Schnauzer grooming

Schnauzer grooming in Gloucester, MA

The name covers three dogs, from an 11-pound miniature to a giant that can pass 90 pounds, and all three wear the same wiry double coat, the same beard and the same eyebrows. This page explains how that coat behaves in Gloucester, what our full service does with it, where stripping fits, and what each size costs.

The coat

A wiry topcoat over a soft undercoat: the body stays neat, the beard and legs do not

The AKC describes all three schnauzers the same way: a harsh, wiry outer coat over a soft undercoat. The body coat sheds very little, which is the reason many families choose the breed, and also the catch. Hair that another dog would drop on the rug stays put until someone combs it out or cuts it off. The AKC puts the miniature at 11 to 20 pounds, the standard at 30 to 50 and the giant at 55 to 95, so one pattern is cut on three very different frames.

The furnishings are where the work is: the longer, softer hair left on the legs, under the chest, on the muzzle and over the eyes. The beard soaks up the water bowl and whatever the dog nosed on the walk. The leg hair and the skirt catch wet sand and marsh mud, then knot where the legs rub together. A schnauzer's body rarely mats; the beard, the armpits and the inside of the back legs often do.

  • Body coat: harsh, close and slow to tangle
  • Beard and mustache: wet after every drink, so it knots and discolors
  • Leg furnishings and skirt: hold sand, burrs and mud where the legs rub
  • Eyebrows: grow forward over the eyes unless they are shaped

Clip or strip

Our full service cuts the schnauzer pattern; hand-stripping is not on the published menu

The full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut, and on a schnauzer that means the familiar outline: the back and sides taken short, the skirt and leg furnishings left longer, a squared beard, and the eyebrows shaped into two arches that lift off the eyes. The AKC notes that most owners of pet miniature schnauzers choose a clippered trim from a professional groomer over stripping, and a haircut in the breed pattern is what our full service is. Bring a photo if you like the skirt short or the beard kept small.

Hand-stripping is a different job. Instead of cutting the outer coat, the groomer pulls the dead wiry hairs out so new harsh coat grows in, and the AKC's guide to wire coats calls it time-consuming work. The AKC's standard schnauzer page explains why show owners bother: a clippered wire coat turns softer, loses some of its resistance to dirt, brambles and water, and lightens a little with each clipping. Stripping is not listed on our grooming menu, so we do not promise it here. If you want a stripped coat, call 978 491-5922 before you book and ask what the studio can do.

  • Clipped pet trim: quicker on the table and simple to keep between visits
  • Clipped coat over the years: softer and a little lighter
  • Hand-stripped coat: a harder jacket, but not on our menu
  • Showing your dog: ask the front desk before you book

How often

Every five to eight weeks keeps the outline; a skipped cycle turns the legs into de-matting time

The AKC's guidance for a pet miniature is a clippered trim every five to eight weeks and a bath about once a month, depending on where the dog spends its days. Inside that window the groom is a reshape: the outline is still there, the eyebrows still lift and the beard just needs shortening. Past it, the eyebrows fall into the eyes, the skirt drags through every puddle on Eastern Ave and the leg furnishings start to felt where they rub.

That is when the bill changes. Dematting is $15 per 20 minutes on top of the full-service price, so a standard schnauzer whose legs and armpits need 40 minutes of work pays $85 plus $30. Where the furnishings have matted to the skin, a shorter leg is often kinder than an hour of combing, and the groomer talks that through with you at check-in, where the final price is confirmed after a coat assessment. Between full grooms, the $10 face trim tidies the eyes, muzzle and ears so the expression lasts.

Price

$75 for a miniature, $85 for a standard and $110 for most giants

Full service is priced by weight, not by breed, so the three schnauzers land in three bands. A miniature, 11 to 20 pounds on the AKC's figures, is $75. A standard, 30 to 50 pounds, is $85. A giant of 55 to 90 pounds is $110, and a big male over 90 pounds moves to the extra-large band at $120. A bath alone for a between-cuts wash is $55, $65, $75 or $85 on the same scale. Weigh your dog before booking; the groomer confirms the band at check-in.

The add-ons a schnauzer uses most are the $10 face trim between cuts, the $10 sanitary trim, nail clipping at $16 and whitening at $8, a brightening shampoo for white and light coats that can be added for a pale beard. If your dog needs a slower pace on the table, the behavior or handling surcharge is $20. Book the next appointment at pick-up and $5 comes off it, and unlimited daycare members take 15 percent off every groom.

At home

Between grooms, comb the furnishings to the skin and dry the beard after meals

Most of a schnauzer's upkeep happens with a metal comb. The AKC's standard schnauzer page lists washing the beard and leg furnishings, clearing debris from between the foot pads and trimming nails as weekly jobs, and the miniature page adds an ear check every week. Comb the beard, the skirt and each leg from the skin outward, and if the comb stops, work the knot loose before it grows. Our how-to on handling a mat before it spreads shows the safe way to split one.

Cape Ann adds its own debris. At the time of writing, Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30 and Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and a schnauzer's skirt comes home from either full of wet sand. Rinse the legs in fresh water the same day and dry them. From April to November, tick season, the furnishings are also where a tick hides after Dogtown Common or Ravenswood, so make the weekly comb a tick check too.

  • Comb the beard, skirt and legs to the skin once a week
  • Wipe and dry the beard after meals and long drinks
  • Rinse sand and salt out of the leg furnishings the day you get home
  • Check the armpits and inner thighs for knots and ticks, April to November

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Do you hand-strip schnauzers?
Hand-stripping is not on our published grooming menu, so we do not promise it. Our full service is a bath plus a haircut in the schnauzer pattern, which the AKC says is the route most pet owners take. If your dog is shown, or you want to keep the hard wiry jacket, call the front desk before you book and ask what the studio can do.
Will a clipped trim change my schnauzer's coat?
Over time, yes. The AKC's standard schnauzer page explains that clippering a wire coat makes it softer, lightens the color a little with each clipping and costs it some resistance to dirt and water. For a family dog that is usually a fair trade for a coat that is quick to maintain. The body will still shed very little.
How much does a miniature schnauzer groom cost in Gloucester?
At Dogtown a miniature up to 25 pounds is $75 for the full service, which includes the bath, blow-dry, brush-out and the haircut. A bath alone is $55. Common extras are a $10 face trim between cuts and nail clipping at $16. The final price is confirmed at check-in, and rebooking at pick-up takes $5 off the next visit.
Can my schnauzer's beard be whitened?
Whitening is an $8 add-on: a brightening shampoo for white and light coats, which can be used on a pale beard that has picked up color from food and water. How much it lifts depends on the stain. Wiping and drying the beard after meals at home is what keeps it pale between visits.
Can my schnauzer be groomed on a daycare day?
Yes, once your dog has done the free daycare evaluation, a weekday appointment between 6:30 and 9:30 AM with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license. After that, add the groom when you book a $42 full day. Grooming alone never needs an evaluation, so a schnauzer can start with a stand-alone cut.
