Anxiety, honestly

Can training fix separation anxiety?

If your dog howls from the moment the door shuts, chews the frame and greets you as if you were gone a year, this is not a manners problem. It is fear. Fear can be changed, but not quickly, and not in a dog still being left alone to practise panicking.

The short version

Separation anxiety is a panic problem, so the plan is a safety plan before it is a training plan

A dog with separation anxiety is not misbehaving when you leave; it is frightened, and the chewing, howling and soiling are what fear looks like with nobody home. You cannot train a dog out of panic by telling it to stop, and you cannot reward calm that never happens. The work is to build absences so short that the dog stays calm, reward that, and lengthen by seconds.

That last part is the hard one for working households, and it is where Dogtown's other services come in. Daycare, Academy days or an at-home walk can cover the hours you must be out while the plan is still at the two-minute stage. Gabby is honest: most separation plans are measured in months, and years of panic are not settled by a six-week block.

  • Vocalizing, pacing or drooling for most of the absence
  • Damage concentrated at doors and windows
  • House soiling only when alone
  • Refusing food or a stuffed Kong until you return

Is it anxiety at all

Half the dogs described as anxious turn out to be bored, under-exercised or adolescent

Before anyone builds a months-long plan, check that the diagnosis is right, and the cheapest tool is a camera. A bored dog eats the couch at hour three; an anxious dog is at the door at minute one. A bored dog finishes the Kong; an anxious dog leaves it. Record two or three absences before the consultation; Gabby would rather watch ten minutes of footage than hear a description.

Age and history matter too. Adolescents between eight months and two years often have energy, not fear, and a Dogtown Academy day can end the destruction on its own. A senior that starts panicking after years of being fine may be in pain or losing hearing, and that is a vet appointment first. New rescues, including many from Cape Ann Animal Aid, often show a temporary version.

How it works at Dogtown

A behavior consultation first, then a graded plan you run at home with Gabby coaching

Every plan at Dogtown starts with a short assessment with Gabriella Pope to pick the right program and level. For separation anxiety that assessment is the behavior consultation: history, your footage, the vet's notes, and a decision about whether this is anxiety, under-stimulation or something medical. Training starts from $94 a session and the plan is confirmed after that meeting.

The plan itself is mostly private work, because the behavior happens in your home and the sessions coach you through graded departures. Where under-stimulation is part of the picture, Calm & Connected or Academy days join in. Where the fear is general rather than specific to being alone, a Level 3 program may come first. When training alone will not get there, Gabby will say so and suggest your vet.

What it means for your dog

Daycare, Academy days and the Pup Van are management, and management is half the plan

Management means the dog is not left alone longer than it can currently handle, which for most Cape Ann households means covering the workday. A daycare day at Dogtown is $42, a half day $33. A Dogtown Academy day, $89 full or $69 half, adds a training session and trainer-led settle time. The Pup Van brings dogs in and home for $10 each way across Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Some anxious dogs are worse in a busy building and better at home with company, and for those an at-home walk by Dogtown staff, 20, 30 or 60 minutes at $25, $35 or $55, breaks the absence in the middle. Puppies and adolescents usually do best with the daycare route because tiredness helps. Seniors and fearful dogs often do better with the walk.

  • Cover the workday so panic is never rehearsed: daycare, Academy or a midday walk
  • Puppies and adolescents: daycare tires them, which helps
  • Seniors and fearful dogs: a walk at home is often kinder than a busy building

The Cape Ann part

Fiesta week, the July 3 fireworks and a nor'easter all test an anxious dog

Noise and disruption make separation worse, and Gloucester has a calendar of both. St. Peter's Fiesta in late June fills the Fort with crowds and music; the city's fireworks are July 3; the Schooner Festival takes the harbor on Labor Day weekend. An anxious dog should not be left alone during any of them, and the AVMA's fireworks advice, a quiet interior room and familiar sounds, applies double here.

Winter has its own version. A nor'easter that closes schools also closes your dog's routine, and a dog that copes with a two-hour absence can lose ground after a week of nobody leaving the house. If the anxiety appeared suddenly in an older dog, or your dog has injured itself trying to get out, call your vet; Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn runs 24 hours.

The plan, and the services that cover the gap

Training changes the fear; daycare, Academy days and at-home walks keep the dog from rehearsing it while the plan takes hold.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How long does it take to fix separation anxiety?
Months, usually, and honest trainers do not promise a date. Progress is measured in seconds of calm absence added at a time, and it moves unevenly: a good fortnight, then a setback after a thunderstorm. Dogs that have panicked for years take longer than a new rescue with a temporary version.
Should I crate my dog to stop the damage?
Ask before you do. Some dogs settle in a crate; a truly panicked dog can injure itself trying to get out of one, and confinement can make the fear worse. If there is drool, bent bars or broken nails, stop and bring the footage to the consultation.
Do I need to see a vet as well as a trainer?
Often, yes. A sudden start in an adult dog, self-injury, or anxiety that does not move after weeks of a good plan are all reasons to talk with your vet. Gabby will tell you when she thinks the training needs that support, and she will not pretend training alone fixes every case.
Can a new rescue with separation anxiety come to Dogtown?
Yes. Give the dog two or three weeks to settle at home first, since many rescues show a temporary version that fades with routine. If it does not fade, send the contact form with the adoption date and what you see on camera. Gabby has fostered through Cape Ann Animal Aid and knows the difference.
