September routine
Back to school with a dog
All summer the dog had children home, late mornings and somebody always around. Then one September morning the bus comes, the adults leave and the house goes silent until mid-afternoon. This guide covers what changes, the signs of separation distress, a two-week ramp before the first day and how daycare days fit.
What changes
September replaces a full house with an empty one, and the change lands in a single morning
Summer on Cape Ann tends to mean a busy household: children home, visitors, late dinners and a dog that is rarely alone for long. The first school day reverses all of it at once. The alarm goes earlier, the walk is rushed or skipped, everyone is out the door by eight and the dog spends most of the day by itself. The ASPCA names an abrupt change in schedule, in when or how long a dog is left alone, among the triggers for separation anxiety, and September is exactly that.
Children bring their own effects. School supplies come into the house at floor height, and the ASPCA's autumn list notes that glue sticks, pencils and markers are low in toxicity but can still cause stomach upset or a blockage if eaten. Lunch boxes with grapes or chocolate end up on the floor by the door, and both foods are on the ASPCA's poison list. A dog that played with the children all summer may also greet them after school with an intensity worth managing, which our kids and dogs guide covers.
- An abrupt change in time alone is a known trigger, per the ASPCA
- Backpacks and lunch boxes at nose height
- Glue sticks and markers: low toxicity, but a blockage risk
Separation signs
Separation distress shows up only when you are gone: barking, chewing, accidents, escape attempts
The ASPCA describes separation anxiety as a dog that urinates, defecates, barks, howls, chews, digs or tries to escape when its guardian is away, often with drooling and anxiety as the departure approaches, and the key is that the behavior happens only in your absence. A dog that chews the couch with you in the room is bored or teething; a dog that chews the door frame only after you leave is telling you something different.
Rule out medical causes first. The ASPCA points out that house soiling can come from a urinary tract infection, a sphincter weakened by age, diabetes or certain medications, so a dog that suddenly has accidents in September should see the vet before anyone calls it anxious. Do not scold or punish; the ASPCA warns that punishment can make an upset dog more upset and the problem worse. A phone camera pointed at the door for the first week shows you what actually happens.
- Barking, howling, chewing, digging, accidents or escape attempts while you are out
- Drooling or pacing as you get ready to leave
- Sudden accidents: a vet visit first
- No scolding; it makes an anxious dog worse
The first two weeks
The first two weeks, ending on the first school day: a gradual ramp from summer to September
The kindest version of September starts in August. Over the two weeks before school, move the dog's day toward its new shape a little at a time, so the first school morning is the fourteenth step rather than the first. For mild cases the ASPCA suggests a food puzzle toy at departures, which turns your leaving into the moment something good arrives, and for dogs that struggle, absences that start short and lengthen gradually.
Keep two things steady through the ramp: meal times and a real walk before the house empties. If the first week shows more than mild distress, such as nonstop barking, escape attempts or damage at doors and windows, the ASPCA says moderate and severe cases need the guidance of a trained and experienced professional, and some dogs need a vet's help as well. Our training team can assess that, and our answer on whether training can fix separation anxiety explains how.

Day 1, two weeks out: set the alarm and the morning walk to school-day times
- 02
Days 2 to 4: leave the house for short spells once or twice a day, handing over a stuffed food toy as you go

- 04
Days 7 to 9: book the free evaluation if daycare will be part of the school-year routine
- 05
Days 9 to 11: run one full mock school day with the house empty, or a first daycare half day at $33

Where Dogtown fits
One or two daycare days fit the longest school days; five days a week rarely does
Daycare breaks up the week without replacing home. One or two days a week, full at $42 or half at $33, cover the longest stretches alone, with drop-off from 6:30 to 9:30 AM to fit around the bus and pick-up until 6:30 PM. A full-day 10-pack is $380 and a half-day 10-pack $290, and the Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way on mornings nobody can drive. New dogs take the free evaluation first, and FIRST15 takes 15 percent off the first daycare visit.
What does not fit is daycare as the cure. A dog with true separation anxiety still has to learn to be alone on ordinary days, and five days a week can leave it no days to practice. For a dog that only needs a break in a long day, a 20-minute walk from home at $25 is a lighter touch, where we cover your address. Our dog daycare page covers how the playgroups work, and a $5 lick mat or a $6 frozen Kong added to the day helps a dog settle after play.
- One or two daycare days a week: $42 full, $33 half
- Drop-off 6:30 to 9:30 AM, around the bus
- Pup Van $10 each way in the four Cape Ann towns
- FIRST15: 15 percent off the first daycare visit
The rest of the year
The school year has more resets: vacation weeks, snow days and the summer after
September is the biggest change but not the last. Gloucester's February and April vacation weeks each fill the house for a week and empty it again on the Monday after, and a shorter version of the ramp helps: the alarm back at its school time the weekend before, one normal morning walk, and a short absence with a food toy. Families travelling over a vacation week can book an overnight stay at $78 a night, with the evaluation done on a school-week morning beforehand.
Snow days work the other way, putting everyone home without warning, and most dogs enjoy them. If a nor'easter changes our hours or drop-off windows, the news comes through the Dogtown app and the front desk at 978 491-5922. Then June arrives, the house fills again, and next September the same ramp starts over, a little easier for a dog that has done it once.
