Shih Tzu grooming

Shih Tzu grooming in Gloucester, MA

The AKC describes the Shih Tzu coat as luxurious, double, dense, long and flowing, and kept that way it needs brushing to the skin every day. Most pet owners choose a shorter trim instead. This page covers the face, the eyes, the honest cost of a full coat and the small trims that keep a Shih Tzu clean.

The coat

A Shih Tzu wears a long double coat that tangles at the skin unless it is brushed daily or kept short

The breed standard asks for a long, flowing double coat with only a slight wave. Two layers mean the soft undercoat tangles into the longer outer hair wherever the dog rubs, and on a dog this low to the ground that includes the belly, chest and legs as well as the ears and harness line. The AKC's advice for a long-coated Shih Tzu is daily brushing with a pin brush, layering the hair so you reach the skin, and a bath about every three or four weeks.

That is the full-coat reality: brushing every day, a bath every few weeks, and a coat that drags through every wet lawn and stretch of beach. The AKC suggests that owners who do not want to spend that time have a professional groomer clip the dog into a puppy trim. A puppy trim takes the body to a short, even length that brushes out in minutes, and it keeps the round, sweet look the breed is known for.

  • Full coat: daily brushing to the skin and a bath every three or four weeks
  • Puppy trim: a short, even body that brushes out in minutes
  • First mats: belly, armpits, ears and the harness line
  • Even the show standard allows trimming the feet and around the rear for neatness

Topknot or short face

Choose a topknot you tie at home or a short face the groomer cuts; both keep hair out of the eyes

The AKC gives the reason plainly: the hair on top of the head should be trimmed short or tied up into a topknot to protect the eyes from irritation. A topknot keeps the classic look and leaves you a daily job, combing the topknot and mustache and putting the band back in. A short face is a haircut decision instead: the hair above the eyes and over the nose is cut back and the head rounded, so nothing falls into the eyes between visits.

Tell the groomer at check-in which you want, and bring a photo. If you choose the topknot, ask for the head hair to be left long and the rest of the face tidied. If you choose the short face, the $10 face trim, which covers the eyes, muzzle and ears, keeps it clear between full grooms. Neither is a medical fix. A Shih Tzu that squints, paws at an eye or has a cloudy eye needs a vet, and the AKC lists eye conditions among the breed's screened health concerns.

  • Topknot: long head hair, combed and tied daily at home
  • Short face: hair cut back from the eyes, the easiest to keep clean
  • Face trim between grooms: $10
  • Squinting or a cloudy eye: the vet first

Stains, hygiene, timing

Tear stains, the $10 sanitary trim and a four-week cycle keep a Shih Tzu clean between haircuts

The AKC's tear-stain article names the Shih Tzu among flat-faced breeds whose shallow eye sockets let tears spill onto the face. Wiping the corners of the eyes with a damp cloth every day, as the AKC suggests, and keeping the hair there short does more than any shampoo. If staining appears suddenly or the discharge looks yellow or bloody, the AKC's advice is to call your vet. Whitening shampoo at $8 brightens light hair, but it does not change why the eye waters.

The sanitary trim, $10, shortens the hair around the rear, belly and inner thighs so it stays clean between haircuts, and the breed standard itself allows trimming around the anus for neatness. As for timing, a puppy trim usually holds for about four weeks before the face grows into the eyes and the belly starts to knot. Stretch past six and the groomer may find tangles that take de-matting at $15 per 20 minutes, agreed at check-in.

Price

A Shih Tzu sits in the small band: $75 for full service and $55 for a bath

The AKC puts the Shih Tzu at 9 to 16 pounds, well inside our up-to-25-pound band, so full service is $75 and bath only is $55. The bath-only visit, a warm bath, blow-dry and brush-out with no haircut, suits the weeks between trims or a long-coated dog whose owner does the brushing. Final prices are confirmed at check-in after the coat assessment, and add-ons appear only if you choose them.

The add-ons that earn their place on this breed are the sanitary trim and the face trim at $10 each, teeth brushing at $10 and nail clipping at $16. If your Shih Tzu also comes to daycare, put the groom on a daycare day so there is one drop-off. Overnight guests can be groomed before pick-up, with 10 percent off on the Dogtown Classic bundle and 15 percent off on Dogtown Deluxe.

At home

At home, a daily eye wipe and a few minutes with a comb keep the puppy trim easy

Two minutes each morning covers the face: a damp cloth at the corner of each eye, then a comb through the mustache and beard, which collect food and water. Three times a week, comb the belly, armpits and the hair behind the ears down to the skin. Our how-to on handling a mat before it spreads shows what to do with a small tangle before it becomes a groomer's job.

Cape Ann summers are the hard season for this breed. The AKC notes that the Shih Tzu's heavy coat and short face mean it does not tolerate heat well and is not a good swimmer, so walk early or late in July and August and keep beach outings to paddling. The beach months are cooler: Gloucester admits dogs to Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and a low-slung Shih Tzu needs the salt and sand rinsed off its belly afterward.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much does a Shih Tzu groom cost?
$75 for full service, the small-dog price for dogs up to 25 pounds, which includes the bath, blow-dry, brush-out and haircut. Bath only is $55. The sanitary trim and face trim are $10 each, and de-matting is $15 per 20 minutes if the coat needs it. Rebook at pick-up to take $5 off the next visit.
Can you keep my Shih Tzu's coat long?
Yes, the full service can follow your preference, but a long coat only works if you brush it to the skin every day at home, as the AKC advises. Without that, the undercoat tangles, and at check-in you and the groomer will be choosing between de-matting time and a shorter trim. If daily brushing is not realistic, a puppy trim is the kinder choice.
Will a groom remove tear stains?
It helps. Keeping the hair short at the corners of the eyes and adding whitening shampoo at $8 brightens light hair. The stains return as long as the eyes keep watering, though. The AKC links staining in flat-faced breeds to shallow eye sockets and advises a vet visit if heavy staining appears suddenly.
Does my Shih Tzu need a sanitary trim?
Most long-coated small dogs benefit, and the breed standard itself allows trimming around the anus for neatness. At $10 it keeps the rear, belly and inner thighs short so the coat stays clean between grooms. Ask at check-in whether the haircut you chose already takes those areas short.
Do Shih Tzus need an evaluation before grooming?
No. Grooming at Dogtown needs no evaluation, so a Shih Tzu can be booked online or in the Dogtown app straight away. The free evaluation is only for daycare, Dogtown Academy, overnight stays and walks, held on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 by appointment.
