard after meals and long drinks
- Redness, cloudiness or a new discharge: your vet, not the groomer
- Hot, humid days: keep the dog cool before and after the visit
How often and price
A puppy cut is due again when the face covers the eyes; a skipped visit turns into dematting at $15 per 20 minutes
A Lhasa in a puppy cut is due for the full service again once the face is growing over the eyes and the coat is long enough to knot at its base; the groomer can suggest a date when you rebook. A long coat needs the studio more often, or a very committed owner. A Lhasa in the 12 to 18 pound range sits in our small band: $75 for the full service and $55 for a bath. The final price is confirmed at check-in once the groomer has looked through the coat.
When the base has felted, the work is dematting, $15 per 20 minutes on top of the full service, or a shorter clip under the mats if pulling them out would hurt. The groomer shows you the coat and talks through both before starting. A sanitary trim is $10, nails $16 and the face trim $10. Booking the next appointment at pick-up takes $5 off, and Dogtown's unlimited daycare members save 15 percent on grooming.

At home
Between grooms, brush in layers to the skin and never let a damp coat dry on its own
Brush in layers. Lift the top coat, brush the band of hair underneath from the skin outward, then drop the next layer and repeat, finishing with a metal comb that should glide to the skin. Start with the places that rub: behind the ears, the armpits, the chest and the feathered feet. If you bathe at home, rinse thoroughly, since the AKC warns that shampoo residue irritates the skin, and dry completely before brushing.
A wet coast tests that rule. Fog, rain and a walk on the leash at Halibut Point State Park, where the state requires leashes, leave a Lhasa damp to the skin, and so does an off-season run on Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea, open to dogs from October 15 to April 14 at the time of writing. Towel the coat, dry it with a hair dryer on a cool setting if your dog accepts it, and brush only once it is dry.
