Matted dog grooming in Gloucester: de-matting at $15 per 20 minutes, or the kind shave
Nobody plans to bring in a matted dog. It happens to doodles after a wet winter, to seniors who stopped tolerating the brush, to rescues in their first week home, and to any coated dog who swam at Good Harbor and dried in the car. Here is exactly how we handle it, what we charge and why we sometimes shave.
How it happens
Doodles, seniors, rescues and the wet Cape Ann winter
Mats form when loose hair tangles into hair that is still attached and the tangle tightens. Water speeds it: a doodle who swims at Wingaersheek on an odd-numbered day in March and dries in the back seat comes home with a coat that has started to felt behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits and along the inner thighs. Doodles, cockapoos, shih tzus, Havanese, long-coated Bernese and old English sheepdogs are the coats we see matted most.
The other common story is time. A senior dog who no longer likes being brushed. A rescue from Cape Ann Animal Aid whose coat was neglected before anyone loved it. A family who fell out of the six-week schedule over a busy summer of St. Peter's Fiesta and houseguests. None of it is a moral failing, and our groomers will not lecture you. They will tell you what the coat can take.

The assessment
Two options at check-in, and the price agreed before we start
At check-in a groomer runs a comb through the coat to the skin in the places mats hide. If the mats are loose, scattered and lift away from the skin, we de-mat by hand with a dematting comb and a slicker, charged at $15 per 20 minutes on top of the groom, and we give you an estimate of how many 20-minute blocks it will take. If the mats are tight, wide or felted to the skin, de-matting would mean pulling on live skin for an hour or more, and we recommend the shave.
A shave means a short, even clip over the body with a blade that slides under the mat, close enough to the skin to free the coat in one piece. It is not the look anyone wanted, but the pulling stops. The coat grows back, and the second groom, six to eight weeks later, is a normal full-service appointment at $75 to $120 by size. We never shave without telling you first, and we never de-mat a coat that should be shaved just because you asked.

$15 per 20 minutes for de-matting, no extra charge to shave
De-matting is $15 for each 20 minutes of hand work, added to the full-service price for your dog's size: $75 up to 25 pounds, $85 for 26 to 50 pounds, $110 for 51 to 90 pounds and $120 over 90 pounds. A doodle with mats behind both ears and under the collar might need one or two blocks; a coat matted over the hips and legs might need four or more, at which point shaving is both kinder and cheaper.
The $20 behavior or handling surcharge applies if the dog needs a second groomer or a much slower pace because the matting has made handling painful. We say so at check-in, not at pick-up. Book the follow-up appointment before you leave and take $5 off it. If your dog also comes to daycare, put the matted groom on a daycare day so the dog is rested and familiar with the building before it happens.

Groomers who tell you the truth about the coat and show you the skin
Cape Ann is doodle country, and our studio de-mats and shaves more doodles in March and April than in the rest of the year combined. Our groomers have the tools for both paths: dematting combs and slickers for the salvageable coat, and clipper blades that work safely under a pelt. They will show you the skin under the mats at pick-up so you can see the redness or the moisture that was trapped there, and they will tell you what to watch.
We also say what we do not do. We do not make medical judgments about the skin; if we find sores, a rash or anything that looks like it needs a vet, we tell you and leave the diagnosis to your veterinarian. We do not shave a healthy double coat for convenience; a Bernese with matted feathering has the feathering clipped and the body kept.

Getting here and staying ahead

Bring a matted dog in at the start of a window, ideally 6:30 to 9:30 AM on a weekday, so the groomer has the day. On a Saturday, choose from 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6 PM. The Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way; a harness is fine for the short ride.
Afterwards, the schedule is what prevents a repeat. A coated dog on Cape Ann should be dried to the skin after every beach day between October and April, brushed in lines to the skin twice a week, and on the table every six to eight weeks. Tick season, April to November, is another reason to comb to the skin: a mat is exactly where a tick from Ravenswood or Dogtown Common hides.
