Giant Schnauzer grooming
Giant Schnauzer grooming in Gloucester, MA
The AKC calls the Giant a larger, more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer, and the coat scales up with the dog: the same harsh beard and eyebrows on a frame that can reach 95 pounds. This page covers what that working coat needs, how the clipped outline is cut, and what a missed appointment costs on a dog this size.
The coat
The Giant's coat is dense, wiry and weather resistant, with a soft undercoat packed beneath
The AKC describes a dense, wiry, weather-resistant double coat: a soft undercoat under a harsh outer coat. The breed standard adds that, seen against the grain, the outer coat stands slightly up off the back, lying neither smooth nor flat, with coarse hair on top of the head and a harsh beard and eyebrows it calls the Schnauzer hallmark. The coat comes in solid black or pepper and salt, and the AKC rates the breed two of five for shedding.
Low shedding is the catch. Dead undercoat stays in the coat until someone brushes or cuts it out, so on a Giant it packs into the densest places: the beard, the chest, the legs and the underline. On a pepper and salt dog the standard calls for lighter eyebrows, whiskers, cheeks, throat, chest and legs, which show every stain. On a solid black dog the same coat simply hides how much has built up, until the comb stops.
- Outer coat: harsh and wiry, standing slightly off the back
- Undercoat: soft and dense, slow to shed out
- Beard and eyebrows: harsh, and wet after every drink
- Legs and underline: where packed coat starts to knot
Clip or strip
The full service clips the Giant outline; stripping is not on the menu, so ask before you book
The AKC says a Giant must be clipped or stripped regularly to keep the coat healthy and attractive. Our full service takes the clipped route: a bath and blow-dry, then a haircut in the breed outline, with the back and sides short, the leg hair and underline left longer, the beard shaped square and the eyebrows trimmed so they frame the eyes rather than cover them. The breed standard is plain that vision should not be impaired, nor the eyes hidden by eyebrows grown too long.
Stripping pulls the dead outer hair by hand so new harsh coat replaces it, and the AKC's guide to wire coats calls the job time-consuming and tedious. It is not listed on our grooming menu, so this page does not offer it. Families who show their Giant, or who want the harder stripped jacket, should phone the front desk at 978 491-5922 first and ask what the studio can do. For a family Giant, the clipped outline is the practical choice, and the groomer can work from a photo you bring.
- Clipped outline: the full service, $110 or $120
- Eyebrows: shaped clear of the eyes
- Beard: squared and shortened to your taste
- Hand-stripping: not on the menu; phone first
Timing
Book the next cut while the outline still shows; a lost cycle on a dog this big turns into long mat work
The AKC asks for a weekly brushing at home plus regular clipping or stripping, without naming a fixed interval. The practical signal is the outline itself: once the eyebrows reach the eyes, the beard hangs ragged and the leg hair starts to cling together, the next full service is due. Booking it at pick-up sets the date before the weeks get away from you, and takes $5 off the visit.
A skipped cycle costs more on a Giant than on a smaller schnauzer, simply because there is so much more dog. Packed undercoat in the legs, the chest and the underline is worked out at $15 per 20 minutes, and an hour of it adds $45 to the $110 full service. When the knots sit tight to the skin, taking those areas shorter can be kinder than combing them out, and the final price is set at check-in after the groomer has gone over the coat.
Price
$110 for most Giants, and $120 for a male over 90 pounds
Full service is priced by weight. The AKC gives females 55 to 80 pounds and males 75 to 95, so every adult female and most males land in our 51-to-90-pound band at $110, and a big male over 90 pounds moves to $120. A bath alone, for a between-cuts wash after the beach or the mud, is $75 or $85 on the same scale. The groomer confirms the band at check-in.
A large, strong dog that is new to the table, or one that needs a slower pace, may carry the $20 behavior or handling surcharge for extra time and hands; ask at check-in whether it applies. Nail clipping is $16, and the standard's thick-padded, catlike feet carry a lot of weight, so keep the nails short. Unlimited daycare members and Dogtown Deluxe overnight guests take 15 percent off every groom, and Dogtown Classic guests 10 percent.

At home
Between cuts, brush the body every week and comb the beard and legs right down to the skin
A slicker brush over the body and a metal comb through the leg hair, underline and beard cover most of a Giant's week. The AKC also asks for regular ear checks for signs of infection and frequent tooth brushing with a toothpaste made for dogs; teeth brushing at $10 can ride on any studio visit too. The beard is the daily job: squeeze it out after the water bowl and towel it, because a soaked beard on a dog this tall drips through the house and knots by evening.
The Giant is built for work, and the AKC lists running, hiking and swimming among its outlets. On Cape Ann that means wet legs. Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, and the salt and sand ride home in the leg hair; rinse and dry it the same day. From April to November, Ravenswood Park and Dogtown Common put ticks into that same dense coat, so the weekly comb doubles as a tick check.
