Your dog's first summer on Cape Ann: beach bans, heat and the pool
A dog that arrived last fall has never seen the Fourth of July, a beach lot at 10 AM in August or a tick the size of a poppy seed. This is the summer, month by month, as we explain it to first-year owners at the front desk.

The beach ban is the shock. Gloucester's public beaches close to dogs on May 1 at the time of writing, Rockport's on June 1, and Essex shuts its beaches and Centennial Grove to dogs for June, July and August. A dog that spent the winter running Wingaersheek at low tide loses the one soft, cool surface on the peninsula just as the days get long.
What arrives instead is heat on dark surfaces, ticks in the shaded woods that become the alternative walk, and noise. The AVMA warns that asphalt burns pads and that dogs cool only by panting, so humidity hits them harder than it hits you. Tick season here runs April to November. And the last week of June brings St. Peter's Fiesta, followed by the Gloucester fireworks on July 3, which the whole harbor hears.

The plan

In May, do two things: book the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM if the dog is new to us, and ask your vet about tick prevention. In June, set the summer routine: a walk before 8 AM on grass or under the trees at Ravenswood or Dogtown Common, a tick check at the car, and a daycare day or two a week, at $42 full or $33 half, for the turf and the splash pools.
In July, drop off in the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window before the heat builds; on the worst days play blocks shorten and move indoors. A pupsicle at $6 is the July add-on. Book July 3 well ahead, as a daycare day or an overnight suite at $78 if you will be out. In September the sand returns: Rockport after the 15th, Gloucester on October 1.

Cape Ann specifics

With the beaches closed, the summer walks are Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester, Dogtown Common and the Greenbelt trails, shaded and all tick country. Halibut Point requires a leash and its granite rim is an oven by noon. The fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort heats in full sun, so use it early. Bearskin Neck and Main Street in July are hot pavement and crowds; the hand test decides whether the dog walks on them.
Fireworks matter more here because the harbor is a bowl and the sound carries to East Gloucester and up Eastern Ave. The AVMA's plan is simple: the dog indoors in a closed room with a fan or television running, a current ID tag, the microchip details checked, and a conversation with your vet before the season if the fear is severe. Our overnight suites are not silent on July 3; what they offer is company, a routine and people awake and watching.

What not to do

Do not take the dog to Good Harbor in June; the ban runs from May 1. Do not walk at noon on Main Street or the Boulevard, and put the back of your hand on the pavement first at any hour. Do not leave the dog in a parked car; the AVMA is clear that cracked windows change nothing. Do not take the dog to the fireworks, however calm it seems at home.
Do not go a week without checking for ticks if the dog walks the trails; the nymphs of June and July are the size of a poppy seed and the hardest to see. And do not treat a dog that is panting hard, drooling and unsteady as tired; that is heat stress, and the AVMA's advice is a cool place, water and a vet at once.
